Strength:

Incredible Bass...Surprisingly sensitive...Try it with a record...The turntable rumble will walk it across the floor!!!

Weakness:

Too much repairing!!! Can it not keep up to my 65 wpc Sansui and Angstrom Reflexions?

I purchased my unit in July 2000. Due to some importing problems I received the unit in November and after 1 month, a rattle was noticed within the sub...After another 2 months I fnally took it in to be repaired....After waiting another 5 months, the main driver was finally replaced along with the radiator side as the new drivers look different from the old ones...Bevelled edges from surround to dustcap are newer...Surround direct with cap is older...I received the unit back and again within a month it has started rattling...I'm not impressed with rattling...Isn't that supposed to be my house? I will say that when this sub works...It blows you away!!!

Strength:

Incredible base output/size ratio. Easy to hide. Low distortion and low frequency extension.

Weakness:

Difficulty in keeping them from vibrating across the floor. Have to adjust separately for music and HT.
And last but not least, Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I am using the Sunfire with a pair of Digital Phase AP4s, which are capable of a good amount of base output to just below 30Hz. I wanted to free up the drivers, to reproduce the midrange with more clarity, and extend the low end of the system with the sub. Through a great deal of trial and error I settled on a crossover of 60Hz using an AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator's crossover section. Dealing with the other issues was not as easy. After moving the sub around trying short feet, long feet and even gluing the thing to the floor with RTV the beast wanted to make some sounds of it's own. After many of these episodes I tried one more. I used three of the longer rubber feet. Two on each back corner and one centered on the opposite side. This was by far the best solution to the problem I can say I'm satisfied with the results. It appears that unless your floor is perfectly flat, using four feet will cause some rocking problems.
The hum was another interesting problem. Caused by the different ground potential at the sub compared to the main system ground, I tried using high quality isolation transformers from the preamp to my main amps (bridged Adcom 555s). this worked great for isolation but I didn't care for the transformers in the circuit. I was using two lengths of 20 foot Monster Cable interconnects out of the crossover to feed the sub from across the room. I finally tried using a single high quality Canare blue coax cable that has characteristic impedance of 75 ohms. This did not completely eliminate the hum but reduced it to levels that I can live with. I think I am happier with the sub now that I had to do get more interactive with the setup process. I give it a five star rating.

Strength:

amazing sound from such a small box

Weakness:

it is not the most beautiful sub

I have only had this sub for a few days, it already is amazing on home theater and seems reasonably tight on music.

Strength:

AMAZING SPLs,DEEPER THAN DEEP BASS,SMALL SIZE

Weakness:

NO IEC SOCKET FOR UPGRADING POWER CORD

This is my follow-up review and the SUNFIRE continues to AMAZE!!!!!I have now upgraded to 4xTHIEL 1.5s and 1xTHIEL SCS3 for my center channel. The SUNFIRE blends in admirably at 60Hz croosover mark (labelled NORMAL on the SUNFIRE).
The ground hum problem can be overcome by using a PS AUDIO POWER PLANT or alternatively by using a different outlet. In my case one outlet in my living room causes the hum to be loud while the other two eliminate the hum entirely.I believe it is the ground of my electrical wiring which is dirty and causing the hum.
If you are looking for a HT/STEREO subwoofer IN THE $1200 range there is no other in terms of quality and size and in generating "out of this world" SPLs between 18-50Hz like the SUNFIRE.

Strength:

small, great for home theater

Weakness:

set-up and placement

I listened to both the Sunfire and Velodyne at the show rooms and liked both of them. I had a hard time deciding so I took both of them home for auditioning. The Velodyne did better for accuracy and music. The Sunfire blew the Velodyne away when it came to RMS power and Home Theater. The Sunfire is amazing for low end bass that you can feel. I have a 16X20 HT room, you can hear and feel clean bass everywhere in the room. I could have bought the HGS10 for the same price, but went with Sunfire for overall performance that fit my liking. If you go choose Sunfire True Sub., I find the corner to be the best location for optimal performance as recommend by Bob Carver the pro himself.

Strength:

compact, powerful

Weakness:

does not have an IEC socket for power cord upgrade

I recant! I recant! I recant!

. . .and I apologize for the rash review previously submitted.

The Sunfire True Subwoofer Mk.II, ONCE PLACED APPROPRIATELY, is fantastic!! I ended up putting the Mk.II on Black Diamond Racing Cones, and on a stand, midway between my speakers and about a foot or so behind them. Corner placement did not work in my room--too boomy.

Yes, I'm a "believer" now: I now deify Bob Carver like some of the rest of you.

But, Mr. Bob, the Mk.II needs an IEC socket!!!

Strength:

It produces 104db@20hz with average distortion. It is not "slow" nor does it "produce bloom" or not "keep up with" your
damn precious WATT Mongrel 6's! It's a damned subwoofer and
it's an amazingly good product.

Weakness:

None

Look, guys (I'd say everyone, but there are no other women at this site, are there?) this is an awesome sub--there's nothing like it. It goes to 18hz, flat @104db, is correctly damped and is extrememly small. It's unbelievably cool and even the subs that go lower and have higher SPL's (which we all know only look good on paper) are not as cool. This thing is the best sub around. The velodyne's are the obvious choice if you've got tons of room, but this is the one if you don't. That's all there is to say.

Strength:

How low can ya go? How low can ya go?

Weakness:

Placement

Enough on how great the sub is, I want to address everyone's problem with the ground loop hum. Yes it's annoying, but it's so damn easy to fix! 10 bucks at Radio shack (groud loop isolator) problem solved. I've moved this thing all around a couple of apartments and found along a wall works better than a corner. I've almost been evicted twice! Anyway, I love this sub and am excited to pick up my new DefTech BP30 to replace my BP8's that will be moved to rear channel duty.

Strength:

Very small yet loud and crisp.

Weakness:

The 1st MKII I received blew a woofer in less than 30 minutes. The second has a hum problem the first didn't. I have tried numerous things to get rid of it. (i.e. ground loop breaker circuits, 2 prong power adapter, seperate circuit, ...). The hum has lessoned but still remains. Sunfire support (what a joke) told me to return the sub and get yet another. Is 3rd time a charm or is it 3 strikes your out?

I like the size of this sub. I had a paradigm 2200 coffee table sub that was boomy in my room (yet lacked the annoying hum). The MKII is very crisp. I am sure that it has a lot to do with the new location I have the MKII in. Due to its size you can place it almost anywhere. The sub hums with no input cable attached. You plug it in and it hums. I have nothing else plugged into the circuit and it hums. I plug the remaining components in and it hums a little more (not much). Frustrating! I would give this sub a 5 if it only hummed when the music told it to. It seems a lot of reviewers have the same issue. I seriously doubt it is because we are all doing something wrong in the setup. Plus why didn't the 1st sunfire and the paradigm hum. Sunfire needs to do something about this. The first step is admitting you have a problem...

While I am talking about sunfire I should mention I also have the sunfire cinema grand amp and theater grand processor. I like everything about these components except that the auto on feature of the cinema grand amp does not work if you use the balanced inputs.
