I bought a refurbished pair of these speakers sometime around 1997 for $100. I used them with a Technics SA-EX510 receiver (120W per channel to the front speakers). These speakers sound nice when playing loud and driven hard. They are very durable, and can take lots of power without dieing. They are great for parties, but at lower volume levels sound quality suffers (base disappears, and the soundstage totally dies).

If was just looking for a pair of speakers to play very loud, impress my friends with shear SPL levels, and totally smash the junk that comes with "home theater in a box" systems I would buy these. On the other hand if I was an audiophile I would not even look at these.

Strength:

durable great high end good power handling

Weakness:

doesn't sound good quiet poor soundstage needs a big room to really appreciate

These are decent workhorse speakers they are rated to handle fair amount of power. If you can find them at the price I picked them up at they are definatley worth it. The tweeter and the midrange speakers appear to be of quality construction and seem durable. The woofer is also of quality construction and looks like it will last for years. The overall sound is useable, they perform nicely when they are well driven by louder music. Listening to quiet passages everything kind of goes downhill and the soundstage dissapears. The bass response is good enough, sometimes it gets a little muddy, I think a smaller 6" woofer might do a better job. The high end is excellent, you can crank up your eq and it won't break up no matter what you do. Overall it's very durable speaker with decent sound. You probably won't hear anything new in your music, or fall in love with your music again, but it will give a good representation of it, and if you like to crank it up the ss-u4033 with handle it. The soundstage is a bit of a problem, these are pretty big speakers and 1-3 feet away sound awful, 3-6 feet away is decent, you almost need to get across the room for these speakers to really gel together. The sounds don't really jump out away from the speakers, on some other speakers you can hear instruments in the far corners of the room or even beyond the room; but the sounds all pretty much seem to be coming from the speakers. All that being said these are perfect party speakers, or

Strength:

Good sound out of a Sony bookshelf speaker.

Weakness:

Not the best frequency response.

Not bad speakers, especially for the price I got them. Like a lot of audio enthusiasts, I sometimes cringe at the name "Sony", but these haven't dissappointed me. I am using them as my rear surrounds in my HT system, and they fill out the sound pretty nicely. However, if you know anything about HT sound, you will know how ludicrous the reviews for these speakers are that say you won't even need a subwoofer. These handle midbass fine, but like most any other bookshelf speaker, you will not get any extended bass response out of them. Don't expect subwoofer sound without a subwoofer (I have a Dahlquist PDQ1500 15" sub, highly recommended). As rear surround speakers they're very good, probably fine as fronts, just don't expect any miracle sound out of older model sony bookshelf speakers.

Strength:

Great sound for the price!

Weakness:

doesnt handle excessive volume very well

I own 6033 and 4033 that i bought in 1995 with my STR-D665 Sony Receiver. The have held up very well over the past few years, and considering that i paid less than 200 bucks for all of them combined i could not be happier. I have plenty of bass (boom!) and with these i dont need a subwoofer (how much bass does one need anyway?). They sound really crisp, clear and defined. Perhaps the mid's could have been improved a little, but overall still good. I know Sony has a bad rep with their quality control problems, but i would highly recommend their speakers. I mean, how the hell can you screw up manufacturing a speaker!?! And the best little thing about them is that they were made in the US. Not a big deal but its nice to see. I had a one year trade up warranty as i though i would upgrade, but now ive had them five years and they sound even better now than ever.

The only weaknesses are that they cant really alot of power. They are rated at 100 watts (peak of course) but anything over about volume 6 and a half (out of 10) on my 100w receiver in the sound is fairly distorted. But at that point your ears are bleeding anyway!! Overall for the price and milage i got from them i would hesitate to buy them in a second.

Strength:

Handles bass extremely well, gives more than what you ask for, power handling great, outputs great sound w/ any system, very durable, nice quality speakers for price, fills any room w/ sound

Weakness:

could say spring clip terminals for anyone else but it's fine for me..... a lil' big for small rooms, put 'em in larger room and I'd really say there's no weakness

Bought these as part as a package with the STR- V200 identical to the other reviewer. Pro- logic package w/ all surround, center, receiver, and mains cost $300. The receiver's bass boost really pushed my speakers and I never had to consider a subwoofer with that. The speakers really made the bass come alive, a lotta punch, and crystal clear sound. Movies and music were never drowned out by the bass either which is a big plus +. I bought them w/ all of my Christmas money I had when I was a freshman in High school, and it was no doubt the best I had ever spent on audio. I now have sold my surround, center, and receiver, but kept the mains (SS- U4033). Upgraded to digital with a DD Pioneer VSX- D509S, bought 3 piece package of surround and center by Sony (success of SS- U4033 guided me to this buy). I can't be any more pleased with how it sounds, very nice. Hoping SS- U4033 to last 2 - 3 more years. Now 'am looking to buy SAWM40 woofer by Sony. Senior in High School now, saved much money but will still be broke in college like most. Great Job Sony, but please work better on receivers, you lost me as customer for those when it came to DD.
