Weakness:

Port noise if you''re too close to the sub

It flat out rocks. It makes my upstairs floor rumble. Not bad for 8 inches. For the dude who said “it''s a tad bit boomy”. Two words, position and calibration. Strength:

Small footprint, Huge amount of base for 8" ( of course I knew I was buying an 8"er and not a 10 12 or 15, for the price nobody, nothing can come close I tried them all, heck even the Velodyne 10 didnt do a better job.

Weakness:

For the equipment, none yet. For the equipment review? The idiots who don''t write accurate reviews or maybe they are simple minded.

I have come back to add to original review, (and no rant this time). I still have a good deal of angst with reviewers who are incredibly dishonest and foolish such as several in this FINE PIECE OF EQUIPMENTS review. Wondering if you can get great sub base from an 8"er? You can and will if you get this one. It fit perfectly into a cabinet (the wife factor), I turned the thing up past half level and the base was way crazy. Super strong build, wicked true amplification, very tight and fast for music. It knocked the trinkets sp.? off the home ent. wall unit I built and the wife filled with expensive little things that get in the way.Rattled walls and windows. I set my system up properly of course.

Strength:

Price vs Value. Size (wife factor).High current amp, electronic crossover, precise equalization,Solid build.

Weakness:

No on off switch.

CAUTION: R_A_N_T I have used this site to gather information and to broaden my knowledge base. I find it funny and also ridiculous how certain reviewers, who seemingly must be lacking in intellegence, write reviews and rate product. They give low ratings for products which ARE advised and or reviewed to not be used for their intentions/application. Such as the slow witted guy who states you shouldn''''t buy this sub because it didn''''t deliver the volume or "boom" he wants from a 12" or 15" sub. DUUHHHH !!!Musically, (unless you wanna be the guy who has so much bass you can only listen to rap), this sub is excellent for delivering an ample amount of musical bass. (It rattled the panelling in the test room where I auditioned it.) Or the guy David who basically killed the ratings for this sub. I know he got a bad one, but I don''''t believe everything I read, he had the thing cranked and or if he had any professional audio man talking to him, he would know what and how to set up and burn this fine piece of equipment in. David, you made the effort to slam the equipment and get another, and not come back and tell people how it worked out? OK that''''s the end of my rant. This may be the best buy there is, for a small, unobtrusive sub. 5 and 2 year warranty. I mean come on, I got the thing with cables for less than 350 bucks. Huge (true rating) amplification, nice solid build, crossovers and lfe. If you rate this under 4 you are a liar! My system: ONKYO AUDIO VIDEO RECVR.- TX- DS 787 ONKYO DVD/VCD/CDR 6 DISC- DV-601 POLK RT 55i INFINITY 3 WAY POLK CS 400 CENTER JVC 19" STEREO PIP Even if you do not buy from a pro audio shop, you should go in and tap into the wealth of knowledge you''''ll find there. Go with an open mind and try to get there when it isn''''t very busy and find a person who is interested in helping rather than just selling.

Strength:

Low cost, high wattage amp (250w), small size (wife factor) and good performance with music.

Weakness:

Sometimes hard to find.

I am a little puzzled when reading other reviews that say this sub does not measure up to the likes of a Carver Sunfire or a 15" Velodyne. This is an 8 inch sub that can be easily had for under $300.00. Not over $1000.00 like the Sunfire nad Velodyne. For the money, there is nothing out there that can touch it. I also can''t understand why anyone would want to turn the volume up past about 35%. I have a 20 X 20 room with 9 foot ceilings, and it works fantastic at only about a 30% setting. I highly recommend the whole Def Tech Pro Cinema line, for the money they are untouchable. I also have had no turn on thumping at all.

Strength:

Power
Smoothness
Low end grunt
More power than I can stand!

Weakness:

Vibration in cabinet

This is my favorite component in my system. I absolutlely love it, and it does a real nice job or reproducing the low end in music. But I find it suceeds even better in a home theater environment. Great bass, without becoming muddy. Best Sub I have yet to try. Decently privced at $290
Buy it! It's last smooth

Strength:

Deep and Musical bass

Weakness:

None, unless you need unrealistically big explosions in home theater

Along with this sub, my setup includes 4 larger sized bookshelf speakers, and a graphic equalizer. Before this sub, my bass was always musical, but not deep. Now I have added depth, no muddyness, and every bit as musical. About the best quality bass ever, including high priced systems. Still amazed after close to 3 months. While it's the system as a whole that makes the sound, this sub does it right. Paid $322 for it, and easily deserves 5 stars.

Strength:

small size,stong box

Weakness:

cant move as much air as a large sub

I use my 15 inch def tech sub for my lfe,and i bought the 8 inch for my rear surrounds. They blend well with my bp-x2 speakers. But i wanted to see what it was made of,so i switched the sub to my lfe. I then played music,it blends well with my bp10s.very musical sub. But it was not all that deep compared to the 15,But it still impressed me with the bass it produced.Clean no distortion at all even at high levels.what a sub!anyhow i know it wont produce the sound of some biger subs, and i have the room for one fortunatly. i recomend that you use it for rear surrounds or center. i am going to get another one! Ya baby...and a def tech 3000 center. Do yourself a favor get subs put them all over the room.Throw out that coffe table, book case you dont need those. HEll get rid of the wife if you have to,but she will understand once she haers the sound from a good dts movie soundtrack. good luck

Strength:

none, really

Weakness:

boomy and sloppy

The bass produced by this sub is boomy and muddled. Great for movies, bad for music. I couldn't hear individual notes from bass guitars and real basses, just boom, boom, boom, boom. I bought the Boston PV 600 for about $80 more and it produces nice, clean bass with a 10" woofer instead of an 8". Also, the specs say that this Def. Tech sub goes down to 21 hz. Note that none of Def. Tech's specs are based on the industry standard of +/- 3db. For example, a sub that says its frequency response is 30-150hz at +/- 3db means that the sub reproduces a 30 hz signal at 3 db below 0 db (0 db being a perfect reproduction of a signal). There's just no way that this Def. Tech sub can reproduce 21 hz signals using only an 8" sub. My guess is that it reaches 35hz at -3 db. See my review for the Boston PV 600, if interested.

Strength:

size, power, value

Weakness:

avarage articulation (boomy) , no phase switch

The old business rule "Location, Location, Location" applies to all speakers but to subs in particular. After several position changes I still can not get this one right. It is OK, but it sounds little boomy. I have checked several other subs from Def Tech, JBL, Polk Audio and Klipsch, all below 400$. My impression was that all where not much better than this one. Do not get me wrong, it is solid performer but don't expect miracles.
Despite some enthusiastic reviews in the audio press and on this site it is important to understand that this one is a basic sub. So, do not expect that it will measure up to Velidyne or Sunfire.
