Strength:

price, price, and price! Oh it also shakes my entire house!

Weakness:

absolutely none!

First of all I purchased this sub brand new, not floor model either for $549 dollars. Enough said right there! Anyone looking for Def Tech, or PSB speakers could do no better than State Street Discount in Portsmouth N.H. I also wrote a review about the Def Tech BP10B. My system consists of Definitive all around: BP10B for fronts, C1000B center, BP2X for rear with the PF15TL+. There isn't a subwoofer even close to this tank! This sub could sell for double this price and still be a bargain! You simply cannot get a 15 inch,500 watt sub anywhere near this price, never mind one that performs like it. Watching the Matrix, using my Onkyo Integra DSP-5 dvd player, was simply awesome, it just cannot get any better. This sub thunders down to 14hz, and really rocks! Anyone who enjoys tremendous bass MUST go for the 15tl+, I can guarantee you won't be disappointed! I also bought my dvd player at State Street for $299, if you live in the New England area, this place is worth the drive, and remember no sales tax in New Hampshire! I purchased all the speakers, the dvd player and 80 feet of Esoteric speaker cable, and the subwoofer cable at State Street for a total of $2,435 dollars, their phone number is:1-800-242-1519. Tremendous discounts and top notch equipment! Good luck!

Strength:

Speed, bottom end reproduction, ease of setup, factory carpet spikes.

Weakness:

Cabinet is a bit large.

After using the PS200 for four months, I reluctantly decided to try the 15TL+ and see if doubling the amp wattage and going to a 15" woofer would make that much of a difference. The PS200 had performed remarkably, exhibiting speed and low end response in both audio and home theater applications. But, being American, bigger and more powerful seemed the way to go. Using a Yamaha 995 and B&W CDM speakers to complete the system, I set the sub 4" off the wall about 4' from the mains. First cut was Gerald Veasley's "Facing West" off of the LOVE LETTERS cd. Receiver volume to about 2, sub level at 12 o'clock, and hit play. JUMPIN' JESUS PALIMINOS!!!!! The first bass slide rattled my molars! Speed, low freq response, a monster bass sound. Had to back sub level off to about 10 just to get the cats from running circles around the kitchen island. Too cool, bass you can really hear and REALLY feel. Next test was the asteroid shower at the beginning of "Armageddon". One mistake: forgot to tell my daughter, who came home from school after the audio test. Let me simply say that she came running out of her room faster than if she just found out there were N'Sync tickets lying on the family room floor. Rattle the dishes? How about the house foundation. Enough analogies...this sub smokes. A remarkable feat in a $700 dollar speaker by a remarkable company.

Strength:

Great for HT, good enough for music (is there anything that is actually great for music?)

Weakness:

none for the price

I have been using this sub for 6 months. I have been looking for a HT receiver as well, so I had the opportunity to use the sub with my old stereo receiver and 4 different HT receivers (Yamaha, Onkyo, Denon and Marantz). I have Def Tech BP10s for mains.

The way this sub (and the whole system) sounds depends very much on the electronics. With the Denon receiver, it sounded a bit boomy, with the Onkyo it was OK but too heavy. The Marantz SR-7000 made it shine. The bass became tight, not exaggerated, both for music and HT. I enjoy my CDs even with the mains set to "small" and cut off at 100 Hz. The sub tends to make the overall sound warmer, which has nothing to do with the slight boomines I experienced with some other receivers. In other words, the bass cannot be better than what your preamp/amp/receiver can deliver. I found out that the low level (pre-amp) input works better with a decent cable.

The M&K MX-125 that another reviewer mentioned is a nice sub indeed but much more expensive. You would not give a bad review to Toyota Corolla, because the Camry is better, would you?

I would give it 5 stars for HT, 4 stars for music (in fact, I would not give any sub 5 stars for music but there are some $1000+ 10" or 12" subs that could be slightly better for music) and 5 stars for value.

Strength:

Brute power and musicality, small footprint for a 15

Weakness:

Wish it played down to 10hz at insane volume :( Guess I'll get the 18TL later. Tested it on a $1000 real-time-analyzer and it played loud and CLEAN to 17hz.

The previous reviewer must have severe wax build up in his ears or was auditioning a defective unit which is possible. Or he could be smoking crack.

I have 2 PF15TLs and neither of them produce the distortion he references. I regulalry run 22hz through them at absurd levels and they smoothly but tightly reporduce this frequency. They sound great on music and fantastic on home theater. My neighbors think they sound great ;) and their house is 30 feet from mine.

There is no better value in a sub for a >$600 sub. Check Home Theater's Sound & Vision Magazine review of this for a technical write up.

These two subs are in a 21' x 15' x 10' room crossed at 80hz set on 4 out of ten. They are 4 inches from the wall at the back and two feet from the adjacent wall on either side.

The bottom line is that I posted an objective review of the particular sub that I auditioned. Was the sub I heard set up properly and not damaged? Who knows, but if you bother to scroll through the other reviews here, I'm not the only one reporting distortion issues. If your PF15TL doesn't have the same problem, or you don't hear it (and I doubt it would be noticable in HT use) great. I'm happy with my sub (which btw, I would rate 4 stars for value and 3 overall) and you're happy with yours and that's what it's all about.

As for being a troll I'll let you decide. I posted a calm, rational review including my e-mail address. Robert resorts to anonymously posted inflammatory remarks. You do the math.

I'm leaving 4 stars this time around because I'm not trying to unjustly influence the overall rating of this sub, just clear the record.

Strength:

Deep, accurate bass with many features that allows you to control it. It is a very musical bass that has tight and defined sound.

Weakness:

To many fine adjustments to be made. "But what do you expect from a subwoofer"

In my opinion one of the best subwoofers out their in the market.

Strength:

Power, deep bass, controls, price

Weakness:

Lack of at least one pair of high quality RCAs--I think it would be a nice touch to include it.

In my some 20 years of audio experience, I have auditioned many subs, but never got to the point of pulling the cash out...until now. I recently auditioned seven subs placed in the same room, all along the same wall, using the same components. The primary source was music via the CD player, but I also switched to a DVD for the HT experience.

The following is the line-up and consisted of high end subs from the respective companies: Sunfire True Subwoofer, the Sunfire Jr., 12" Infinity, 12" Def Tech, 15" Def Tech (15TL+), 15" Klipsch, and a 12" Boston Acoustic. The Boston sounded great, muscially speaking, but seriously lacked power. The Klipsch was so cheaply made (falling apart) that I dismissed it outright. I've seen other Klipsch speakers fall apart, so at least my experience with them has been consistent. Both Sunfires performed great for HT, but lacked smooth transitions with music. Nevertheless, I was impressed with their small size and big sound. Both the 12" Def Tech and Infinity could not extend to the lower frequencies I desired, and actually had a little too much upper bass punch for my taste. The Infinity was underpowered as well. I felt the Boston sub was comparable to the PF15TL+ for sound quality and low frequency extension, but at twice the cost and a seemingly underpowered amp it was obvious to me which sub was a better value.

At home, the 15TL+ was placed near the corner about six inches from the listening wall and about one foot from the side wall. I ran the Adcom preamp out to the sub, then RCAs from the sub to the Adcom amp which supplies power to the JBL 4410 studio monitors. I set the 15TL+ variable high pass crossover to 100Hz and the low pass to 70Hz. These settings seem to work well in this environment. For music I chose Mannheim Steamroller's Fresh Aire series 1-6, Classical Gas w/ Mason Williams, Ry Cooder, Phil Keaggy, Santana, various blues artists, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, and other artists.

First impressions: Wow, amazing sound! My experience is that many subs tend to "muddy" the sound with too much mid and upper bass with older music. Not with the 15TL+. It added just the right amount of punch to the kick drum, and the occasional deep bass line was smooth, not overpowering. Listening to more current, better produced music was a complete new experience. The bass literally shook and rattled things (too many to list), and I found myself turning the gain down to about 1/3. This sub produced tight, deep bass with nary a strain. A quick listen to Pink Floyd further amazed me with the bass output of this sub. This is my initial review and have many more hours to fully examine the 15TL+ and tweak the settings; however, I am very impressed with its sound and wanted to share my thoughts.

A friend also bought this sub and I listened to his while we watched The Matrix and the Eagles on DVD. Watching and listening to the Eagles DVD was like being there in concert. I'm sold! When considering price and sound, I believe there is no better value for a sub than this one.

Strength:

Good home theater and music sub

Weakness:

none found yet

I purchased this sub after auditioning several different models. I was prepared to spend $800-$900 on a sub, but I found nothing in that price range that "blew away" this sub.
Good low end, keeps up with music without a problem. This sub sounded best directly under my TV, between my mains, which worked perfectly for my setup. I have Klipsch KLF30 mainsm,Klipsch C7 center and KSF-S5 rears, this sub can overpower even these speakers if turned up too loud. The controls are nice and allow you to dial in the sub to your speakers with ease. The auto shutoff feature is nice, you never have to worry about switching the sub off.
I calibrated my sub to 82dB on the sound meter, with my Sony555ES set to -5dB. The volume control on the sub is about 1/2 way. This is where I run it for music, sounds rich and deep. Turn up the reciever control to +5dB for movies and you have house shaking bass. Very nice front firing sub.

I had the Velodyen CT150 sub for about 8 months and thought that was the last sub I would buy. Then one day I went over to a friends house to help him hook up his new gear and one of his new gear was the Definitive Technology TL15+ sub. after getting every thing up and running I could not beleive the bass that was coming out of that sub...It was tight and very accurate and got ver low. After playing around with the settings I brought my Velodyne CT150 over his house for a comparsion. Not to mention that the CT 150 was a much larger cabinet with the same size 15 inch woofer. The difference is the Velodyne has 300 watts and The Def. tech. has 500 and man does it show it. Well after watching 2 moview I went home and boxed my Velodyne up and ordered the Def. tech. TL15+ what a totally different monster the impact of this sub puts you right at the scene if you are looking for a sub that will ROCK your house run oyt and grab this sub you will not regret it!!!!
