PSB Speakers Stratus Bronze Floorstanding Speakers

PSB Speakers Stratus Bronze Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

The Bronze uses the same one-inch aluminum-dome tweeter used in the Stratus Gold and Silver systems. It also uses a new pair of 6-1/2-inch woofers with felted cones and rubber surrounds. These two drivers operate in a "two-and-a-half-way" design that uses both of them for low frequencies and only one for mid-frequencies.

Strength:

Overall sound, imaging

Weakness:

The feet that came with them are not as adjustable as I would like; when you take the grills off, the mounting pegs stick out

These are really a great compromise in price and performance. I found these demonstrators for $1000 cdn and they have been incredible.

The imaging is fantastic and the sound is complete. Bass heavy music (like Bela Fleck's Flight of the Cosmic Hippo) is great with the low notes rolling along the floor like a thick fog (especially synth bass). The mids are not nasal but well balanced. Vocals and instruments are all very well represented. The highs are present and clear without being intrusive. My friend has Paradigm Monitor 5s which are brighter than these, but lacking in overall bass response. The Monitor 5s also seem to emphasize the lower mids more. The Stratus Bronzes are just really great overall.

I have these hooked up to a Yamaha RX-V596, and although I don't have the full 5.1 setup yet (it's coming), these Bronzes do a great job of playing the soundtracks and the effects from DVDs.

I listen to a lot of different styles of music and this speaker has no problems handling them all. From deep 5-string bass riffs, rock, jazz, classical and movies, this speaker will just amaze you. You can listen to them for hours (as I do) and you won't be fatigued at all.

They have been called "laid back", but I think that is due to the fact that the sound is so smooth right across the spectrum. Everything is really well balanced.

My only complaint would have to do with the plastic feet that come standard: they are not adjustable. They adapt well to non-carpeted floors, but you may have to do some shimmying to keep them stable. Definately looking at PSBs for the rest of my 5.1 setup.

Strength:

Incredible Performance At A Most Reasonable Price!!

Weakness:

Given Their Price Range - None

I purchased these incredible speakers(Stratus Bronze) approximately 3 weeks ago to expand my current sound system.I also own a pair of PSB Goldi's which I purchased last year.
In my opinion, you will not find better speakers in their price range. These speakers also outperform other much more expensive speakers.
Although, the finish on these speakers is not quite as nice as the finish on the Goldi's, the cherry vinyl laminate is still quite appealing. These speakers certainly match up well both musically and aesthetically with the Goldi's.
I have been extremely pleased and impressed with the performance and appearance of these speakers. Their price range of $9OO.OO to $1300.00 make them a truly incredible buy!!! If these speakers fall within your budget, I would highly recommend that you audition them.

These speakers have a smooth as silk sound that is well-balanced throughout their frequency range. They seem equally at ease playing any music, from Amadeus Wolfgang Mozart to ZZ Top. This is a very musical speaker with excellent soundstaging. Individual instuments are distinct and hold their position in a large ochestra. Listening is easy and unstrained at either high or low volumes.
If you decide to audition these speakers, whether or not you are a classical music lover, I would strongly suggest you listen to Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman sing "Time to Say Goodbye" (from his "Romanza" CD or her CD titled "Time to Say Goodbye"). This song shows off most of the Bronze' capabilities in spectacular fashion.

The retail price for PSB Stratus Bronze with the high gloss piano black finish is $1299. Even more reason why I believe this was the best $800 I'll ever expect to spend on HT / Stereo gear.

A solid and resounding:

The psb Bronzes are perfect for all around speaker, will work well as mains and rears(floor standing). I like the sound of the Bronze, no coloration, not bright, just nice sounding. I bought this speaker after a long, slow search for the right product. I owned some Century series PSBs, and didn't need to hurry them into the bedroom. I tried a lot of brands in the $1K-$3K range and liked most of what I heard. I bought the Bronze simply because they look good in room (with their slim, rectangular cabinets and rounded corners), have a smooth and natural midrange and well-integrated sound, and add plenty of weight and impact to make music sound full.
The fun part about the PSBs is that their sound is so right and convincing and their price is so fair, that they're easy to buy without racking one's nerves.
I think the Century series is great, and the Stratus series is very good (Maybe the Gold is great, but where do you put it?). If that sounds backwards, its because the Century series accomplishes so much for so little that it would be easy to argue for Century speakers and better electronics if you're working to a price.

As for the Bronze, my only criticisms are that they don't have quite the 'stage and depth as some others under $3K (they don't really "disappear" like a few top minispeakers and sculpted-baffle designs), and the bass from the ported cabinets doesn't have all the snap and speed of some other designs. Still, they have a very realistic and free-breathing, rythmic sound which doesn't get old. You could probably get more resolution from some others, but be careful...they might
make you tired. These speakers play the music, and they look good.

Also, thanks to everybody for the reviews on this site. They're a big help.

From the minute i took it out of the box a strange odour was always evident. Didn't like the black ash finish. it collected to much dust. So as i was saying before ya...it smelled like tuna.

I have listened to numerous speakers over the past few years and owned only a few pairs over the last twenty years. I love music and have tried to maintain a modest system...really can't afford to spend too much. I recently owned a pair of B&W P-5's that I had for 4 years and loved them. Have had the Stratus Bronze for a couple months and really love the way they sound. They are not outstanding nor do they really fall short in any area...they are just great all around full range speakers that disappear and let the music come out. They also look great and don't overpower a room. They sound great with all types of music, especially classic rock. However, I do like the sound of the P-5's when it comes to vocals and prefer them over the Stratus Bronze. But, for $800 I am not sure they can be beat. I would give them five stars in the price range of $700 to $1200 (maybe up to $1800).

To the previous reviewer. It seems unfair to issue such a harsh review when you only demoed and have not owned and lived with them. The rules are that you have to have used the product.
I really love the psb stratus bronzes. They play classic, jazz, and contemporary music well and seem neutral and uncolored. The highs are crisp and airy and they have a surprising amount of bass that seems very tight.I use them for two channel listening and do not need a sub. They handle complex symphonies with a good soundstage. They also handle the bass and guitar of "Hotel California", and the bass instrument and mid vocals of Diana Krall, and the the highs of piano solos and soprano voice of Sara Brightman with equal ease.
They are driven with Adcom separates(15 years old), and I couldn't be more pleased. I'm sure there is better sound out there, but at what price?
