Strength:

accuracy, stage, vocal

Weakness:

resolution in high range.

i like 2 2 more then 2.3 not because their similer shape^^
but because 2 2 plays music well then 2.3.
2 2 is more smooth and has a little bit lower resolution comparing with 2.3.
but that does not help serious listening.
moreover, harm to appreciate old recordings.
there's so many s.p that can play music wonderful
by good source component and high quality amplifier.
i think 1000$ speaker plays 10000$ music in the best system.
if you have an "i like this component best but loud speaker"
thiel 2 2 will help you.
and if you want to upgrade the high range resoluthon,
change the original cheap resistor in the network to mills or dale or noth creek alike.

p.s...
remember "more deep(base) requires more big(amplifier)" ^^;
2 2 is very sexy.

good luck^^

Brand new, these speakers cost me 3 grand including tax. Now they are only available used as they have been discontinued and replaced by the 2.3s. Occasionally I reflect on how much money I spent and begin to wonder if any entertainment product is worth that much money. Then I turn on my stereo and I am always re-convinced that these speakers were worth every penny. Now after years of listening to these speakers, they can still amaze me. If you're thinking of buying speakers, I think a used pair would be a real bargin.

Having used the 22 for just on year now (my fourth pair of speakers in 3 years), and I am consistently amazed at how good these speakers sound. I have discovered that the Thiel work well with MIT cables but not so well with others, especially pure-silver cables. After playing with so many speakers (cheaper and more expensive than the 22), they have yet to disappoint me in my current setup.
One point to note is, it takes a bit of effort positioning these to get the best sound but once set are extremely rewarding provided you feed it with adequate power. Every time I go and audition other speakers and thinking to myself how much better they sound, the minute I come home and switch on my system, I'm reassured about my choice. A definite 5 on my scale.

I couldn't agree more with you guys more about Thiel cs22. It is very revealing. It show the diferences between cables, cd-players. Before I bought it, I shop around trying to make sure I make the right choice. I have try out B&W matrix 802, VR3, Snell C, Paradigm Studio 100, Vandersteen 3A and etc. It sound the best to my ear.
However, recently I have found out something better and cheaper ---- Hales R3. It is smoother and a little strong in the bass area. But it might due to better upstream components use by dealer(Wadia 850, and classe 300).

The Thiel 2 2 is a real performer, like every reviewer raves about. This speaker will dissapear with proper placement. Excellent high, mid, and bass with excellent wood art, they are mirror matched on each pair. Definition is very good, and that makes the 2 2 unforgiving to front end fault. Use the best quality cd player, amp, pre amp and cable and you will be paid off on the performance. I myself use a lot of amp and pre amp before and I much prefer tube gears because 2 2 has a little aggresive mid and high, tube gears will neutralize this problem a bit. Tube amp should be at least 70W, that almost rule out all the single-ended amp. But Conrad Johnson, Sonic Frontiers and Audio Research are good choices. The only thing I don't like is the bottom location of the speaker connector, make cable changing a pain in the ass. Other than that, very satisfy and impressed with the 2 2.

Great speaker that has been replaced by the new 2.3 model. Like other Thiel models, it is particular about the electronics you use with them. I am using Classe Audio for amp & preamp with Nordost Blue Heaven speaker cables and Audioquest interconnects. I am very pleased with this combination. To me, no other speaker line does all the right things like Thiel. I know many people don't like them, but I attribute that to listening to them with the wrong associated pieces. I can also recommend McIntosh as a good fit. The vocals, dynamics and imaging from the Thiel are all first rate. The CS 2 2 is now a great bargain since it has been discontinued. It is easy to find a pair in excellent condition now for as little as $1500.00

Thiel 22 is the third speaker in may system.First is BW P6, teh Snell D. I was disappointed with those speakers' unclear sound and got tired with relatively warm sound, which sometimes makes me boring. Finally I got Thiel 22 in the last week. I really like it. It has pin point imaging, claer soung stage, showing details in every kinds music. Epsecially, comparing with Snell, Thiel 22 is really wonderful in strings. I have McCormack .5 and TLC 1, with Musical fidelity E601. Tweaks are Kimber and Goertz MI 2. I straongly recommend this system for the lover of clrea image.

Strength:

Ability to reproduce what is actually being played. Coherent throughout the audible range. Seemless!!!

Weakness:

Perhaps short on bass response compared to some I've heared.

After listening to the CS1.2s for over a year, I decided to go further in debt and look for the 2.2s. I was very pleased with the way Thiels sound, very accurate, great imaging, up in your face. I was almost sold on the Soliloquy 5.3 when I decided not to go into debt $1000. plus the loss of the 1.2s to boot.
Well, I found some Thiel 2.2 on the net for $999. I thought there is got to be a catch somewhere. There was, the Doctor lived in upstate Washington and would not ship them without boxes, he did not have any. So, $160 for Thiel boxes shipped, and $119 shipping to Dallas.
Results, I was blown away at the differences between the two Thiels by comparison. First, a more extended range from the 2.2, bass seemed to go down as much as the advertized SOL. 5.3s(32hz), if not more, but what really made a big diffence was the extension in mid to mid-low, sax notes were as flawless as I've ever experienced on anyones solid state rig. Imagiing is quite realistic and palpability of the voices and wind instruments are mind boggling.
It seemed as though the Thiel 1.2s had more front to back spatial dimension, but I'm the first to admit these 72 lbs. giants might be too large for my small apt. living room.
I'm not parting with them, no way!!!!!

Strength:

Excellent mid range, voice. Good mid-bass. Reveals the
weakness in other equipment in your set-up

Weakness:

Not much detail in the high frequency range and low bass.
Need to find the right interconnect and speaker cables.

I am a novice Audio enthusiast and a friend recommended
the Thiel CS 2.2 to me. The speakers were nearly ten years
old (so I am told). What would I get from a ten year old pair of speakers I thought. Well after listening to some
other speakers like the B&W 802 and the Thiel CS 7.2, I was
convinced that I have a bargain pair of speakers to start with. The speakers really reveals the recordings of CDs
good or bad. Placements of the speakers were critical, and it really needs high powered amps to drive it and good
interconnects and speaker cables to bring out the full potential of the speakers. After going around listening to
other speakers in the price range of the CS 2.2, I am convinced it is a bargain at US1200 (even for a ten year pair of speakers).
My set-up:
PS Audio Lambda CD transport
PS Audio Reference Link UltraAnalogue DAC
Krell KAV 250p Pre-amp
Mark Levinson 332
NBS Signature speaker cables
Cardas Golden Cross interconnects.
