Honestly the only mod I did to these so far is to add rubber isolation feet to the bottom of them. I have been thinking of adding a thin layer of fiber fill to the back wall in the box just because it is thin even by japanese speaker standards. The cones fill really solid and like they will last for years. I have been considering also adding baffles to isolate the tweeters and mids from the rest of the speakers entierly but if you can swing these for a good deal and then just glue on a few cheap rubber speaker feet they sound good enough the highs are prone to some intereference when the big woofer is going hard but I just filter the whole speaker off at about 120hz and let my sub do its thing and then they sound clean and clear.

Will update after poly filling and possiby sealing the whole box

Awesome speakers for home theatre use. Incredible sound and nice bass response. I have it connected to a 200 watt Sony Amp and this thing kills. Not bad for some low cost speakers. Very highly impressed.

Strength:

in their factory form not many maybe price and loud if muddy bass. after modifying them however everything. these things sound amazing. lows, mids, highs everything. they are now much louder and clearer and cleaner just wonderful.

Weakness:

in factory form alot. very muddy sound. cheap construction. cheap materials. midrange seems to not play ever. takes a lot of power to drive very inefficient. size is neither bookshelf or floorstanding as others have stated in previous reviews.

Have had these for several years unsure of product year. I was real excited to get 3 sets of these speakers at $50/pr mostly because of their size. when I tried them at home I was pretty disappointed however. I read the reviews here about crossover modifications and tried them out but if anything I think it made the speakers worse. I might have a later model that fixed some of the crossover issues. recently I took out the drivers and lined all walls with polyfill and then used non-hardening rope caulk to make an airtight seal under each driver for the tweeter mid and woofer. your going to need some polyfill available at places like Michael's or Walmart pretty cheap. some aerosol glue (careful to use a well ventilated area and avoiding breathing the fumes.) the non hardening rope caulk is available at hardware stores such as Home Depot and found in the weather stripping department. and of course a screwdriver and some free time. This really doesn't take to much time or effort to do and damn what a difference. the only lining that the cheap particle board cabinet has before adding polyfill is a small thin sheet behind the woofer. after adding polyfill on all walls there isn't much free airspace left and using the rope caulk to make airtight seals seriously tightens these speakers up. it totally clears up the muddiness inherent in this model and seems to have seriously increased their efficiency as well. it used to take a lot of power to drive these and now they are loud at very low power levels. I would say that these speakers are about twice as loud after modifying them and they sound great. for about maybe $20 investment and some time you can add easily a $100 value to these speakers. the difference really blew me away. I would suggest to anyone who owns these speakers to make the modifications that I made it is definetly worth it. Be very careful screwing the drivers back in as you can easily tear out the threads in the cheap particle board cabinet. my ratings are based on the speakers after the modifications I made. If you aren't going to modify these speakers I would not suggest buying them.

Strength:

Good price for amount of speaker

Weakness:

Lacks clarity of treble

Bought a pair of these for home studio. For the price that I paid for these, they really are a good bargain. I am sorry to say that the dome tweeter needs to be more crisp and less flat. Acoustic suspension cabinet coupled with 8" woofer does an OK job at bass, but I think Sony could make this speaker a bit more efficient and a little bit more "bassy" by adding a rear-firing port tuned to around 50Hz. Midrange reponse and presence is great for this price line and general frequency response is outstanding. Highly recommended for those with a budget in mind.

Strength:

price, great freq. response

Weakness:

come with crappy cable

For the $100 I paid for this pair, you can not get better speakers. They produce great sound on all ends of the spectrum. The only problem was the awful speaker wire that was included, I promptly replaced it with Monster cable and it sounds great. I would reccomend these for anyone who is looking to get a decent set of front speakers for their new home theatre, I have these hooked up to a great Sony receiver that I got on clearance at J&R.

I replaced a pair of Yamaha bookshelfs for for these Sony's. For the same price, they are much better. They provide more bass, better highs, and an overall sound qualtiy that can be appreciated by anyone. I encourage people that are looking at purchasing bookshelfs to get these. Another great product from Sony.

Strength:

Great Price

Weakness:

Weak tweeter performance. Woofer Ok, but depends what amp being used. Light cabinet.

I found this speaker to be weak in the tweeter area. Sounds like it's being cut off ?? Woofer seems to sound fine, but depends what amp you are driving it with. It sounds weak to me for a 8 inch . Overall, it's OK for the money. But I might try the tweeter crossover capacitor change (as listed elsewhere on this page) to see if this helps ?? It's a major drawback to the product for me.

But if all you can spend is about $ 100.00 pair, this is the best I have found. All the others in this price range that I tried were worse. If the capacitor change really helps, this could be a real winner (overall rating would go up as well) ??

I had a sony mini system and i wanted to get speakers with better sound for it.The ss-mb215 sounded awesome as compared to other speakers in their price range. They were really inexpensive($93.84 at best buys). So i bought them. When i brought them home i was amazed at how good they sounded, they blew away the speakers that came with the system. If your looking for a cheap but very powerful awesome speaker the ss-mb215 is what you should get.
