Strength:

Trust me! You would never find another Legend again that is truly produced by British 100%! • great quality even up today my rubber edge foams are still in good condition. • vocal is marvelous! It sounds so magically! • not demanding speakers. Go easy with any amp. But I would recommend to use Tube Amp to drive it. You would never regret and you would never want to use solid state transistor amps to drive it no more thereafter. Grab it if you find another good one.

Weakness:

The lowest sponge apparently didn’t last long as it should be. I saw many units without the sponge no more. So i has to DIY another after market sponge to seal up the two holes at the bottom. Hope this helps! Trust me! Agree with other reviewers, nothing to touch these under £1000 certainly at new prices. Those who don't like the bass probably haven't heard real bass before with the more usual designs in this price bracket that cut off in real terms well before these beauties. Having that bass on hand probably to some ears makes mid-range appear less revelatory is all I can think.

The acid test : They simply cut the mustard on hard to reproduce full scale orchestral program. Provided you have the space, now an ebay bargain at around £150. Many speakers can make simple pop or jazz, programme sound pleaasnt. It's ALWAYS interesting that this is what's usually served at hifi shows or indeed on offer in hifis shops if you don't bring your own music along.

Can reproduce 32 foot organ pipe fundamentals, now just WHAT new speaker can do that below £1000?

Sorry, (and I know this can be personal ) but you can keep your similarly priced KEFs, B&Ws, Monitor Audios.
Would I upgrade? Yes, to a TDL Studio series 2nd hand buy or Meridian if I won the lottery :)

I have the early version of the RTL 3 (identified by full length grill covers and 4 straight sides on the base cones). I find them great for most types of music, with good bass extension and weight, even at lowish volume levels. The midrage is fine but the upper treble can be a little bit harsh on some music when theres a lot going on.
To those with "blown tweeters" i ask - are you sure its the tweeters? Mine appeared to be blown when I bought them but it was the crossovers that had burned out- check for warping between the binding posts.
I bought replacement crossovers from Lockwood audio in the UK (who bought all the spares when TDL went bust). They were the later spec xovers and made a big difference to the clarity and focus in the upper mid and treble, making the speaker overall excellent. Well worth the £100-£150 you can buy them for on E-bay.
I would say a good amp with plenty of current delivery is needed to keep the base tight. With cheap amps it can sound a little boomy but no more than any other speaker that delivers bass

Strength:

In my opinion a very musical sounding loudspeaker, not necessarily the most detailed (although certainly not lacking in detail) but the sort that gets your feet tapping and which get you emotinally involved with the music rather than analytically, if you know what I mean... if you don't, try and find a pair and give them a good listen and see if you agree...They also go loud, and with deep bass, so that on more than one occasion they've served as entertainment for packed house parties, getting eveyone up on the dance floor...

I have ownned these from new (since1995!), and remember auditioning a fair few before being blown away by the TDLs. Partnered with a NAD 502 CD player/Rega Planar 3 turntable and the Rotel RB960BX/CX pre-power combination, they've always sounded great, though no doubt they'd dsound even better with higher spec kit.

Weakness:

Unfortunately, while they sound fantastic at high volumes, even when driven with lots of clean power they can't cope with this treatment forever, and at about 2am, they tend to go pop. I should know, it's happened to me about four times now. You'd think I would learn, but the sound is so good, they don't sound strained, but before you know it the crossovers have melted and/or the tweeters have blown, with tell tell-tale signs of an acrid smell and the cable terminals plastic housing clearly melted. Oops. Four times oops. The last time I tried to get them fixed, the repair was less than satisfactory, so I'm looking to change these speakers. But I'm findng myself bidding on another pair on ebay, and promising myself I won't run them at big volumes for more than a short while this time...

My favourite pieces of HiFi kit, alhough sadly I have tended to abuse them a bit. Much loved sound, big controlled bass, very musical, but if you succumb to temptation and play them loud for long the crossovers tend to melt...Highly recommended if you love music, but avoid them from entertaining the party for too long...

Customer Service

Sadly, TDL are now defunct, and it's not all my fault, as I only had my pair repaired under warranty once.

Strength:

Natural sounding speaker, exceptional bass not to overbearing, but their when you need it.

Weakness:

Too bad the company is out of business.

come to think about it, I've owned these speakers for about 5 years now, and I've upgraded gears, but not these speakers. I'm actually running them with Rotel RTC 965, surround processor, and the rotel RB985 MK2, which is a multi channel amp, and recently upgraded to Audioquest Forest, speaker cables. I fell in love all over again with them, and could not believe, that after 5 yrs, they would still impress me. Greater deph, presence, imaging, was detected. It's no mistery that those speakers produce a generous amount of bass, but since the upgrade, the bass seems to be more focus, cleaner, and also a lot more extented. For the past year or so, I've auditioned a lot of speakers, and of course I did hear a lot of good or maybe better speakers, for a lot more money, but going back home and listening to the RTL3, they always seem to bring me a sense of comfort and a smile to my face. In other words they sound damn G O O D!!!!!!

Weakness:

none

bought these speakers fom somebody who didnt have room for them in his flat, i dont have roomfor them either really but i managed to squeeze them in, i bought them a year ago for 75 pounds, i knew it was a real bargain because I have heard TDL made some good speakers, as my mates dad owns some whopping 4ftX2ft TDL''s, these speakers however were bought to replace my Kef Coda 9.2 speakers, i now realise that if I was to sell them to a good enthusiast I could make a hell of a profit, considering they really are in top condition, everything is like new, they have only be used for a total of 2 years and they havent even been played constantly, these truly are very magnificent speakers i reccomend somebody start making these again............
