Strength:

construction, great sound throughout the spectrum

Weakness:

they say the grills are made out of cheese

Many of the reviewers here have said that the grills are made out of cheese, but I have not found this to be the case. The speakers I recieved came with grills that were made out of some thin, foamy cloth material which I found to be rather pleasant-looking. As for the sound, they are the best-sounding speakers I have experienced near this price-range. Some of my freinds who are self-described audiophiles and who have spent several thousand dollars on their speakers and I have to say that these sound better than most of theirs.

Weakness:

terminal mount it is plastic (prone to leakage)

as the rest of you, i got my 89's at ubid in oct for 129.00 each. after much playing here is my input:
1 bass sounds good. sound down to 50 hz are clean, bass is not boomy nor are voice's chesty.
2mid bass is exellent!!!
3mids and highs are smooth.
the stageing is very good. the speakers will vanish in the sound stage.
someone said that they were made in china so i dissected mine and found that they are assembled in yorshire uk and the drivers appear to be from den (vifa??) nothing inside says china or japan. that terminal that the wires go to is just screwed in w/no seal so people who develope rattles, i would check this 1st. overall construction for a speaker in the 1000 ducket class is slightly above average.i personally like it's appearance. grills are delicate to say the least.
i also got the center channal, and the 83's as surrounds. earth is shaked by a cerwin vega powerd sub set at around 80 hz. i like sound that is in your face for music and seemless timbre matching for movies. these work great. amp is a technics sf-dx7. it is a 6 channel amp w/the 500 series dolby digital / dts processor. this amp will drive them but if you have a high current amp or reciever you will be totally stoked.

Weakness:

grill is kinda cheesy, but doesn`t cause a problem

Got these at ubid for 200 each with approx 50 shipping each,at least I didn`t have to pay sales tax.
I bought these solely on Wharfedales name and a dim memory of quality with good sound.I am glad I was not disappointed.Having used them for over 3 months now here is my opinion. These speakers are everything I was hoping for!Wonderful highs, rumblings lows, full midrange. With my new Denon AVR 2800 in Dolby Digital mode,my Wharfedale SP83 rears, the Sapphire center channel,my home theater experience is very exciting. No sub needed.Having quality sound with your movies adds tremendously!
So hows the stereo you wonder?Even my wife commented how her Sara Brightman sounded corret now.The stereo separation easily noticed, and these speakers can really take the power.I have gone as high as plus 10 on the volume and noticed no distortion, but that was only a momentary spike as that volume is icredibly loud.
My best advise is to be patient and let the speakers break in,they will sound better the longer you use them. The gold plated terminals are very versatile,I biwired mine with monster cable. There is a noticeable difference, mostly higher highs and lower lows. The position of the speakers is important regarding how much base you get but is not critical.Overall rating of 4 stars because I haven`t heard everything, but I did check out CC,GG, sears etc. These are as good or better than anything they had!

Grill did not fit well

Received the speakers yesterday. Like with the Denon AV4800, the wife had a cow. Got them setup and positioned 24" back of speakers from the wall, and angled 40 Deg in. Picked up some 12 Ga monster wire and hooked them up. First test was Oleta Adams, Power of one, wife decided to let me keep them. "Wonder if I should tell her about the Sapphire center I bid on?" Played a few CD's and the Sting Concert DVD, was very impressed with the sound qualities. I am letting them break in to movies and music both. Grills are of very light construction, I prefer them that way, no shading or color added to the sound with them on. There are 8 push pins on them to help them seat, could only get a few to seat, but the grills are on and have not fallen off. While the boxes are of not the best construction they seem to do the trick. I am totally happy at this or higher price point. After a month of breaking them in will update the review. UPS did not destroy or damage the shipping boxes. I think with the grills on the speakers look impressive and sound the same. Thinking of how to position a second pair for real in my HTS. Just don't have the room.........yet.

CRISPY CLEAR, GREAT PRICE

Weakness:

BOXES COULD BE BETTER, BUT NOT AT THE PRICE I PAID.

I WAS VERY SCEPTICAL WHEN I PURCHASED THESE SPEAKERS FOR SUCH A LOW PRICE, BUT I FIGURED I'VE BLOWN 400$ BEFORE, THIS WAS THE BEST MONEY I EVER COULD SPEND. I HOOKED THEM UP TO A B&K PREAMP AND AMP. THE SOUND WAS AWESOME. CAN'T GO WRONG, BUY THEM. KEY IS GOOD POWER GOING IN GETS GREAT SOUND.
