Sounded great the first 3 months, a little hum. Then it hit me! No remote, no IR it died! Took it to repair shop, got the hum fixed, they put a part in backwards. I still want to use it but lost the number to the company. If there is anyone that has it e-mail me please!!

Well gentlemen, I must be very lucky, I not only bought the
st-1010 but also the st-1212 . The 1010 has no remote control so I would rate it a little lower. I have no hiss problem, no hum problem that some have discribed here. This 12" powered sub-woofer is incredible. I have had it connected to various AVreceivers, Sony, Awia, and now it's connected to a Pioneer VSX-509S and it shakes the neighbors house with its booming power. I have never had the need for service, so I probably will be upset when I find that there is none, but I can live with this fact, since I kind of bought this as a throw away.(because of the low price tag).
If one comes available again , unused, I'd bye it in a heart beat! So should you, you will not be disappointed.
Remember, Sub-woofers must be tweaked to the room and equipment its' attached to, for best results.

Good value for the money. My unit had little transformer noise (bothersome in quite midnight if you don't turn it off), so called the manufacture for fixing, they were friendly and did sent me a brand new one very fast, but still the same problem. So I figured out that I have no time and money to ship it around even they are willing to do it, short after, I find a simple way to make it work much better.
Buy one Radio Shack speaker damping/filling, which cost under $5, remove the bottom passive driver, put the damping in by rolling and then expanding, now put the passive driver back on.

This fixed two things: First, the noise level is smaller; Second and the most important one -- fixed the frequency response. It used to have a more than 12dB peak around 50Hz and almost no output at 25Hz, now it can reach 25Hz with descent level and peak is controlled with in about 6dB. For $5, worth to try! Tell your friend, and tell me your finding.

I received my sw-1212 (won at an auction for $106). I feel its a pretty good "bang for the buck". However, I do hear the transformer humming and (as reported by David) and I feel it is annoying. I am gonna try the speaker damping today and post my experience. I do want to mention that my sub came with a remote but the amp is rated at 150W (rms instead of the 250 stated everywhere. Overall, I am comfortable in giving it a 4.0 !!

This is a follow up of my experiment with the radioshack insulation -- Well I must say, that I was very disappointed upon seeing the insides of this subwoofer. Basically, the quality of the components is very poor. The transformer noise level did go down by about 10-15% but still existing. Again this is a result of cheap components (transformer). The complete subwoofer is made in china. Also the way the speaker has been put together is very disappointing -- the quality of the plywood and the screws drilled into this frame etc. etc. -- I would advise not to open up the guts of this unit unless you want to feel sad! -- I did notice a marginal improvement in the quality of the bass though (with the addition of the insulation) -- Still I think its not a bad deal at around $120 (including shipping and insulation)- However, I'd bring down my earlier rating from 4 to 2 stars.

I guess I'm just the lucky one out of everyone here, because I don't hear any "humming" noises at all.. at low volumes, no volume or during quiet interpauses in a movie/music. The only noise I hear is when I'm adjusting the volume and frequency with the remote at which it kinda clicks, but aside from that, it's perfect when I'm watching a movie and everything is rumbling around me!I give it a perfect 5 for it's price and sound quality..
btw I also bought the ST1010 10" 150 watt subwoofer because I loved the SW1212 so much.

Well I must say I just received this most economical Subwoofer today. Even though I have less than three hours usage on this box, I have to agree with David who stated that for the price you cannot beat it. Price Paid was 141.00 shipped!!!! Not bad for a grand 250 Watt Front firing 12" Woofer with another 12" bottom Passive woofer...... This spectacular box will give you subtle bass or it will shake your house down, whichever you choose. I do however hear the hissing that David also spoke of but have decided to unplug the sub whenever not in use so I will not notice it. This hiss does not happen during moves or CD’s. I would recommend this sub to anyone no matter their HT equipment.
So if you want to spend 1/4 the price and get 4 times the bass look at the Ultimate Sub SW-1212.

Just received my Ultimate SW-1010 powered Sub, i got it from 1 of the On-line Auctions for $108 + Ship and it sure helped my system. If u crank it up it will shake the windows & doors. It's seems to be well made, it about 50lbs. and the sound is good..Like they always say "So Far So Good" It dose not have a remote, but it has auto On/Off... So if u r on a budget giv'em a look...!!
I'll give the SW-1010 4 Stars and 5 if it had a remote...!!
