Strength:

Earthshaking bass, excellent tone with DD5.1 and music

Weakness:

none

I got my PS450 at Good Guys as an open box unit. I had been lusting after this in the sound room for a long time, and found GG re-working the room....with the PS450 unconnected. I bought it on the spot, and I have not been disappointed. It rocks the house with DD5.1 movies, with Surround Sound II, and when listening to music. It has really made my whole audio system better, with all LFE directed to the PS450.

Strength:

Accurate bass reproduction. Price. Connections.

Weakness:

Shakes the dust off my ceiling fan.

Excellent Sub. I did get it for $380 and it was money well spent. It integrates seemlessly into my HT and for music it is not overpowering. The reason I am now a Polk Audio fan.

Strength:

Nice deep tight bass.

Weakness:

Still looking.

I really enjoy listening to music and watching movies a lot more now that I have my sub. It like the final piece to a puzzle. My entire speaker set up is Polk and the sub was just another great addition.

Strength:

Smooth Tight sound, Plenty of punch

Weakness:

None so far

I had been using an Audio Source SW15 modified with the additional insulation and was pretty satisfied. Now that I have the PSW-450 to compare to the difference is noticable. The punch is still there and just as strong as the 15" but the definition and clarity are much better. This sub brings out much greater detail in the lowest octaves.

My wife loves the fact that this sub is about 30 percent smaller than the Audio Source.

All in All a great addition to my system.

Bass Bass & lots of Bass

If U thought the PSW350 was good, wait till U hear the PSW450. This sub is soo very powerful & strong. It blew away everything else I had auditioned. Every thing from Rock to R&B, this baby pumps out bass w/o any distortion.
This is the best money can buy. Has LFE input for the 5.1 Ac-3 standard. I am hooked on Polk :-)

Strength:

Strong tight bass. Good crossover/setting controls and hookup options. Really strong sounding.

Weakness:

Really strong sounding. Have den that is approx. 16' wide and 20' long. House is morter construction and bass can be heard/felt strongly in entire house even at medium to low levels. It's not a "bad" problem to have, but one that must be considered if living in apartment or other 'close" type dwelling.

Replaced my aging JBL subwoofer with the Polk Model when it became availible at the local Crutchfield. Sound much tighter, and not as "boomy" as my old JBL. Have to give kudo's to my old JBL. It survived a partial house fire that warped the case and forced a cord replacement as original cord actually burned in two. Repair company declared a total loss, insurance paid and repair company asked if I wanted it back. As I was picking up other items that were repaired, took it home, replaced cord, and ? Worked as good as ever! Still running in kids den with their system.

Strength:

Tight, controled bass, quality construction, good knobs.

Weakness:

The finish could be more appealing to the eye, like the 650..

Well, this 12" blows my old 15" out of the water, when you buy a sub, make sure the driver is made out of quality materials. I was shopping around, looking at HSU and B&W subs, but for the price, this polk 450 can't be beat. Placement is crucial (as with any sub), but once set up properly (db meter) it blends in seemlesly with my rt2000's, cs1000p, and ls/fx's. Highly reccomended.

You can't go wrong with the Polk psw 450, very deep sound! I listened to both the NEW psw 550 and the psw 450 and I liked the 450 better. I got a great deal on the psw 450 ($300)! Don't get me wrong the psw 550 is a great sounding sub but for 3 bills the 450 was the way to for me.

Strength:

Attractive, solid.

Weakness:

A real subwoofer.. doesn't do much north of 120Hz. The manual should be much better.

I'm pretty unexperienced with subwoofers, so I'm just going to give my impressions upon having purchased a PSW450.

My first reaction was that it was a beautiful unit.. big, solid, well made. The baffle is not removable, so I don't get to look at the driver. Sizable heatsink on the back, lots of wiring options.

Hooking it up I initially used a 24' Monster Subwoofer Cable, hooked into the LFE RCA jack on my Yamaha HTR-5240 A/V Receiver. I plug in the PSW450, turn the Yamaha back on, and configure it to send bass out to the subwoofer as well as the two no-name mains.

I put on The Matrix, the lobby scene with the thumping music and gunfire. The bass, which was invisible back when I was first watching this scene with a Bose VCS-10 center, is now palpable, between the Polk CS400i and the PSW450. What's surprises me is that I can't really tell that the PSW450 is doing anything.. the PSW450's won't go high enough to be at all directional, so it seems very transparent. The only bass that I can detect coming from anyplace in particular is coming from the CS400i, but I simply feel the bass a lot more deeply from having the PSW450 going. I'm a bit taken aback at not being able to actually _hear_ much from the PSW450, and so I set out to see if I can get a bit higher frequencies from it.

I turn everything off, detach the LFE cable, and instead put the PSW450 in series with the mains using high quality 12guage speaker wire. This lets me use the PSW450's filter control to pull some of the upper bass from the signal going to the mains to the subwoofer. The Polk manual seems to recommend this approach, but the manual doesn't bother to explain whether this is the preferred wiring approach because it doesn't require an LFE port, and so is compatible with a wider range of stereo setups, or whether it's actually going to produce better results overall, even with a fairly smart A/V receiver.

Right now I'm quite happy with the PSW450 in watching DVDs, but unless a movie has a lot of low bass effects, I experience a lot more bass coming out of the CS400i. It's good to know that the PSW450 is there when I need it, but I'm not yet sure that it adds a great deal to my experience when watching the average movie.. it's just seems too low to come into play for most things.

I'm still happy with it as a very well made device, but it's going to take me a bit more time to decide how much enhancement I'm actually getting out of it.
