After listening to a handful of budget ($300-600) subwoofers -- Paradigm, Kef, Energy, Velodyne, Klipsch, and M&K -- I have decided that the V-75 mark II is the only model I could be completely satisfied with for under $600 dollars. It can play quite loud and deep (20 Hz according to the specs) and has superb control and tightness for the money. All of the others sounded somewhat strained, muddy, or weak in comparison to the M&K's 75 watt, sealed design. Therefore, I'd have to go with the V-75. One word of caution, though. The V-75 doesn't have speaker level inputs, so make sure your receiver/preamp can accomodate this. Very highly recommended when considering a sub in the under $600 range!

Just to correct the previous post, The M&K V-75 Mk II does INDEED have speaker level (high level) inputs, just no outputs. This will make this wonderful model more flexible to hookup. I am very satisfied with my purchase!

Strength:

Very deep bass from a low cost model.

Weakness:

Has some trouble resolving the deepest passages.

I've had my v-75 for four years. It has been a very good performer. It did take quiet a while to break in, and it really made a difference. I think that the v-75 is fairly musical though it doesn't quite resolve the lowest tones (pipe organs, synthesizers, ets) It might not be the best choice for those who listen to music with lots of deep bass, though other models might make more compromises than the M&K.

Strength:

Fast. Deep. Surprising power. M&K quality.

Weakness:

For the price, none.

Looking for a replacement for my 12" KEF, I stumbled across the reviews for this sub. My neighbor was selling his sub to upgrade to a nastier M&K twin-driver unit, so I looked it up here at AudioReview.com.

Decided to take a chance. I'm glad I did. This sub truly reveals what pure crap that KEF sub was--and it was more expensive. I'll hang on to the KEF mains, though--they sound sensational. Even more so now that the low bass is there.

Speaking of bass, for a "cheap" sub, the V-75 MKII gives much of the feeling of some of the pricey stuff out there like REL. I would love to get my hands on a REL stadium II, but for a thousand bucks less I have much of the feeling of that speaker right in my listening room now. I listen to a lot of acoustic jazz, and it takes a fast, accurate woofer to give you the bass line without sounding like a speaker. Just turn the crossover point down to the lower limits of the mains (in my case, around 55 Hz) and let it do its thing. The whole thing sounds more 'live' now than ever before with my previous sub.

I had disconnected the KEF sub because my Q55's really sounded much better without it. I wouldn't dream of doing that with the M&K. The best part? The KEF sub sold on ebay for only about $50 less than I paid for this great woofer.

Best $50 upgrade ever.

Strength:

Great sound, deep bass.

Weakness:

None yet

My system is used for 95% home theater and this sub is amazing. Definetely one the best investments I have made in my system. I have it set at the lowest volume setting -6 and a 75 crossover and it fills my smallish theater room.

My System:
Definitive Technologies BP10 fronts
Definitive Technologies CLR 2300 Center
B&W 303s in the rear
Rotel 1095 200 Watt 5 Channel amp
Proton AS-2631 preamp

Strength:

Huge amounts of delicious, word BASS! Plays down below 20hz in a very loud fashion.

Weakness:

None really. Maybe figuring out the propper placement for it, but what sub doesn't require that?

I luckily fell into this speaker because of my ignorance. You see, I bought a set of Bose Acoustimass 5's back in 93. I had those for a couple years all the while thinking they were a bit weak in the bass area. So, I decided to do a bit of a sub upgrade and I did some research. I finally decided on this one and took it home and tried to match it up with the bose. It worked well, but didn't really match. I always felt that the sub was just too good for those little turdy cubes, so I decided as soon as I had some money saved I would upgrade to a full 5.1 setup. Finally, three years later when I was done with school I went listening and doing research and because of my love for this sub I decided to pick up the M&K 750s and the 550s for the surround speakers. I was expecting a big change, but I felt like a total jackass for having those Bose for so long. What a waste of time and money the Bose were as the M&Ks knocked me and my neighbors straight on our asses! I am also suprised that M&K aren't as highly thought of around this page. It must be because of their small market share to consumer audio as they are more of a production speaker(which makes sense considering how good these speakers sound). Anyhow, but this sub! It won't let you down, nor will any of the other speakers they make! Kudos to M&K!

Strength:

Awesome tight bass (sealed enclosure really shines). Usuable bass response at 15Hz (!).

Weakness:

Enclosure could be heavier (it resonates a smidge).

It was extremely easy to blend my bookshelfs (took only 20 minutes). I could barely believe it when I played a test tone cd and heard something at 15Hz - and this from a sealed box.

Very tight, clean deep bass. Excellent build quality

Weakness:

I purchased this sub as the first step in upgrading my 25 year old speaker system. I was totally blown away. This sub made even my old crummy speakers sound great. It will out-perform may cheaper brands 200W subs. Now I can't wait until I can upgrade the remainter of my speakers to the M&K 750THX Select!!
