I just have it from yesterday, I haven't even been able
to test it yet, but I'll give little reviews so I can describe the evolution throughout the time of running in, untill the unit settles. It was 10 days late, but it had to make quite a trip, so I can live with that.
the packaging was excellent, very solid so no harm will be done by transporting the unit. manual is a little home-made, but it adds to the feeling that it's built especially built for you.it includes a 10 meter high-level interconnecct, and a mains cable, plus four spikes, the nylon screws are already in. the manual itself is very personal and really explains what will happen, how the unit will change over the first week, what is normal and what is not, and an elobarate explanation of setting up.
the unit itself is heavy, the surface feels a little rough but it has no sharp edges.
I'll give a new review as soon as I'm able to test it and set it up. I do this because this site has been a real help in the choosing of all my recently acquired gear, so I'm showing my gratitude. More news on monday,
cheers,
koen

Strength:

Excellent HIFI & Dolby Digital Subwoofer / Easily connected

Weakness:

LS-level and Line-level connection regulated over one set of controls, no standby-setting

RelQ50 is used to complement a pair of chario syntar 100 tower main speakers, syntar center, syntar 100 surrounds connected with an NAD T770(5.1 receiver)/T550(DVDplayer) combination in a square room about 18M2, ceiling 3M high. In this setup it performs astonishingly well, even with DVDs like Godzilla. MusicCDs like Incognito, Erykah Badu, Steely Dan and KRAFTWERK sound seriously better with RELQ50 set in a subtle way. My 8000 Guilders audio was finished off by buying this 1400 guilders sub. If you want to make your good HIFI/Dolby Digital setup even better, buy this RELQ50. I think it can even make more expensive speakers sound much better. I was always sceptic about subwoofers, but now I am convinced: you should have one, one of good quality. A cheaper sub (ca. 700-800 Guilders)doesn't do the job half as well as this RELQ50.

Casual Listener

Strength:

Bass that gets me goosebumps all-over.

Weakness:

Size

Never having had any expierience with subwoofers before, my first thought when I opened the box was: "Look at the size of it, where am I going to put this thing?" Of course I had seen it and listened to it in the store, but somehow it seemed much smaller in the store. Perhaps because the demoroom was MUCH bigger than my livingroom. But I improvised and so, not only did I gain a subwoofer, but also a perfectly good coffee-table next to my couch. (The true audiophile will turn away in disgust when reading this, but I took precautions so that no harm will come to it, rest assured). So my setup is now:
-Sony STR-DB930 Dolby Digital receiver
-Four B&W DM601S2 speakers
-B&W CC6 Center speaker
-Rel Q50 Subwoofer
-Philips 710 DVD player
In short: This setup sounds better than the sound-setup of ANY cinema I have ever been to. And I have been to a few, I assure you. But I live in the Netherlands and in general they don't give a rat's behind about a decent sound system in movie theaters. So I envy you lucky Americans, because I understand things are way better over there.
In Subwoofer-reviews people go on and on about adjusting the controls "a notch here and a notch there" for months before they are satisfied. I just plugged the sub into the subwoofer outlet of my receiver, adjusted the controls, and never touched them afterwards, and am very satisfied with the results. Perhaps that is why I classify myself as a casual listener and not as an audiophile. Or it could be that my receiver knows exactly how to handle the subwoofer...
The sound is awesome. With DVD's the sub can produce earth-shattering bass without ever becoming boomy or tireing. At times it gives me goosebups or brings a tear to my eye, it sounds so beautiful. And with CD music the results are very good too. I listen to a lot of classical music and the sub really adds to the expierience. Yes, the cliché about "you don't know it's there until you switch it off" is absolutely true. The sound immedeately "goes flat".
So all in all I am a happy camper now, and really glad I bought this sub.
