Boston Acoustics PV400 Subwoofers

Boston Acoustics PV400 Subwoofers

DESCRIPTION

The PV400 uses a 7-inch (180mm) DCD driver in a dual-band-pass enclosure. The dual 2-inch (50mm) down-firing ports are flared at both ends to reduce audible turbulence. Its 65-watt high-current amplifier has speaker-, line-, and crossover bypass connections.

Strength:

Small footprint. Tight Bass. Quick bass. Surprising range on the scale. goes deep for a 7" sub. Price.

Weakness:

Deep base can sometimes be thin. Best in a smaller room.

I bought this sub as a floor model. I was looking at this sub anyway because of its size. When I saw id was a 100.00 off the normal retail, I couldn't resist. I do not have the room to place a normal size sub so I started looking at the mini subs. M&K makes a great mini sub for 600.00. Def Tech also has one for 400.00. But at 299.00, the Boston outperformed the Def Tech by far. This sub will not create a earthquake type bass but for movies, it is perfect. Subs add more midrange than bass anyway and this baby does is perfectly. Highly recommended if you have a smaller room and a budget. Even in the large demo room, the sub filled it nicely.

Strength:

Smooth bass, not boomy. Small footprint.

Weakness:

Spring clip wire terminals, I would prefer screw type terminals like on the PV800.

I picked up my PV400 to augment the sound from a pair of Boston CR8's purchased for my upgrade from an Aiwa mini-system with an 8" sub woofer to a Carver HR-742 receiver and PSD-36 CD changer .
Now don't get me wrong, I am extremely happy with the power and range of my CR8's (also reviewed at audioreview), just wanted a bit more push on the bottom end.
This sub is just the ticket for me. I set it up according to the instructions, replacing the old Aiwa TS-W5u that was set at 60Hz, and I find it has a much smoother delivery than the Aiwa. With the crossover set at it's minimum setting of 75Hz, I feel it complements nicely the sound of the CR8's, without being boomy or having an overbearing thump. My girl and I listen to a wide variety of music and so far this sub seems to blend with the CR8's instead of overshadowing them. It seems equally happy playing Floyd Cramer or Santana without adjustment.
I'd like to thank all the people who review products in audioreview for helping me make very satisfying choices for my speakers.

Strength:

Handsome look. Small but powerful for it's size. Very impressive.

Weakness:

Looks deceiving

I love the cool breeze the speaker generates as it moves the air. The rumble causes you to ckeck the sub volume and your heart. The bass is breath taking.

Strength:

Tight, Accurate, Fast and very good price ($799 NZD)

Weakness:

None to really speak of, maybe it could have the vaneer look due to its size

I am running audio only (Micromega stage5, plinnius 8150 amp and Boston VR40's). Although this complete package is enough to wet any appetite for good listening I wanted to add alittle more bass to the sound while down at lower levels.
The Little PV400 blew away the other 3 subs mentioned above in alot of different areas while volume level was down under the half-way mark. this is a very good sub.... period.
It is well worthy of 5 stars when considering all.
