PSB Speakers Stratus Bronze Floorstanding Speakers

PSB Speakers Stratus Bronze Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

The Bronze uses the same one-inch aluminum-dome tweeter used in the Stratus Gold and Silver systems. It also uses a new pair of 6-1/2-inch woofers with felted cones and rubber surrounds. These two drivers operate in a "two-and-a-half-way" design that uses both of them for low frequencies and only one for mid-frequencies.

Strength:

flat response, highs and mids, looks great in dark cherry. Nice build

Weakness:

boomy bass

I'm using nak av-8 to drive these. I thought with the speakers rated at 4 ohm, my receiver wud have problems driving it, but no. Its remained as cool as ever.
The sound is very refined, and smooth. There is no harshness whatsoever. And now i can listen to my CDs for a much longer time...
On the flip side, i found the bass to be boomy and a little over bearing. I tried iron maiden's brave new world and metallica's master of puppets. On both they were boomy and little muddy. I dunno if it is because of not being broken in or the way i've placed them or that i've not biwired these. Any information on how to tighten the bass will be very much appreciated. I don't listen to much bass heavy music, so i can live with it for a while.
Can anyone out there with similar set up, advice me on the kind of cables to use and ways to configure for optimum sound?

Thanks.

Strength:

Same high quality Vifa tweeter as the Gold's
Unbelievable price/value ratio

Weakness:

At the price, none...

Where to begin? At price I can think of none better. I truly feel as though I get almost as much satisfaction out of these as I did with my Thiel's. Obviously, this is a personal, subjective feeling so don't get too bent out of shape if you own 1.5's Sometimes I do wonder if people take this site too seriously? I mean just because Rob or whatever his name is did not find them to his liking, no need to get worked up, it is an opinion. What is frustrating is when people state things that are outright wrong i.e (contstruction of a $2000 amp differs from some guys Technics reciever) I use these in a secondary primarialy HT system with ML's in the other. I am also using the Stratus C5 and Mini's all to good effect. I think the gloss finish is swell and I do Love them.
However, I did find the Image 5T's to be way bright but you gotta figure it is the same tweeter as used in the 1B or whatever the cheapest Image mobel is called. It's kinda like having the cheapest Mercedes or the most expensive Honda in that you get most of the attributes of the much more expensive Silver and Gold's instead of having the most tricked out Image which differs only in woofer and enclosure size being that it is a truly modular design.

Good full range floor standers.

These are an upgrade from my old Celestion 5's with sub. I'm not much of a "techie" type audiophile and specs don't mean a lot to me but what I do have is a good ear. I am a musician, I play and record and really enjoy music of all types and these speakers definately deliver whatever you play through them. If you're a rock fan you'll love 'em. Soft female voices; no problem. I'm using Rotel amplifier and CD player through Audiquest cables and this system sounds great for not a lot of money. These are Stereophile magazine "Recomended Products" by the way whose opinion I respect because they routinely audition $20,000 speakers! PSB's are Canadian made where the government has actually helped the audio industry financialy so they could be more competitive.
I'm planning on building a home theatre around them soon. If you're looking for great speakers the Stratus Bronze will not dissapoint you.

Strength:

excellent high, mid, and low range..temendous bass!

Weakness:

None I can think of.

Picked these up at a steal, 400 for the pair, only 8 months old. Used with a Sony st-975 110 watts x5, with Bose 161 rears and an Infinity Center 150 W. Hooking these up was a great experience! The sound is clear and crisp, with bass that just booms. The instruments and voice are so crisp on cd, and they are so deep in bass I don't hardly even need a subwoofer in surround sound, they shake the piano upstairs by themselves! Had I paid 3 times what I paid for these, I would have been happy. You cannot go wrong at all for this efficient sound!

Strength:

Smooth Sound. Nice soundstage & imaging. Accurate. Versatile.

Weakness:

The supplied plastic feet are not upto the quality of the speaker itself - but they also come with spikes.

I purchased the Bronze's without ever hearing them (rolling the dice - I know), but am happy I did. I sampled the above speakers either in a showroom or at a friend's before making my purchase. The 603's were nice, but they were the 1st version w/ the passive woofer, and I found them a little muddy. I found the 7's & C-4's actually quite close - it really came down to which CD I was playing in a side by side comparision to which I liked better. Neither speaker "spoke" to me, but they opened up considerably after switching from a decent receiver to a nice integrated amp in the shop. This alone convinced me to power what ever I got w/ separates.

The Hales were my personal favorite, but outside of my budget. These were sampled at a higher end dealer with phat cables (not sure of brands), nice warm tube amp, and a rega planet cd player. Warm, clear, accurate, with great soundstage and good authority, I could have listened for hours (I'm an enthusiast - not a 'phile so terms may not be standard - just my impression). These really impressed me, and, had the shop been serving cocktails, I probably would have gone home with them. They are not particularly attractive (IMO), but the sound is sweet. Fortunately for my marriage, prudence brought me home alone.

After a lot of reading and learning, I came to know more about PSB & the Bronzes. Everything seemed to fit my criteria, and I just went with them. I had already blown my original budget out of the water sourcing separates, and I was getting into the danger zone in spending too much in speakers. I liked Kevin at Upscale, and he set me up with a good price for a set of "B" stock cherry vinyl finish Bronzes. I was nervous they would look "cheap", and that what ever the flaw that made them 2nds would have me regretting my decision.

Out of the box, I was actually very pleased with their asthetics. IMO, they are more attractive than the Rev 2. Had I not been told they were "2nds", I doubt I would have known. The finish, while not wood, is actually much better than anticipated (I doubt most visitors even consider they are not a wood finish, and my cleaning lady waxes them just like the rest of the wood funiture). They will be easily cleaned up if my 2 yr old gets loose with a box of crayons as well. My only complaint is the adhesive back rubber on the plastic feet. I think it would be relatively easy for PSB to figure out a better solution as this is the one thing that doesn't fit the look & feel of the speaker. They also come with spikes though.

I've got them connected to a Rotel RB-985 100 watt amp using AudioQuest Type 4+ bi-wired. In a nutshell, this set-up has me smiling everytime I play it. I really enjoy the sound from the Bronzes, and, for me, they make that audible connection we all look for in a system that gives me a thrill when listening. It's warm, but not too laid back or muddy. The highs are sweet without getting shrill - even when playing Ave Maria.

The soundstaging (something I like) is impressive, as is the imaging, and short of listening to them in the same room as the Hales, I would say they are comparible in this respect. There are parts of Pink Floyd's The Wall where you can almost see the rooms as he moves around. Another good listen is Cowboy Junkies - Trinity Sessions. It was recorded with a single mic (I believe) in a small church, and the Bronzes bring alive the acoustics. I actually found the sound to be quite close to the enjoyment I got from the Hales set-up I demo'ed. Factor in the $ I didn't spend, and I am much happier with them. The Bronze has a little less authority (read bass) than the Hales, and perhaps a touch less clarity, but all in all, I couldn't be happier with them. Sometimes, when you roll the dice, you come up winning.

I've since purchased PSB mini's for my kitchen and mites for my office.

Crystal clear highs, natural mid range, awesome piano gloss finish.

PSB Stratus Bronze has the best value / performance for the money. I spent several months looking at and listening to B&W 600 series, Paradigm reference studio 40's and 60's, Energy, and Mission. They all seemed to lack something, or over compensate in some way. The PSB's sounded smooth, open, with excellent detail and tight bass. This is an easy to drive (high sensitivity) speaker that competes with products costing twice as much. For those of us with realistic budget considerations, PSB Stratus Bronze deserves a strong review.

Strength:

They sound and look fantastic.

Weakness:

At this price with this amount of performance?

Where to start? I've been into audio seriously for more than 20 years and have never owned a speaker I liked better, even though I've had many costing much more. I have a modest system based around a Denon AVR-3300 receiver and Adcom GCD-575 CD player. The Broze's don't require a whole lot of power as they have a rated room sensitivity of 92dB@1W@1M. I was a little concerned because their rated at 4 ohms, which can cause problems for some receivers, but they also have a 4 ohm minimum. I have a fiarly large listening room and the Bronze's fill it nicely and will play as loud as I could possible want. I felt the receiver after playing them for an extended period and driving five speakers in a HT mode; the receiver was barely warm. Mine have the cherry finish and look great. PSB supplies feet that screw onto the bottom of the cabinet and have rubber bottoms for wood floors as well as standard type spikes for carpeted floors. The sound, ooohhh..ahhhh!! That's what it's all about. I've listened to more music this past couple of weeks than I have for a long time. Unlike some speakers, everything sounds good on these. I listen to classic rock, jazz, classical, soundtracks, etc., you name it, I play it. If you like a forward in your face sound, you will not like these. They have a smooth (sweet) top end that you can listen to for hours on end. Some say they have a laid back sound, but I they are just very well balanced. They reproduce exactly whats being played as it was recorded. They have a tight and accurate bass that extends much deeper than you would expect from a speaker of this size and a huge soundstage. You can just feel the ambience and texture of the instruments. I tried to think of something I didn't like about these speakers, but couldn't. These speakers will just lure you into the music. I'm certain I will own PSB speakers from now on and only regret I just now found out about them. As a matter of fact, I'm going to sell my Bronze's and upgrade to the Silveri's just as soon as I can find a decent deal. I love the Bronze's, but there are small improvements as you move up the line. Basically the same sound, but more bass, power handling and nicer cabinets. But out of the three, the Bronze's definately represent the best dollar to performance ratio. Best deal of any speaker on the market that I've heard. If you've never heard these speakers, do so at your own risk. You won't be able to get thier sound out of your head.

Good value, as with other PSB products. I own the PSB 800i, 500i, 400i, and 200Ci, but I wanted a dedicated two channel stereo setup. Instead of the Image 5T or NHT, I bought the Bronze for its less harsh highs and smoother lows. I recommned it for the price I paid.

I auditioned everything I could find when trying to select "front" speakers for my home theater system. I auditioned manufactured by Polk Audio, Boston Acoustics, Infinity, B & W, Phase Technology, Paradigm, DCM, Mirage, Linn and PSB. Out of that whole group I only liked the Paradigms and the PSBs. I started out looking for "cheaper" bookshelf speakers, but soon realized that in order to get a "fuller" speaker, I would need a floorstanding speaker. I auditioned the PSB Atom line, the PSB Century line, and several systems by Paradigm when it came down to making the final decision. I chose the Stratus Bronze after about 4 weeks of carefully listening to other speakers. Even after listening to many different systems it was still difficult to select a pair of speakers that would truly satisfy me, and I was "hesitant" about my decision.
After having the speakers for about a month, I am truly amazed. I read many good things about PSB speakers, but only after I used them for a period of time did I really understand and appreciate their excellence. I have heard several speaker systems in the $15,000+ range and with the exception of the WAMM Puppies, they are ALL better than the Strtus Bronze. But, I think it would be very difficult to beat the Bronzes for the amount that I paid for them($900.

The speakers are very open, nuetral and balanced from top to bottom. They are great for home theater and wonderful for music. I have read many reviews on this site, and it seems to me that after people pay for a product, they give it a "good" review. I am not one of those people, and would report that the speakers are "worthless," even if I had just purchsed them.

These speakers really are excellent. Anyone in the market should give these considerable attention. I highly recommend them.

Spent the day auditioning speakers, tried Hales Revelation 2, Paradigm,PSB 800, NHT 2.5, B&W604's and a few others, final pair we tried were
the Stratus Bronze. No comparison, these kicked butt! VERY musical and
refined with good tight bass and excellent treble and midrange.
Wouldn't buy any others for the money. Sounded even better at home!
