Strength:

for the price I should say bass is really good, mids and highs are ok

Weakness:

cheap binding post, grill, lacks of details

Well, I really really happy with this MFM... It's really really worth a lot for $200 shipped!!!
I want to upgrade these speakers, but than I have problem finding the right speaker to replace MFM. What I found when comparing those speaker, MFM lacks of details on mids and high, lacks of soundstage (compared with B&W CM4 and paradigm Rev 60). The bass is good and can go really low (you can get away without a sub). But the good thing is this MFM just cost me $200.. dynaudio audience 72 is $1500... hmm think twice to upgrade my MFM!!!
note: Bose is nothing compare to MFM... =)hehehe

my system: HK 210, Rotel RMB 1075, HSU VTF-2, MFM-5, Modus center( not a good center, but they cheap hehe..)

Strength:

Clarity, looks

Weakness:

Bass response at high volume

Like most others reviewing this item, I purchased my speakers from Ubid. Remarkably, they were delivered in just three days, were undamaged, and looked great. I wish I could be that complimenatary about other Ubid transactions, but that is another story.

It has been a while since I bought any speakers. The Infinities that I had been using for years had much larger woofers, but were more boxy in shape than the tower style of the MFM-5s. When I first hooked these new speakers up I was pleasantly surprised at the clear, well-defined sound of music and DVD. I have since added center channel and surround (Klipsch) and am totally pleased with the performance of these speakers. I am sure that if I won the lottery I would invest in roof rattling, expensive speakers (and probably lose my marriage in the process), but considering the price, the aesthetics, etc., this has been a fine purchase for me. I have casually compared the sound of the MFM-5 with Infinity, Polk, Yamaha, Sony, and other tower speakers at the local retail establishments. You can pay a lot more for speakers, but I doubt that you will see the results of the investment unless you have a very trained ear.

I have not bi-wired mine yet, as I do not entirely understand how this hooks up to the receiver. The written materials from Wharfedale are not too helpful in this regard. However, I am pleased as it is, and it can only get better.

As mentioned by others, if you want booming bass, you will need a sub. The bass is fine for me, but I don't need to feel it all the way to my socks to enjoy it. It is plenty enough to get my wife to complain. What more could I ask for? (Why do women hate bass?) The real strength of this speaker is the mid-range clarity. You will be happy with this.

I think you will enjoy this speaker and I give it a high rating for the price range. Mine are rosewood, and I don't think they look cheap at all. To the contrary, they are much more attractive than the tower speakers at three times the price in the retail stores.

Strength:

Superclean sound, price price price

Weakness:

None that I see so far

This review is actually for the Monitor 148's from ubid.
There is no posting for them yet, but I did see a posting under the MFM5 where someone said he'd like to see a posting for the 148's. These are TL(transmission line) speakers with a 3" soft dome mid and 2 8" woofs. The bi-amp or bi-wire is different than the MFM5's, one terminal set for mid/high, the other for lows.

I just got these from ubid for the total price of $263. This included shipping and everything! Recieved them in 3 days from close of bidding.

Well. I have been auditioning speakers for the last several months and have listened to lots and lots. Most of you probably won't believe this, but these things come closer to the B&W nautilus 802's than anything else I've listened to, and they're not even run in yet. They did not sound so good when I first hooked them up(They are bi-amped with a Rotel RMB1095 and a Golden Tube SE40 amp), but I left them playing at about 1/3 volume for the last couple of days while I've been at work, and the sound is now amazing, and seems to be improving everyday.

If you have a few bucks of pocket change, snatch these baby's up while the gettins good!!!

Strength:

perfect sound for the buck

Weakness:

I havent found any except those who compare these to 1500 speakers

The reviewer below claims No sound stage.... not true.. claims no sonic detail... also falacious... these are MONITORS.. and the sound is clear as a bell. The lack of soundstage can only be imagined by this reviewer as due to poor positioning... they need 8-12 feet seperation for perfect staging.. Now they MAY NOT be as clear as the Paradigm series, (I think they are equal to any B&W speaker ive heard.. but have had no side by side direct comparison) ... but there not $1500-$2000 either... They are an excellent choice in speakers for under $500.. and at $160 its a No-Brainer. If you have limited space (these are 8" wide and 32" tall) you cant miss.. And NO the bass isnt of subwoofer energy.. if you want that kind of performance, buy a subwoofer... for HT a SW is a must anyway. I don't know why people insist on comparing Lamborginis to Toyota Spyders.

Strength:

Excellent sound stage right out of the box.

Weakness:

I am too impressed to notice

Right out of the box they sounded better than the AR Stature 50's which they replaced. Good efficiency, excellent dispersion, accurate sound, impressive bass in mid 30's at least, and great midrange presence. I was not ready for these to sound this good and have ordered another pair. For less than $200 shipped, this speaker compares with any I have heard for $500 a pair or even more. Please grab a pair before they are all gone. While this is not the ultimate in small tower speakers, I have never heard anything this good for even three times the price! Why are these being discontinued? Of all the Wharfedale speakers I have heard (Opal series, Sapphire, Modus 8) this is the best balanced performer of them all. If they sound better after a break in period, I will be quite impressed to say the least. For their price point, a full five stars.

Strength:

just an excellent speaker in everyway (after about 300 hrs)

Weakness:

none now the base cleared up and is very good

well after about 7 weeks these speakers sound even better than my first report.. the bass began to clear up at loud volumes after about a month (never had a problem at moderate volumes) Now the MFM-5 actually is so close to a perfect match to my modified BIC 736s its very hard to tell them apart. (this is a positive statement for the BICS and the MFM-5s. You really cant go wrong with either brand as long as you have your crossovers on the bic 736's modified)

sitting in the middle with the 5 channel stereo switched on is sonic heaven.

Setup: Denon av-2800
Fronts: Wharfedale MFM-5

Strength:

smooth highs, excellent overall sound at mid volume levels

Weakness:

bass get sloppy at higher volumes

Driving with a
Harmon Kardon AVR210, Biwired

I wanted PSB 4t towers but my budget said no so I took a chance and order these from UBID. At $166.00 deliverey for the pair I figured I could resale them if they did not work out. I must say at this point I am cautiously optimistic. I have really only run them about 5 hours to this point because of wife and kid concerns, but other than the sloppy bass at high levels I am very happy. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the bass cleans up after break in as others have mentioned. Even if they do not I will still be resonable happy with them because of the value. I would say that these sound very comparable to the Paridigm Phantom and maybe as good as the Energy xl 25's. I would say there not quite as good as the PSB 4t or the Paradigm Montior 5's. For Jazz and well done blues music such as Joe Satriani and Stevie Ray these speakers are awesome. Acoustic drums are really exceptional. If your taste in music leans this way these speakers are are an awesome value. I have noticed that on some of the "alternate" music as mentioned the bass get a little sloppy and even the mid range starts to sound slightly muted or "in the back ground" . It really seems to depend on the recording. I guess that if I had to sum it up I would say that these speakers have flashes of brilliance but in general well above average overall performance especially considering the price. If you can afford the PSB or Paradigm's I would go with one of them but if you don't have the cash I think these are a great value. I hope once they are broken in they will be a outstanding value. I will try to update in a month or so.

Strength:

Sound! Highs, mids and lows are all great. Size is great for those with limited space.

Weakness:

Requires a bit of patience during the break-in period. The Out-of-the-box sound changes for the better when bi-wired and after 30 hours use.

I work for the University of Phoenix in the enrollment department of the Online Campus. Call anytime if you want to go back to college online. It's very convenient. Now,
the Wharfedale MFM-5 speakers: THESE SPEAKERS ARE AWESOME! They require a few days breakin and bi-wiring. Any review of these speakers written without a fair break in period and without
taking advantage of the bi-wiring feature should probably be overlooked. Audio impatience has caused some folks to turn sour on absolutely marvelous speakers. I kicked myself for that in the past, too. But, I've had a chance to listen to some quality speakers, both new and vintage, and these Wharefedales rank up there with some of the best I have
heard. They are great for an average sized room. The MFM-5s offer a great soundstage and quality sound in all three ranges. Over the course of my break-in period, the bass developed rather nicely. The bass now has a very punctual and powerful quality whereas out-of-the-box the bass was a bit muddy. The midrange renders male and female vocals
with great ease, strength and beauty. I recommend these to you if you are in need of a pair of quality speakers and you don't want to spend over $200.00. There is little to compare these speakers to in that price range other than other Wharfedale models currently auctioned at Ubid. While my Ubid experience was frustrating, these speakers are worth the price and the wait. They are accurate and honest,
more so than many of the Klipsch products I have previously owned. Again, I heartily recommend the Wharfedale MFM-5s.
E-mail any questions. Thanks!

Price

It was pretty scary to purchase a set of speakers without listening to them, but after reading the reviews I went ahead and purchased them for $185 shipped. When I first hooked them up the sound was very muffled. I waited a week, hoping that they just needed to be broken in, and the speakers still sounded bad. Then I biwired the speakers, much better!! You really can't go wrong with the price. I would recommed them to anyone.
