Strength:

price vs. quality. Very natural and pleasant sound, impressive bass - try SADE "Lovers Rock" and be amazed.

Weakness:

as everybody else has noticed - flimsy grills. For the price I'll be ashamed to come up with any weaknesses.

Having recently immigrating to the U.S It was time for me to build a new system - leaving some faboulus Jamo Concerts behind. On a limited budget I decided on a set of wharfedale 8.4 because of their high reviews from various sources, thus limited pricetag. Also I like the design principle of a slim cabinet using high performance 6.5 inch kevlar drives, with an enourmous stroke - this usually means very fast and controlled bass. Further I was impressed by the range from 30HZ. This speaker is build suprisingly well for the price, no boomy thin cabinet. Biwire option, and internally wired with Monster xp. Highs are very pleasant and airy without hardness. Midrange full and above all natural. Bass is very tight and defined, not as deep as any 12-15 inch, but with impressive and surprising body and depth. Overall and impressive natural sounding speaker that can take an amazing beating before loosing control. A heavy duty amp is a must if you prefer the bass to stay in place at high volumes. Unlike many of the cheaper speaker, the 8.4 seems to be pretty much unbiased toward any sound. I do suspect that wharfedale may have emphazised 75-150 hz range.

Strength:

Good sound. I probably didn't give them enough time to break-in. Bi-wireable (If that's a big deal to you).

Weakness:

Not tall enough (I needed stands). The grill is flimsy (not a big deal to me). Not shielded (A huge deal to me).

(This is for the 8.3's)Well, I read alot about speakers, before purchasing these. They sound good, but I think they need alot of time to break-in. Unfortunately, I have to sell them, because I didn't know that they weren't magnetically shielded. And, because of my space limitations, I can't move them further from the tv.

Strength:

Good looking - powerful - clear - tight bass - very musical (with a good amp) - bi-wireable - excellent support from manufacturer (very nice people)- nice base (plinth reducing the floor vibration) - no fatigue.

Weakness:

Bad original shipping box - bad grill (could be bad if you have kids) - wish they were taller - power hungry (a regular amp or receiver is fine but if you have a power(ful) amp, the sound will change like day and night to the better and worse for the neighbors)

(Wharfedale diamond 8.4) These are not the best speakers - but I love them. I am tired of looking for the best. I stop searching for it when I got the 8.4. It's all about the music isn't it? I went to a chamber concert lately and realized if these people from stereophile, TAS (The Absolute Sound-->good zine btw) and others go to live concert as well to dare analyzing about sound attributes. At the concert, the piano sounded dull sometimes. Well, that how it sounds I guess. And I have no problem with that. I own the 8.1 as well... like them because my ladyfriend bought them for me. But I am most impressed with the 8.4. My room is small so these spikes (plinth) are very helpful to reduce the distrbution of the vibration on the floor. This helps to reduce fatigue as well. Furthermore, the sound coming out is not fatiguing at all. Believe it! Well, I own a couple of pairs of speakers but don't want to own more than a dozen. So I do care about the look as well. I am somewhat proud of the 8.4 because it does look good but also have a classic design that gives them class and lives through time. Again, I am not saying the diamond 8.4 are the best. All I am saying is they are excellent to me. My music: Contemporary Music/ Classical of the 20th century: - Steve Reich - Arvo Part - Henryk Gorecki - Wim Mertens Drum and Bass: - Dormeister $ Kruger - 3AM ... - Prodigy - Massive Attack - Dead Can Dance Some Classical Pop Dance Techno 80's etc,... Best films (and sountrack): The Thin Red Line - 2001 Space Odyssey... I hope you find the right speakers for you. The 8.4 is an example of good sound at a low price. Hey!!! Enjoy the music.

Strength:

Sound clarity, bi-wirable, balanced low, mids and highs, sturdy cabinet.

Weakness:

Same as almost everybody complains, the grill is weak. I never attempt to remove mine.

I'm just new to this home theater setup and deciding what speaker to choose is very confusing. In order for me to start it right, I made the criteria in order to assist me in my evaluation. These are: sound quality—40%, number of drivers—20%, price—20%, speaker reputation—10%, etc, and to come up with lowest cost per driver. After hearing several auditions from different stores on different speakers, I finally made up my mind (based on my calculations) to trim down my selection to JBL 2004 lx series and the bose 601, since I prefer big floorstanding speakers. At the time that, I was about to buy the Bose 601 at Circuit City, the diamond 8.4 has caught my attention when another guy was requesting for an audition. The quality of the sound was excellent. It sounded very smooth and balanced and the quality is superior compared to the 601’s. After almost 2 months now since I bought these speakers, I am really amazed of the sound seem further improved (especially with music) everytime I turned them on. Moreso, when I bi-wired them. Today, I am really convinced that I have chosen the best speakers at the low price. This prompted me to write Wharfedale UK for having built those outstanding speakers.

Strength:

Clarity, Tight Bass Response, Accuracy, Incredible value.

Weakness:

Fragile grill covers won't stand up to being removed and replaced too many time.

After a great deal of research, I settled on the 8.4's for the front speakers in my home theater system. I also purchased 8.2's for the rear, the Surrounds for the sides, along with the Diamond Center Channel and Subwoofer. Whether it's home theater or music, the sound from these speakers is spectacular. They are clean, clear, and honest. There is no coloration or muddiness. With the right piece of music at a high volume they will literally take your breath away.

Strength:

good quality from speakers costing considerably less then other with similar sound

Weakness:

Just the grilles look like an old stocking drawing pinned to the front

Listened to various other speakers first then the Wharfdales, I was quite tempted by the Mission M74i but compared to the wharfdale they sounded like a poor relation, for the same money its wharfdales now gracing the lounge. very impressed with many music modes. quite easily to upset the neighbours as well as the mrs.

Strength:

Bass, treble, clarity, detail, depth, musicality, style, quality, price.

Weakness:

Grille is a little flimsy but leave it on. If it resonates then dampen it or leave it off. Manual very basic but what is needed really?

Great speaker. I Put these in place of my B&W 601 S2 units and couldn't believe the difference in sound! Clarity, detail, depth, and musicality. On diffent tracks there were times which surprised me when I noticed instruments never before heard. Of course the rest of the system plays a big part - (VDH Interconnect, QED BI-Wire cable and NAD amp/cd player. On the topic of Amplifier power, I am running these from a 50W NAD amp which provide excellent drive (high current delivery) so don't be put off by negative comments in relation to power by any means. However, these are absolutely superb and should attract nothing less than 5 stars in my opinion, especially for me as they cost £120 less (sterling) than RRP.

Strength:

Sound very well both at low and at High power. Strong Bass, acousic colored mid,s. Look Beautifull. Only KEF 3 times as expensive did sound better out of 20 sets of speakers.

Weakness:

Don't put them to close to the wall, inspite of the front-port, Do need a powerfull amp. like the NAD917+NAD2200PE

Looking for nice boxes for the NAD 2200PE, I'vo found these great speakers. First I was convinced by the product review in What's Hifi Magazine, Second I've listened them as demo in Staffhorst - Utrecht (polite people), Third I am impressed by the great sound. Price paid euro 300 a pair.
