Just got screwed on this one. Purchased from Ubid, let the buyer beware! The thing is huge and passive! My fault for not looking at the size but I'll blaim UBid for the adding a warning on the passive part. I'm not sure how I'm going to hook the thing up now. Suspect this will become a large paper weight! Other purchases from UBID Ok.

Strength:

Cheap THX Rated Subwoofer(s)

Weakness:

Heavy, Huge & PASSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I too bought this from U-Bid without knowing it was passive. Be VERY CAREFUL before you purchase this sub, as I have a feeling that most of these will end up as heavy, expensive paper weights. I lucked out in that I contacted U-Bid, and told them that it was defective (hell, let them try to test the thing!!)the day after it arrived (I believe that you have a 7 day window to return "defective" merchandise for a full refund). Anyway, they (UPS through U-Bid) picked the thing up, and 9 days later, I received a FULL refund on my credit card. While the sub is probably a good one when properly configured, I'm upset at U-Bid for:
a) not listing it as passive
b) not mentioning that it's only THX in pairs of two (who has room for two of these monsters??)
Anyway, a lesson has been learned...

Good sound

big

I have an in house THX system in a room with a projector and screen. The HT1 system in for a home theater with a projector. The front LCR are vertical with very little verical disbusement to minimize ceiling and floor reflections. The twin tweeters cancell each other out off axis in the vertical direction and the driver set is identical with the surround to keep the tonal balance. The woofers aren't self powered. They are built into the walls and any electronics in them can't be serviced. The only component that could need fixing is the woofer, which can be accessed from the front. The center channel goes behind an acoustically transparent screen. When set up in the right room, in the right way, with the right equipment, this system is fantastic. And it costs far less than other systems with similar performance.

Strength:

Passive, so you can pick a strong clean amp to do the job right.

Weakness:

Passive, you need an amp to get the thing to work. For true THX rating needs to be in a pair...

I was just looking at uBid and noticed this sub. I can see a few people getting frustrated by this one being passive.

To anyone who has recently picked one up and finds it un-usable because it's passive, let me know. I'd be game to pick one more of these up for a reasonable price.

These are not bad quality, just inconvenient. Compared to the current plethora of quality powered subs that have a smaller profile in the same price range, it's hard to justify these unless you get a good deal...
