Picked these little gems up for $38 at Best Buy.I intend to use them as my rear surounds once I have my Home Theatre up and running.Right now I have them hooked up to my Rotel BX935 amp alongside my Rogers LS2a speakers. The Sony`s dont sound out of place and I`m sure there going to do a great job when used as my rears.Anyone looking to buy a lot for a little cash cant go wrong.

Strength:

Good surround sound separation in DD/DTS

Weakness:

Maybe a little "hollow" sounding, but maybe I just need to tweak them a bit more...

These little speakers are very nice. I got them, when I bought my STR-DE845, they came free with the reciever. For that price and that they can handle the power output of said reciever, you can't beat it.

Very recommended.

Strength:

Great Sound

Weakness:

Not much Bass

I have to say that I was blown away by these little speakers. I bought an open box pair at Best Buy for $36 to use as surrounds in my home theater. I hooked them up to my PC as a temporary solution until I could get my Mission speakers sent from my old home. After listening to music through them though, I ended up ordering another pair just to use as computer speakers. (I have a reciever hooked up to my PC powering these)

Weakness:

At a power of 50 watts, with bass at MAX, they pop a little. No worry. SUB TIME!

#1 speaker: Yamaha ns-a638
#2 speaker: RCA (Radio Shack) sts-60
#3 speaker: Sony's unimpressive ss-MB105

The Top brand was Definetly Yamaha, but the Sony, Im sorry to say, came in last place in our "Speak peak" test at Circuit city. We were surprised that the Sony against Radio Shack's New RCA 100 watt Max. lost the comptetiton. The RCA definetly plays louder and has a crossover. RCA is doing fairy well in their new lineup of speakers at Radioshack. If your looking for above average quality at a lower price, visit Radioshack. Anyway, Sony won in the "Quality test". Its rigid woofer was stood on and still played like a man. While Yamaha's 8" paper woofer barely lasted, RCA's 6 1/2" woofer died out. Test 2: Distortion. Yamaha did best in this test and RCA came last. All speakers were played at their MAX rating. Test 3: Voice coil. Well of course, Yamaha's acoustic suspension won this round, and Sony came in last. Last test: Best place in home theater. Yamaha is best used for Front Cahnnels. Sony could dual the woofer and make it a center. The RCA's are also good at Front.
Specs:
Yamaha: 70 watts RMS 140 Max. 8" woofer, 3-way design.
Sony: 50 watts RMS 100 Max. 5" woofer, 2-way bass reflex.
Rca: 50 watts RMS 100 Max. 6 1/2" woofer 2-way bass reflex.

OUR WINNER: YAMAHA!!!!!! GO YAMAHA. OUR Little looser, sony. BUT Quite imprssive, for its a sizer ya know!

Strength:

small size, high wattage, video sheilded, frequency response

Weakness:

none

seems as though word's been getting around about these speakers--had to call around to three different circuit cities to find one that had them in stock. these things are great! for the size, they can really pump out some sound. even the bass response is amazingly good.

great for a small basic audio set up in a second room or for home theater.

Strength:

Amazing bass for the size and price, overall sound respectable for a cheap speaker

Weakness:

Lacks mid range definition, highs aren't exactly crystal clear but hey, it's only $29 bucks each.

Comparing all three was a mixed bag. The Cerwin Vega's definitely had the richer bass of the three but lacked mid range definition (it was only a 2 way speaker). The Sony 105's produced surprisingly good bass for their small size, although no where near as good as the CV's. Just like the CV's the mid range seemed to be missing. The KLH 900's had the mid range (it is a 3way speaker). The bass wasn't quite as distinct. The highs were definitely "high" but seemed on the harsh side at times.

The CV's where $89/each, KLH 900 $49/each, and the Sony 105's $29/each. The KLH's where on the larger side of all three speakers with a longer depth as well. The Sony's seemed to fit what I was looking for although still lacking in some sound definition. I was looking for a cheap pair of bookshelf speakers to go along with second stereo system, and eventually be part of surround system, which I think they will work great for. I wouldn't hesitate to wall or ceiling mount the Sony's. The KLH's would be a little on the larger side for where I want to mount them.

None of the three seemed to touch my small floor standing Kenwood's I bought 15 years ago at $49/each. The CV's did have a richer bass but the overall package was still lacking for the price.

Strength:

Great sound, durable speakers, good cabnet construction, very Efficient, and can't beat the price for what you get.

Weakness:

What weaknesses??

I first bought these MB-105's and absolutly love them. I am always looking for good deals and couldn't pass these up. I bought the rest rest of the series to match up the 105's and the whole series sound very nice. I also cant get over just how Efficient these speakers are. They get loud with very little power. When you do turn these puppies up they out perform speakers $100's more. As far as bass they may lack a bit, butt if usen for surround you dont want alot of bass running through them anyway. Great all around speakers, they are a nice main channel speaker, and I found to be a great rear channel.

Strength:

Small size, neoprene roll suspension (rather than foam which deteriorates), great highs

Weakness:

Even if I paid double, I could not fault these speakers.

The reason I wrote this review was simple. I do some audio repair (mostly vintage equipment) in my home. I needed a set of small monitor type speakers that I could leave in place above my test bench for testing recievers and other equipment. While looking for some old vinyl (albums) at the local reord store,I picked these up for $25.00 for the pair. They were in great shape, and had the original paperwork. I took them home and immediately connected them to an old Kenwood 65 watt RMS receiver and they sounded great. I then connected an old Technics 30 watt RMS receiver and added a CD player I was cleaning and repairing. I put on an instrumental string CD and could not believe the quality of sound these reproduced, even at relatively high volume levels.
Now I have about 4 pure stereo audio systems in different locations in my home. They range from 60 watts RMS thru 200 watts RMS. My home theater has Carver AL III's (driven by a 500 watt RMS amp)with a Sunfire Signature sub (you know what this packs!), I am used to what a good sound combination should be.
If some one does not like the sound of these little marvels, I might suggest some items that will help you.

1. Check the phasing of your connections.

2. Check the output of your amp, it may be clipping.

3. Check your ears, frequent exposure to high volume levels through clipped output will surely produce transient sounds that may damage your hearing.

4. A quality speaker will reproduce what it hears (GIGO theory), time to move up from that Soundesign unit that Mom and Dad gave you went to prep school!

5. Reality slap required - Set your sights a little lower, you didn't pay $2,000.00 bucks a pair for these.

I love them! I got my whole system for about 850.00. Denon reciever, sony dvd,klh 10' sub and sony surround. I turn on my tone defeat option and cystal clear sound. Use a sub with these and set your speakers for small and they sound great. I have yet to hear distortion out of them. Grant it you can spend 1000 bucks on speakers and they will sound better but for the price they do the job for me. (The neighbors are Yelling) If you know what i mean!!!

Strength:

Price/quality ratio; port on front baffle allows greater variety of placements

Weakness:

Cabinet could be thicker; larger than KLH 911B; won't reproduce deep bass at this size

These were originally in Sony's home-theatre-in-a-box sets, but we're starting to see them being sold on their own. Best Buy also sells them.

Yet another good (but small) speaker for very little money. My vote for the most speaker for the money still goes to Sony's MB-215 at $40 each, but the 105s have the high-density polyolefin woofer cones and a decent front-ported enclosure that lets you back the speaker right up against a wall, unlike the KLH 911B. Decent power handling, good tweeter, easy to move around for best sound... a good deal. Can you have too many good&small&cheap speakers in the house? Or in your car/van?

The best thing about cheap&good speakers is that you can take them apart and tweak them without worry. Ported speakers are the most tweakable, so for the confirmed tweakist, these are ideal. Also good for the fledgling audio nut just starting out on a tight budget.
