Strength:

SOLID, FULL, TIGHT, QUICK, ACCURATE BASS!!! Adds no harmonics or coloration to the bass.

Weakness:

NONE

When I first heard this sub at my dealer, I was blown away by its solid accurate reproduction of bass. There was no boominess, mudiness or distortion. I thought that I might have problems with my room at home (13x15) but I had absolutely no problems. The first place I put it is where I left it. It integrated extremely well into my room and I didn't have to move it at all. I've auditioned a lot of subs, especially the highly rated M&K's and this baby blows them away. I am very pick when it comes to bass. I hate the boominess and harmonics that most subs add to music and HT. This sub gave me what I wanted: a true reproduction of low frequencies. If you like a lot of loud raunchy bass, then this sub is not for you cause you will find a lot of missing bass when compared to other subs. This is because most subs in the market produce up to 25% distortion with added harmonics which makes them sound louder and full of more bass. But they are adding stuff to the bass which was not there to begin with - this is what troubles me! The HGS-12 adds no more than 1% distortion to the bass. If you want solid, tight, quick and accurate bass, then look no further. It shakes the whole house with HT special effects, and integrates very well when listening to music cds. Best sub I've ever heard. It's a bit expensive, but you definitely get what you pay for. And the wife loves the fact that it takes up so little space beside the couch.

Strength:

Fast powerful bass with clean sound.

Weakness:

Price

This sub is alot different then the Klipsch sub I had. My ref. sub could easily dominate the sound. This sub blends with the sound much better. The Velodyne sub is silent untill the bass kicks in then it packs a killer punch. I was standing in front of it yesterday and I turned the volume control all the way up for the DTS entro on my Eagles " When **** Freezes over" DVD. The sub moved the hair on my head and legs. For a moment I thought a large spider was in my hair. Wow, I was impreesed!
Velodyne recommended the HGS-15 for my system and room but I did not want that large of a sub so I got the HGS-12. My mains are Klipsch and are rated at 102 db per watt rears 98 db/watt, center 99 db/watt powered by a Denon 3300. The Velodyne sub easily keeps up. I am a home theater guy so I wanted to play some movies before posting my thoughts on the sub but once it moved the hair on my body I knew I was ready to give my opinion. AWESOME!!!

Strength:

Manufacturing Problems?

Weakness:

D.O.A.

I purchased the HGS12 last year, and had several faults with the unit. The servo "wire" had rubbed on the inside and shorted out the unit. Velodyne replaced the sub, but the second unit arrived D.O.A! I have a REAL problem with a product that has these types of major problems...after all this is just 1 speaker cone and an amp! If the 3rd unit fails, im looking for another company. I dont think I would recommend this poorly constructed sub, even though it sounds great when it does work.

Strength:

Powerful, Loud, Clean, good build quality and construction finish. Servo controlled. Good for building demolition!

Weakness:

optional remote, no power switch

Out of the box, if you play Pink Floyd - Brain Damage(from dark side of the moon) you will be glad you paid the high $2000 admission price of this unit, with some tweaking on the crossover and some positioning work, this sub is a real top performer! Very clean and controlled, super-fast yet discustinly powerful for a sealed, forward firing unit. This unit is well built and has a very nice finish to it. Unobtrusive back with no heatsink hits to a well designed amplifier(3000 watt class D!) The unit is fast enough to keep up with my Martin Logan Aerius i electrostats which are horribly quick and need a good quick sub to boot. Although the price is a bit high, you will be very glad you paid the extra money for it, even though it may seem very overpriced, its not really, considering the technology and quality of this product. The only major downsides are the optional remote should be standard on ANY sub over $1000 dollars, come on people, and a power switch on the back would be nice instead of having to unplug it every time I want to listen to music at night without having drywall crumble down on me. Overall a great product that albiet a mild manufacturing issue early on that rendered a few units DOA, should last for a long, long time. A highly recommended unit!
