Strength:

Minimal harmonic distortion that causes excessive ersatz bass and boominess in other subwoofers around a similar and sometimes higher price points.

Nice flat response in the lowest 2 audible octaves.

More than adequate SPLs generated in the average sized room.

Thoughtful and comprehensive variety of control/tweaking features and input options.

Very effective and staggered Low Pass filter.

Weakness:

The manual. Omits expalanations of some features such as the "Current Sensing Servo" and "Audio/Video" switch.

This review actually corresponds to the CHT-15 which is the new model of the CT-150 with slightly better specs (300W rms amp etc.).

At this time I would just take a minute to explain the higher than usual price: The duties on electronic equipment in my island are indeed high. Furthermore the consumer has to absorb a VAT rate of 15%.

Be that as it may, after much Internet research, I proceeded to purchase this product last month and am thoroughly pleased with the unit's performance and hence my decision.

I was not looking for a boom-box but rather a tight accurate sub that would deliver a clean 'thump!' as opposed to a bloated 'boom!'. I actually listen to music much more than I watch movies.

In my current configuration, i am using a Denon AVR3802 receiver in stereo mode with a pair of Definitive Technology BP10B towers as fronts and a Marantz CC3000 CD player on the coax digital input.

On the Denon the L/R fronts are set to "small" with a crossover frequency of 80 Hz. The CHT-15 is connected to the sub/LFE output of the Denon via a Y-cable. The subwoofer is set in the front left corner of my 12' X 16' room with a gain setting at 8 O'clock and a LP cutoff frequency of 40 Hz. The phase is set to 0 degrees. Of course, in this set-up the HP setting on the sub is irrelevant.

What can I say? I am immensely impressed! I actually listen to a wide variety of music: From Charles Mingus and Stan Getz to Jay-Z and Sade. From Iron-Maiden and Metallica to Charlotte Church, Dianna Krall and Ella Fitzgerald. From Bob Marley to Machel Montano: They all sound great on this subwoofer.

I have heard a couple of people mention sluggishness and boominess as regards to this sub. I am convicted that the reason for such adverse comments are rooted in their neglect to optimally place and tweak the controls of the sub. Chances are that the low-pass cutoff as well as the gain are way too high and/or the phase is incorrectly adjusted.

I have never heard a more accurate sub for under US$1000. The SPLs generated below 30 Hz are enough to shake my concrete floor quite nicely not to mention my couch and me whilst not generating pseudo bass (harmonic distortion) in the 3rd (80-160 Hz) octave. Unfortunately, many ill-advised consumers mistake this annoying boom for true sonic depth not realizing that the frequencies of sounds they hear are actually integral multiples of the frequencies of the fundamental notes!

I strongly suggest consideration of this product for audio enthusiasts and even audiophiles seeking a good moderately priced unit for use in mid to larger sized listening/viewing rooms.

I would advise Velodyne Acoustics to review the manual and make it more complete. They should be selling many more of these! Hats off to them for yet another fantastic product in the world of subwoofing.

Strength:

BASS, BASS, and more BASS. pretty good construction. seems pretty well put together. good nobbs on the back as well as speeaker termainals. all around great sub.

Weakness:

very, very heavy. 83lbs. the size. but not really a weekness. none that i have come across as of yet.

This is one of the best subs i've erver had. i go through subs fast. i like toi feel the ground shake during a movie. this is the only sub that has made me jump durning a explosion or an earthquake. This sub is un-real. when ever i listened to this sub at the store it was in a sound proofed room and sounded pretty good. i gt this monster home and it just expolded with bass. the whole room just shook from the bass. and it was not muddy or distorted at all. to put it simple. if you have the money and the space to put this monster. i would get it.

Strength:

As many previous posts have stated, clean, articulate, tight bass. Best in the business I truly think.

Weakness:

big darn box, real damn heavy, but if you go "elec-servo" you'll pay the $$$ penalty in minus size!! It is a sweet trade off either way depending on your room.

OK I bought it used, but in very good condition. The person I purchased from had 2 of these woofers (of all things imagined). He down sized to an apartment, upstairs, and only needed 1. I got lucky and got the other.
As usual I did my homework here and was quite impressed. Even the "audiophiles" were kind of this unit, rightfully so I would add. To be one of the "bottom shelf" 15 inch units, it speaks extremely well as to what Velodyne offers as their larger cabinet entry level technology subwoofers. They are very advanced beyond that I assure you.....for the $$$$ differances.
If you are fortunate enough to find an audiophile type show room, you simply must go and listen to the comparisons this and any of their(subwfr) products can offer.
I am not a "poster boy" for Velodyne, but could be if asked! At once you/I can tell the differance between lower "octave doubling", as in many subwoofers and the well defined bass content with this product. This unit could certainly be one of the better, modern day, audio products helping bridge the audio enthusiast into the audiophile.
"Alas, let there be a forum for such Nero"
Good fortune with you sonic choice(s).
I am looking forwars to doing a "sub off octave +" connect to my AR 50 mains. Let you know later.

Price, Velodyne Reputation, Quality Fit and Finish, BASS!!!!

Weakness:

NONE

I have been trying to get a sub that would shake the house but also not bust your checking account, the results have been fairly disappointing until now. The CT-150 puts out all the bass that someone could need for music or movies in a room thats 14 x 18 and could probably go well over that. I have tried smaller 12's and they sound good but you only hear them, and also tried the Acoustic Research 15" and that was a good sub for the money but didnt have the ummmmph (or clarity)of the Velodyne. I have played both music and movies on it and they both sound excellent, but the rap was a little boomy and that holds true on any sub, home or car. I played the new U2 concert DVD on it and it really is awesome, I went outside to see if it would be too much for the neighbors and even the metal siding was rattling (no joke, and only turned up to 3 or 4). The placement is always a factor and I tried several locations and in the corner pointed outward is always a safe bet. I highly recommend this sub and at the price I bought it at, unbelievable!

Strength:

Solid, tight bass. Great extension. Controls look like they belong on a much more expensive sub.

Weakness:

Cabinet is kind of plain. This sub deserves brass isolation cones instead of the rubber stick on feet.

I had trouble getting this massive sub home. I had to take it out of the box and jam it into the back seat. I ordered it because it was only 3" wider and taller than the CT-120 but those extra inches make a difference. My advice is to borrow a friends truck. The finish on this sub is black vinyl. It is very low on the WAF. (Wife acceptance factor.) The sound is incredible though. Solid tight bass. I have it set at 1.5 out of 10 and this thing shakes walls like crazy. On Fight Club, when the buildings come down, I really thoght that my house was going to come down. The train wreck in Unbreakable is also a scary experiance now. It is also very subtle with music in the films. There isn't any annoying one note bass or boominess in music or big explosions. I have B&W speakers. When I upgraded my sub though, the B&W ASW1000 is $700 and not of this caliber. I was looking at the ASW2000 which is more of a match for the velodyne but costs over $1000. I'm very happy with this sub. A CT-120 will probably be good enough but I went for the CT-150 because it has the current sensing servo that keeps the distortion at a minimum. If something is worth doing right, it's worth overdoing.

Strong Bass output, Heavy Duty drivers

Well, what can I say about this monster. It delivers all the bass your gonna need for small to medium rooms, hell in the right set up, even in large rooms. I don't think mine is broken in yet. But its output as of now is pretty sweet. it has all the low end rumble to satisfy my needs. I am currently using it in my basement room with hard concrete floor, which i heard detracts some of the bass (Aggreveites Standing Waves), but it doesn't seem to fade this bohemeth. I use it pretty much equally for music listening and for my home theatre. Some previous reviews on this site say that this perticuler sub is slow with the music....what the hell is wrong with you guys?...is all I have to say to them. People with that kind of gripe are A) Not properly setting the Level/phase/cross over right or b) Are Dumbasses. This baby rocks my house when i properly set it up. With the level set about 2-3, and phase around the 90 degrees and the x-over at 120 hz (I use this sub to complament my Mission Monitors 701'a) so thats why the freq is set so high, but it comes through in all its glory. What all my review means is.........go get this sub!!....I got mine for $799.99 ........CANADIAN!....great deal..awesome sub....jus do it!

Strength:

Tight, powerful, low bass for a single 15" woofer. Completely variable phase adjustment, high AND low pass filter.

Weakness:

Big, dull finish

I first when the cheap route with an AS SW-15, which promply blew up after 2 weeks. Took it back to buy.com, and they said they weren't getting any for months. Started shopping around locally for something maybe a little smaller but higher quality, for around $500. After reading reviews here I was ready to buy the CT120 at circuit city for $529, until I came across this site world-exchange.com. They basically are a 'referral' service that sells 'mint condition' AV equipment for cheap. $550 for the CT150, only a few bucks more than the 12" a CC! (I really wanted that extra booom for movies) It took be about 3 weeks to get it, but it did come (from a un-named authorized dealer who WE automates the transaction) and it was brand new (receipt said floor model, but all original packing seemed never removed from the unit.

This sub is so powerful I have it turned to about 2 out of 10 and it shakes my whole house. Even with that it was too powerful, I had to turn my subwoofer out down to -10db. Much tigher response and lows than my on SW-15. It's definately worth the extra bucks for the quality. I tried the T-Rex scene on jurassic park, and it was instantly rattling my windows. Also just watched 'Way of the gun' and you can feel shotgun blasts! It was able to keep up with fast shooting scenes with machine guns where the SW-15 could not.

Somebody please explain the music/video switch to me, the manual doesn't mention exactly what it does.

The Phase and mk units were nice, but they cost more than this sub, and yes the MK is more 'musical', but it also didn't have anywhere near the raw power of the CT150. This unit isn't light, it's about 85 pounds, compared to other 15"s are around 65. Shipping was very reasonable, about $50(about as much as tax even if I could find it locally for that price, but it was $700 at CC)

Next I just need a sound meter to fully calibrate the phase settings with the AVIA disc.

There is no possible way I can fully explain to you how GOOD this subwoofer is. My best advice is to go out and try it for yourself. It plays movies with austonishing authority and clarity, giving you that deep, gut wrenching bass that DD and DTS crave. Just go out and listen to one, you won't be dissapointed. Hell, just BUY it. You'll be glad you did.
