When I read about this speaker in Home Theater Magazine and observed how well it performed I knew I had to go in for a listen. Several hours later I found myself walking out of the store with two new speakers. After breaking them in for a while and experimenting with different wiring options I found that they sound much better when at least bi-wired. The one thing that really stood out about these speakers though is the incredibly low noise floor. After trying several receivers that I had lying around I found that these speakers did now generate a 'hiss' sound even when the amp was turned up more than 3/4 (on a 125W per channel and a 100W channel amp). There was TOTAL silence when no music was playing. I have yet to find ANY other speaker with this property.

I was so happy with my first pair of these that I bought another pair! They produce absolutely no noise (hiss) when the amp is turned up halfway (on a 100W per channel technics amp). These speakers are better than any others in their price range (got mine for $270 canadian tax included @ 2001 Audio/Video). They are actually better than several of the $1000+ speakers (per pair) that I have auditioned. Take a look at the review for theses in the december '98 issue of Home Theater Magazine. I give these a rating of 5 speakers, an incredible value for the price.

Strength:

Just the overall quality of sb-t200, the base is amazing!

Weakness:

Haven't found them yet

This past December, I purchased the Harman/Kardon AVR100 (old reciever, but a good one...plus I got it damn cheap). It took me about a month to then find a good clean sounding tower speaker then put out some good base! The second I hooked up the sb-t200 technics speakers to my avr100 h/k reciever, my mind was just blown away. This past month, I purchased the sb-css150 surround speakers to accompany the sb-t200 and my god... I've been asked to move out of my apartment because of them. I just can't get enough of the sound they deliver!!!

Strength:

Inexpensive, good for the price

These speakers are good for the money, but they take a ton of power and don't sound real great overall. the bi-amping and bi-wiring options are nice and not expected on this inexpensive of a speaker.

I just want to say I just bought a Pair of SB-T200s a they sound great. I was going to spend alot more of speakers but these sounded so nice that I bought them. I went to pay for them without looking at the price and was kicked in the pants buy the price 79.99 a peice on sale I thought the was a error in the price, In that it should have been alot more. So I bought a 2nd pair for the rear then. If you on a tight spending limit then these are for you.

Weakness:

need a heavy base, they're a bit tippy; still power hungry

I've submitted a review of these speakers back in Sept/Oct
and now that I have owned them a while, I thought it is time for another review. My initial impressions of these speakers
didn't change with respect to imaging, sound depth, and detail in the midrange and high end. These speakers still deliver on all these qualities. My view has changed on the
bass response however. I couldn't agree with the previous reviews on the bass response of these speakers being strong
until I heard one classical piece on an lp and a blues piece on a CD. The CD is from Melvin Taylor and the Slack Band, a very well recorded CD. Not only did I hear deep bass, I felt it too and on a carpet covered floor. I then turned my 100 watt/per channel receiver to the 12'0clock position and listened to half the CD. I was listening for possible distortion at that volume level but all I heard (and felt!!!) was clean tight bass. There was no sloppiness, booming or muddied response. The midrange and highs came across smooth and accurate with no distortion whatsoever.
These speakers are so faithful in their response that they highlighted the fact that vinyl sounds much better than CDs.
These speakers are simply amazing at any given price and I have no problems recomending them to anyone.

Strength:

BASS!!! With my Sony STR-DE845 these speakers can easily rattle a few teeth loose. Great for movies with big sound (ie. Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan)

Weakness:

They draw alot of power.... had to crank the amp to get nice volume but the speakers have dual binding posts so I used my amps A outputs into the Highs on the speakers and the amps B outputs into the Lows on the speakers and adjusted the settings on my amp accordingly and they give my JBL N26 rears a run for their money! Almost too boomy though

Once I did the little wire Aout put to the highs and B to the lows they totally kick ass!!! Any movie shakes the house which is exactly what I wanted... I just wish that they were a little clearer for music... I'm a huge jazz fan and Ella is just a little too boomy for my taste but that blame partly goes to my "AMP OF DEATH"

Well, it's tough to *retract* a good review but I have to (review below). After listening to these speakers as they broke in, they sounded worse and worse. I mean BAD! A piano sounds like it's in a box as does every other instrument. The treble is lacking, the bass is good, but a bit boomy. It's the first time I've ever experienced this phenomenon. Maybe it's the aluminum drivers, but they soumded worse every passing day. The drive power I mentioned *IS* serious. A one hundred watt amplifier is NOT enough for these speakers. Well, long story short, they went back. Rating of one (1) speaker!
Bought a pair of Klipsch KSF10.5 instead. See my review of them.

Just replaced my original Technics speakers (3 way w/ 15" woofers, all paper) with the SB-T200s. Wow, what a difference. Just supurb mid-range, great imaging and solid bass. I've added a subwoofer so I want less bass in the main speakers. Let the sw do that! I guess the only "bad" point is the SPL; 86db wheras the old speakers were 92dB. Beleive me there's a big difference to the driving amp! But the main amp is easliy capable of that so there's no problem.
Technics has dramatically improved their speaker packaging. My originals were 1/2" MDF (some places it was 3/8"!). The T200s are 5/8" MDF all around with low diffraction baffle. All in all they get a five (5) speaker recommendation.

Strength:

Price for performance! Solid tight bass producing excellent low end for music listeners and DVD movies. The mid and high end are also great!

Weakness:

Draw on the amp, but considering the inexpensive powerful amps out there today, it's not that much of a weakness!

I was looking to replace my home built bookshelf speakers when I happened to pass by the home electronics section at Sears. Took a listen to them and they sounded great even in a wide open area like they were in (this is a Sears after all). For the price, I figured it was worth a try at home since I know Sears would give me no problems if I decided to return them. Well I never returned them and in fact, just a month ago swung by Sears again to pick up the center channel that matches with them (supposed to have the fronts and centers the same brand I read somewhere) and I can't be more pleased as to how these two towers have sounded and performed. Currently they are feeding off a Technics DX940 and during DVD movie play back many of my friends and family have asked "so wheres the sub woofer at?". My main test was the "heist" scene in Heat (5.1 Dolby Digital) and the bullets flying and explosion sounded amazing. Everything was perfectly clear and I really don't know how it can get much better (I'm sure it can but for what I paid, its more than enough for me personally). I highly recommend these speakers to anyone that's getting into a home theater system or casual music listening and wants to go the budget route. They may be a budget price but I have heard speakers in the homes of my friends that cost 5X's the price and mine sound just as good if not better (and hey they told me the same thing and boy do they go red when they find out how much I paid!).
