Strength:

Great, deep bass. Small footprint. Great with music.

Weakness:

None

I purchased two of these SPL1200's for my 25'x18' living room since the price was so cheap($719.00 each) and was amazed at the sound they produced. After spending some time on placement I found that putting them on either side of my KLF-30's was the sweet spot. Music is absolutely amazing, tight deep base, not 'boomy' and can keep up with the KLF-30's(driven by a DA777ES) with headroom to spare. I am very pleased with these subs and the size helps with the WAF (wife acceptance factor).

Strength:

Impressive woofer build, extremly accurate sounds better than most 15" subs

Weakness:

Could make a better looking cabnet

This sub is absolutly incredible, it produces bass in the subsonic regions with ease, no strain at all, I would rate this sub above most 15" subs as far as its ability to reach high spl's at very low htz. It does just about everything right from movies to music it does not dissapoint, the only complaint I have is that the cabnet could be a little better looking, but hey were talking about performance here and the SPL1200 delivers in that category, Its to bad the other people below got bad ones otherwise they would probably agree with me that this is one of the best subwoofers out their that money can buy especialy for the $670.00 I paid, anyway have any questions about this product, feel free to e-mail me and I will answer the best I can.

Strength:

Cleaner and more powerful sound than many 15" - 18" subs. Shakes the house or plays the subtle tones when called upon.

Weakness:

It is not an HGS

Great sub that can be had for a great price with some searching. I know that some better subs are available even in this price range. Yet, none can produce this sound with such a small footprint.

Outline summary:
-Great power
-Good sound depth
-Superlative speed and articulation
-Reasonable price
-Standard build
-Good support from Velodyne
-Plays a great varity of material with little difficulty

-Not as loud as bigger subs
-Might want to save up your money for a bigger sub (assuming you don't mind size difficulties).
-Not the best choice for people who need tons of "impact" to shatter their ear-drums

In all, a fantastic sub for it's market niche.

Strength:

small size

Weakness:

design problems

This is an update to my 8/29 review:

Velodyne sent me a replacement amp to get rid of my loud humming noise. The new amp worked great for three weeks. After three weeks the sub started producing a constant low humming noise. The noise was very low, but loud enough for me to give up on Velodyne products. I returned the unit to Hillcrest Hi-Fi without any hassel.
I am aware that Velodyne has been producing great products, but this particular model seems to be ladened with design problems.
Good luck. By the way, I now own a Paradigm Servo 15 and have been very happy with its performance.

Strength:

Tight musical sound. Good power and fills my 21 x 35 foot rooom pretty well. Moving it a few feet from the wall eliminates boom and it can play very loud. Can reproduce very deep frequencies with authority. Allows one to make out EVERY bass note even at lower volumes.

Weakness:

volume potentiometer went bad in 2 days. Velodyne sent a replacement pot for free but I had to pay a local repairman $15 to put it in. Didn't trust myself to NOT burn the circuit board. Not quite as clean as the FSX 12 but much more power. Auto-on switch label printed backwards. Took a while to figure that one out.... a bit tricky to find the best cross over frequency.

Nice musical sub if you can get it for well under retail. It has the power and projection to fill a large room well. Tight clean sound that doesn't boom unless that's what you want. I notice a fair number of reviewers having minor or not so minor technical problems with their Velodynes. A few glitches seem fairly probable.

Strength:

power, size, hits very low hertz, presice sound

Weakness:

no lfe input, touchy poistioning

i could not belive that such a small sub could produce such mass amounts of bass. On test cd's it played down to 20 hertz in my room of 18'x 24'. it is very accurate and has a very fast response. You must use both L and R inputs, tried with only L and only had half the bass. I'm using monster cable Z-BASS with Y adabter. Watching The Matrix, the helicopter scene, the spl-1000 didn't miss a beat and the blades of the copter you could feel pulse threw me. placement is tricky, to close to the wall and the bass gets muffled, to far and the bass can't be felt. I found in corner about 1.25" away is best for my acoustics. Music is great, finally a sub that performs in HT and music!! The design of this sub is outstanding. With 750 watts RMS and a 346 oz magnet, this sub is serious, for people that want serious tight bass but don't want HGS size. You will be blown away, and please take it home and try it in your HT don't judge it at the place you here it! Now to keep the stupid cats away from it.

Strength:

Big sound from a small box. (The small box makes the wife happy :)

Weakness:

Placement critical

First off, don't be fooled by the price I paid. DO NOT EVER BUY ANYTHING FROM ALL HOME THEATER (A PART OF UNCLE STEREO). The price is good, but the service is lousy. I had to actually get my credit card company involved in getting my money back. When I only wanted a replacement sub to begin with.

A little upsetting is the fact that after 3 days the subwoofer's auto on/off stopped working. It would still turn on, but never turn off (except when you cut off power). So, I'm still a little leary of the build quality of this unit. As far as sound quality, I was very pleased. I would recommend it for both movies and music. It blended in very well with my Klipsch RF-3's when I set the sub x-over to 60Hz. It is very placement critical though, I could notice a big difference only moving it 4" ! I could feel the T-Rex in JP as well as the depth charges in U571. I'm only giving 4 stars because of the aforementioned auto on/off problem. To me, a sub for this price should not have problems after only 3 days.
All in all, a very clean, tight, deep and powerful sub. Excellent balance for both music and movies. I would highly recommend it in the $900-$1000 price range. Just DON'T buy it from All Home Theater, or Uncle Stereo....

Strength:

tight, powerfull bass, Good house shaker but musical

Weakness:

price

This is my first sub. I got a good deal on a dealer goof up. I am running this sub with a Rotel RSP-985 preamp with a 2-channel and 3-channel rotel 200w power amp. My speaker consist of B&W 805's, HTM2, and DS6's.

This sub blends really nice with my B&W's. For movies, it attacks and ends precisely. I was very impressed with this sub. It has ample power to shake my house, especially when the T-Rex takes over the screen in JP. It has good control of the bass from low levels to high. I have not notice much distortion with this unit.

I believe this to be a fairly musical sub. It blends in nicely on Eagle HFO DTS dvd. It also sounds great with regular cd's. Here it does not overpower your senses with bass, unless your listening to heavy bass music.

Overall I think this to be a great sounding unit for both movies and music. I do think it is a bit pricey. You pay for the Velodyne name. Is it worth it? Let your ears and pocketbook decide.

Strength:

Lot of sound for a small unit!

Weakness:

Placement is very critiacl!

I can't say to much about Sound City outstanding! I have dealt with them over the past serval years. Peter at Sound City has been very helpful and outstanding to deal with!

This is my first time to deal with Velodyne! Yes I had problems with my new $1200.00 subwoofer. After about two months old, it started to have very bad video noise problems on the Big 50" TV. So bad on channels 2,3,&4 you could not watch TV or video tape on the VCR's. I spent the next two days try to troubleshoot the problem. After I moved the Sub 15' away from the video Equ. I E-Mailed them and told them what the problem was. Two days later I get a call form Velodyne, saying yes they have had video noise problems with the Amp. in the unit. Said they would send me a NEW Amp. that I could use to replace the old one with.
So they did I took the old Amp. out an insatalled the NEW one! Oh yes it still had the same video problem! I'm back on the phone again with Velodyne. After two more days they will send me a new SUB. They did, still to early to tell!!

Great for it size!

Weakness:

Amp problem in early batches, with design problems!

After Velodyne replaced the bad unit. I have not had a problem. The sub sounds great with my setup. Yes this a lot of sub for the size. The low's for video are very good, a good DVD to test with is the Money Train. The subway crash should make the sub sound great! I have a very large room and it works very well. I have a pair of Jamo 7.7 for the mains and a Jamo 7.2 center and the surrounds are Cambridge Newton S300 Mutipole. Yamaha A/V, Yamaha DVD and Luxman CD Player, with a Mitsubishi 50" big screen.
