Strength:

price quality sound!

Weakness:

not to notice but muffling the port did change the sound

I bought the first one to back up a pair of pro 77s I never noticed any boominess probably because I put a couple of wooden cd racks on top of it. I suspect that big top piece probably acts as a passive radiator and interferes with the port. The the one in the front room was definetly boomy until I tried the stuffed port trick. I am on the look out for one to hook up to our new tv.

Strength:

$100! Nice performance ($100!) for the ($100!) price you pay. P.S., It cost's $100.

Weakness:

not a lot when you consider it costs $100.

Bought this guy for $99 from Radio Shack after reading a review in Home Theater that really liked it. It really performs well for the price you pay. I'm running it through a cheap sub amp, and it ain't bad. I'm in the process of upgrading my sub as I write this, but this guy has done a lot of thumping since I bought it. A very good value. Haven't tried the whole sock thing, but I guess I've got to now. Maybe I'll like it even more. Very nice sub for the price. Did I mention it costs $100?

Strength:

price--it's the cheapest *serious* subwoofer

Weakness:

it's a ported enclosure poorly tuned to the woofer-- but see below.

Right now this unit is being closed out at Radio Shacks for $75. The tuning of the box (diameter and length of the port) is all wrong for this driver-- it's very boomy and you wouldn't buy it on sound alone-- but it's fixable for zero cost, and the result is a nearly perfect match for the LX5 speakers which are also on sale this month.

Steal some old socks off the floor of your kids' rooms. Roll 'em up tight and jam 'em into the port. That's it. You won't believe the difference. Oh, you can try tuning the port, as I did, by inserting a longer, smaller-diameter tube, but the tube will be so long you'll have to turn the unit sideways. It's simpler to just plug the port, and your kids will never miss the socks.

And for 75 bucks, you have a decent driver, a solid, well-built cabinet and a fixed 200 Hz crossover. You can tinker with it some more later, but it's more fun to listen to it. Who cares that there's no amp inside?
