Strength:

Very small footprint. Excellent musical clarity as well as booming quality for films. Quality build. As with the entire VR series, the cherry finish is attractive as well.

Weakness:

None that I can tell.

Absolutely excellent subwoofer. The musical quality is superb. I replaced a $500 BIC Venturi sub that was primarily a boomer for movies. The Boston sub has brought new life to my music, as it is extremely clear down to the lowest levels. That''s the other thing--my old sub only went down to abou 35Hz, while this one goes down to 22Hz. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Plus, the 1000 watt amp in this bad boy makes the whole couch shake, something not previously possible with the old sub. You may think that $1000 or so is a lot for a speaker that has limited range, but if a sub does what it is supposed to do, as the PV1000 does, it makes a WORLD of difference.

Strength:

Clean, pure accurate sound. The bass is not overpowering, but blends perfectly.

Weakness:

None so far.

I was in the store and I had no intention of buying +$1000 sub. I heard Steeley Dan playing in one of the sound rooms and I asked, "Where is the bass coming from?" When I learned that it was the PV1000, I walked out of the store with it. The bass enveloped the room and blended with the highs so well that I felt that I was in a studio listening to a live performance. After you pay your bills and you can stretch you wallet, it is worth it!

My setup includes Mirage OM-10 fronts with an OM-C2 center, complemented by OM-R2s in the rear. My room is 18x20 and it takes a lot to fill it up. My Pioneer Elite THX Ultra Certified VSX27-TX receiver drives the sound.

Small size, High Power, Accuracy, Musicality

Weakness:

I am thankful that someone in my area felt the same way about this sub as Dbow does. He returned it after 2 days, and I was lucky enough to have been there when it went back on the floor at a "used" price. I have always understood why many audiophiles don't like sub's and don't use them. Though most sub's do well adding to the volume and impact of the lower frequencies, most often this is done at the cost of some definition or clarity and at times the addition of an occasional whump or thump that represents no note any musical instrument might make. The PV-1000 does none of this, and in my opinion the only difficulty presented by the PV-1000 is fully describing the positive impact it has on sound. I know a sub's freq. response is limited to the 50-60 cycle region but the PV-1000 is so fast and accurate and so in sync with the main speakers that the sound seems to be intertwined. The power of this unit provides the fullness of sound and the accuracy makes it a perfect partner lending a lush richness to music without calling any attention to itself. I think the PV-1000 succeeds here because the innacuracy of most sub's obscures some of the other music, while the PV-1000 does not. Your main speakers sound better in ranges not reproduced by the sub because the PV-1000 isn't doing anything to interfere or muddy things up. This sub is so in sync that you are never sure what it is doing until you turn it off, and the rich sound is suddenly diminished. To my mind this is the highest compliment anyone could give a good sub. While I am still experimenting with the home theater aspects of the PV-1000, and am not sure if it surpasses the VR-500 and VR-2000 combination for explosions and car crashes, I don't really care. I haven't experimented much, as I am so hooked on the enhanced music it provides. This sub is special, best value for the dollar I ever spent on music equipment. Set it's volume on 10 o'clock and give a listen. You too Dbow. Give it time, it'll come to you.

Strength:

Very accurate and musical

Weakness:

I bought this to replace my lightning struck BU150 and the improvement is amazing. This sub is much tighter and more accurate than the Infinity, but it still has all the depth and punch you need for home theater or loud music even in a big room (mine is 18X30). The sound is crisp and musical, not boomy like the Infinity, and it integrates seamlessly with my B&W bookshelf speakers. The very small size and beautiful cherry cabinet is a big plus (high wife acceptance factor). My insurance company paid for this, and so my value rating might be a little exaggerated, but it's hard for me to imagine better performance for the price.

This Sub produces tight, Fast, deep, and controlled Bass. 1,000 watts of power from a box that takes up only 1sq Ft of Space! The B@W sub I had was good, but just to big, looked out of date compared to the new Sub's from BA and Velodyne. $1200 might be a strech, but this thing Rocks the House, Loads of options and controls( crossover, Polarity, etc...) Finished in Beutiful Natural Cherry with a gray slate top. A great combo with my B@W CDM 1SE's

Strength:

Appearance, size, controls, power (1000 watts continuous), quite musical

Weakness:

Not a big deal but it would be nice if there was a "stand by" mode.....manual says it can be left on all of the time but I'm a little paranoid.

Appearance.....
The PV1000 is about a 14" cube and mine is the black ash finish (to match my other speakers). The gray top and front accents make it a pleasure to look at....much better than a plain black box with a cheesy cloth grill. The powered speaker is downfiring and the rear passive radiator are not completely visible but what can be seen looks nice do to the sturdy metal mesh grills. The front controls lend themselves easily to occasional tweaking and look sturdy and businesslike. The small size make placement simple and non-threatening.
Performance....
At first hook-up the sub was a little boomy and inaccurate. Once I moved it around a little to find a good spot, it sounded better. Another problem was with the supplied rubber feet installed, the sub walked all over the room, then once I found it's best sounding spot, I used the supplied velcro pads and now it sits still and sounds much tighter. Adding a Monster sub cable cleaned up the last of the problems....it is now tight and accurate with plenty of low end power. While 1000 watts may seem like overkill, power equals clarity. I'm no audiophile, but I play bass in a local metal band and you need loads of power to get a clean bass sound.....I need a 1200 watt amp to keep up with my guitar player's 100 watt setup. ANYWAY, with my Yamaha RX-V1000 (100x5), Boston VRM50 (front and rear) and Boston VRMC (center) the PV1000 blends in perfectly and keeps up with good, strong, clear bass at all levels.
Performance....
For music, I find the sub to be more musical than the other subs in it's class (accept maybe the Monitor Audio ASW210...but that didn't blend well with my other speakers).
For movies, it is at it's best. Explosions, roars and gunfire sound realistic. When it needs to boom and shake the room, it does with no straining whatsoever. When it needs to be subtle and quick...it pulls that off good too....no droning on and on.
For PS2 (added benefit), when playing a sports game like Madden 2001, there is nothing like feeling the floor shake and hearing the BAM when two players collide. When killing aliens in Unreal Tournament.....gunfire and explosions sound real intense and serve to get me more immersed in the game....even at low volumes a 4am when I'm trying desperately to get to the next level AND not wake up my girlfriend :-)
My review is probably partially skewed by my love of my whole sound system...the Boston VR series is killer...and the PV1000 blends perfectly with them and provides the backbone, so please take that into account when reading my review. Boston did a wonderful job getting great performance out of this sub and then went the extra step of making it a very attractive piece of furniture to boot.
For value, I believe paying over $1000 for a sub is silly, but you get what you pay for and the performance, size and appearance make it worth the extra $$$$$

Strength:

Bass is tight and clean

Weakness:

Not what I expected from a $1000 sub

I have to crank the dial on the front of this thing up to 11 to get anything noticeable out of it. It goes to 12 but will clip if you turn it to that point.

Set on 11 I can just barely feel the bass in the floor.
Not what I expected at all. Good quality but not enough of it.

Anyone have the same experience?
Have to crank the volume on the sub?

Odd that all the other reviews are very positive.

Strength:

Packs a wollup. Don't let the small size fool you. This sub has power and incredible clarity of low bass tones.

Weakness:

Not one!!

I replaced a broken Velodyne FSR-1500 with this unit and let
me tell you I'm one happy camper. Boston Acoustics has come
a long way with the introduction of the PV-1000. Both fullness as well as clarity and sharpness are difficult to
blend into the same unit but this sub has it too spare. I use it both in my CATV audio feed, as well as DVD. Needless to say the DVD experience kicks ass, but surprisingly the feed from CATV was vastly improved from the Velodyne I had been using previously.
Front panel controls are much appreciated too. I can't understand why other subs hide the controls so you have to guess at what your doing or pull out a 150# box to access the rear mounted controls and push the sucker back.
Compelling reasons to consider this unit are basicly everything about it. Ease of access to controls, clarity and sharpness, power to spare.
