Strength:

heavy box-crossover is good and can adjust easily

Weakness:

the port in the back makes sounds of wind blowing at low tones at high power

a friend bought a jbl 8inch home sub for 299 and after a year its broke and out of warranty. i never really thought it sounded that good but he liked the name.....
i saw the asw10 and bought it, took it home and knew right away the sub was crap.you could blow on it and it would move.(not really but just about).with a sub that is that loose you wont get good return so i had a mtx 8000 and i stuck it in. its not easy to move them , they are tight!!!
right away the difference was night from day. the couch moves in waves, the floor shakes and i spent the next 2 hours going through my house getting all the rattles to stop makeing noise......
9 months later and its as good as new.
tho a 500 watt sub to 120 wont get the sub to perform as it should, but its all working in the way its indended too...well!!!!
if you come across one of these, get it and put a sub in it that will work the way you want it.
besides, have you priced a BOX lately?

Strength:

1. CHEAP!! DIRT CHEAP
2. OK sound but what do you expect for 100 bucks.

Weakness:

1. P.O.S.!!!!!!!!
2. Too much after bass, cheap materials

Okay... last night I was on this sight readong what every1 had to say about this, I was scared to believe what I read, poppin noises, overheating, lack of find a report that said it lasted more that a few months. Well I got it on december 4th, now its the 9th and it dies a few hours ago... the thing wasn't even put through its paces, i listened to it for about 4 total hours with the power at round 3 and the crossover at 70 and my reciever volume round 1 i figure bout 50 watts considering its 500 per channel. I had the bass flat on the equalizer and before I got to turn it up it just started popping and thats all she wrote.... im planning on going back to Costco, get my money back, and go get something worth the gas money. It was such a great price i couldnt resist, but you get what you pay for.

Strength:

Nice bass output

Weakness:

Placement is critical to sound

Well, like most everyone writing a review for this POS, mine died after using it for 45 days. I didn't purchase extended service from Best Buy not knowing it was going to die like this. I don't even use it too often, nor do I crank up the volume (which is why I didn't need something expensive, just something to add a little more bass to the sound) and yet yesterday when I turned it on, the little green light came on, but there was no sound. I took off the grill to see the speaker extended out while the unit was turned on, and see it relax if I turned it off. It's going to cost at least $30 for shipping and I think I'm going to go through with it. But here's my question: Why can't KLH recall these things? It seems to me that I am not the only one having this problem, so there is something fundamentally wrong with their product. I don't see why I should pay to have it fixed when they know there is something wrong with the product and yet they are selling it. Anyway, just thought I should throw in my $.02. By the way, UBID is selling tons of these online, so don't fall for it. I'm guessing people found out about them and are trying to dump them online for whatever they can get.

Strength:

Good clean bass when set right.

Weakness:

Nothing to say at this price

Ok, you folks having a problem hearing a pop sound. Hook a Y connector to the line in and it will clear this problem. This was my first sub and did fine as a starter. I've moved up to a HSU VTF-2 which is considered a real subwoofer and I hv to say get one if your budget allows $500. I still use the KLH in connection with my rear projection Mitsubishi and it enhances the tv sound greatly. Remember start with stereo music that is bassy set volume up till it just blends with amp, then adjust crossover up till you first hear it blend with amp also.

Longevity

I purchased the KLH ASW-10-120 on 9/21/00 @ Costco. Well, it lasted just short of 30 days. I experienced the popping that others have identified. Finally, last evening, it popped for the last time. Then only the green L.E.D. would stay on, but no sound was coming out. I left it hooked up and just played the main speakers on my system. When I checked the sub this morning, it still wasn't working and the heat sink for the amp on the back of the sub was hot enough to cook an egg. Finally, I said "that's it", boxed it up and brought it back to Costco to return it. I had a replacement in my cart, but decided to abandon the re-purchase of this item -- due to concerns about the heat being pushed out of the heatsink when it quit working. What if I had been on vacation and this unit kicked into gear, heated up and burned my house down??? It's not worth it. I wish that the recent reviews (from the past few weeks) had been posted before 9/21 -- I certainly would have avoide this purchase.

This morning, I went to Best Buy to look at the Sony SAWM40 (12" front firing, 120 Watt sub). It sounded good there, but they were out of stock - $199 was the standard price. I then found out that Sears also sells it for $199. I picked it up and for the past two hours, my ears have been in bliss. The Sony is the one to get!!!!

Maybe, I'm a little dramatic with the KLH, but when it quit working and I felt all of that heat - I realized it was not the sub for me.

Strength:

Low price, can be made to sound pretty good with some modification

Weakness:

none after modification

This is a review for the KLH ASW-10-120. First let me say that I am on a very tight budget when it comes to audio gear. I have four kids and a wife that is not into music, but likes movies. This keeps me from being able to spend whatever I want. After reading the reviews here I decided to buy the KLH subwoofer and make some modifications to it. First, I removed the driver and stuffed the cabinet with enough polyfill to fill it completely. Doing this blocked the rear port but there is still ample air coming from it. Next I placed the subwoofer on a 16x16" patio (ceramic type) block. I have not used the subwoofer enough to fully break it in yet (maybe 6 hours so far) and it already is sounding tight, clean, and blends well with my other speakers. I was watching a Santana DVD and the bass guitar sounded awesome, no boominess at all, and the kick drum was tight and clear. The volume of the subwoofer is set at about 11 o'clock.

Before purchasing this subwoofer I listened to several others in the 200-300 dollar price range (Yamaha, DCM, Polk, and even a Velodyne @ CC) and after the modification the KLH sounds better than the others.

Although this subwoofer would not be tolerable without the modifications (I listened to it for several hours before)it is an excellent value because for a few more dollars you can make it sound like the more expensive units. For value this subwooder is definitely a 5. For overall rating I give it a 4 because most will want to make the modifications.

I love the way Geddy Lee's bass sounds now!!

Strength:

Very very low price. Decent sound with a dolby digital/dts receiver. Phase switch

Weakness:

Boomy

Just picked this sub up at Costco, and you really can't beat this price. One nice surprise when I got it out of the box is that the low frequency is now 24 Hz. I haven't experienced any thumps when it automatically turns off, so that must've been improved. It's a little bit boomy and muddy, but I haven't put any insulation in yet. I took off the woofer to look inside, and it seems like the wire's been shortened, because I don't have enough length to take it out completely and set it on the side, but there's enough space to put insulation in. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a cheap sub. I definitely have no money to spend on velodynes.
