PSB Speakers Image 4T Floorstanding Speakers

PSB Speakers Image 4T Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

This imaginatively designed product combines two 5-1/4" rubber-surround woofers with the new Image tweeter. Its 2-1/2-way design provides bass impact equivalent to a substantially larger driver, in a much slimmer cabinet, than a larger driver would allow, and with smoother response. This small, highly affordable tower is a large performer.

appearance, price, smooth sound, good bass

Demoed the speakers with music I know very well. Led Zep's Kashmir, Stanley Clark's East River Drive (loads of bass) was blown away for the price. Went to check out other speakers, but kept thinking about the 4Ts. I've had them for 1 month and they keep getting better. This is my first venture in hi-end audio. And I am very pleased with my purchase. I bought the 8C center channel too. Happy with the set-up all around. Great speakers. You won't go wrong buying these speakers.

Strength:

price, appearance (cherry finish), size, sound, bass response (due to size... come on, its not gonna work miracles!)

Weakness:

tweeter is HARSH at first

i have had these for around 1 month now. i listen to them for hours a day, and they get better each and every day. as most everyone has mentioned, they are a little bright at first (i prefer to call it harsh), and i was a little skeptical if i would end up liking them. however, after about 2 weeks of heavy use, they started to calm down. they tweeter loosened up, and the sound was much richer and less tinny.

i have not really owned anything this good before, so i cannot compare it to b&w's, etc... however, i have been accustomed to nice speakers. i know what sounds good. these definately sound great. the bass response is good, they dont THUMP like thunder, but they are also quite small. and what bass they DO have, is very very clean and precise. you can argue about a lack of bass, but i dont think you could argue about the quality of bass. and my opinion, quality above quantity.

i have these bi-wired with audioquest 4+. the range is extremely dynamic. i watch movies quite a bit with them, and i must say, they perform superb. the only downside is that they will reveal faults in your system. for instance, im still using some old surrounds, and center. now, they sound HORRIBLE, whereas before they were tolerable. but any good speaker will do that. (so im planning on getting image 1b's and 8c to complete it all).

also, i dont have the best equiptment, and it sounds great. you dont need to worry if your sony receiver you got from best buy would justify the speakers, they will still perform great.

just remember, positioning is key with these, i have one in the corner of my room, and another next to a desk, against the wall. this will give you optimum bass response. (as it says in the manual that comes with them...)

i am overall extremely pleased with them. (and at the price i got them for, i should be...) if you are looking for a lower priced high-end speaker, this is an option for you. plus, its one of the ONLY great speakers out there that has equally comparable components (ie, center, rears, etc...) so using this for home theatre is a great idea, because you have great matching speakers too. you dont have to settle for anything.

Strength:

Weakness:

none for this price.

I have been searching a good speaker for years. Have listened to many speakers costed much more than PSB 4T, however it's among the best I ever heard. Far better than JBl, JMlab. Sounds very flat, natural & smooth, that's what I like it most. It definitely sounds better than 5T. more open and natural. If you properly wired it, it's bass response should be very good. An excellent audiophile speakers at this price range.

Strength:

Excellent value, great highs, superb bass for size, compact size

Weakness:

Not the largest speaker in the world - but great sound from a small package

These speakers are an excellent value at under $600 for the pair - it would be very difficult to find a similar product for the cost with such great sound. Currently my setup is:

NAD 760
PSB Image 4t Speakers
Wireworld Luna Speaker Wire
Phillips CDR 870 as CD player
RCA consumer grade DVD

I live in a small apartment & currently only have the Image 4t's running & it sounds great. I definitely don't need a sub. I plan on getting the entire Image surround system when I move into bigger place. The 4t's provide very punchy bass - it surprised me. When I auditioned the speaker I thought that the dealer had the sub on when playing the music - but he didn't. The sound fills the room & although the speaker stands only 2 feet tall & is very slim it has big sound. Unless you have a huge listening room these would do the job. I have the cherry finish - which looks great - very sophisticated. I looked at a few other speakers - the new B&W's & Paradigms - but for the price the PSB's were hard to pass up. The innovative design of the 4t's really impresses me & the tweeter is excellent w/ tight sound. Overall, a very solid speaker w/ the music I enjoy - acoustic, jazz & a little classical. Go listen to these speakers & see what you think.

Seeing how I am from Canada, the PSB Image 4T's were a no brainer.

My first audition of PSB speakers were of the PSB Image 3LR. I really liked these little speakers, and after reading a review from Sound&Vision Magazine I was nearly sold on them. A few days later I went back to the store and was about to purchase them when I saw a pair of the PSB Image 4T's. Man, am I ever glad I took the time to listen to these babies. They sounded great. The amount of bass from a speaker of this size is fantastic and they are extremely clear on the high end. I find them much more forgiving on crappy CD's than the Paradigm speakers I was listening to (although the receivers might have something to do with this). To top it all off, they are one of the best looking speakers I have seen (very slim, very sexy). Even sexier with the grill covers off!

Oveall, I would highly recommend these speakers. For the price, they are hard to beat. (I paid about $700 CDN) for them.

My system inlcudes;

Sony 333ES Receiver
Sony 650D 5-Disk DVD Player
PSB Image 4T Front Speakers
PSB Image 1B Rear Speakers
PSB Image 8C Center Channel
PSB Subsonic 5

Strength:

Solid overall sound. Very neutral with my new A/V system.

Weakness:

slight distortion at High freq. ...could be my ears ;)

I have been looking for speakers that were as neutral and natural sounding as possible in the $500.00-$700.00 range. I demoed the NHTs and the Energys mentionned above, and almost went for the NHTs. Luckily, a friend of mine suggested the PSB image 4T. I did my reseach, read a very favorable review in Stereophile magazine, and finally located a dealer. I was extremely pleased with the accoutic Qualities. I had never listened to Psb speakers before.
I was sold on them listening to Diana Krall. Sound was crisp, almost transparent. Bass was quite adequate for me. The speakers were far from bright, which is also one of the reason I bought them.
The only negative feedback is that it seems to have a little distortion at high frequency when I use them to watch movies, especially during explosions and ripping noises. This is a subjective opinion and it could be my ears. I am a dentist and I have them subjected to the high pitch of a handpiece all day long. I'd like to know if anyone has observed that distortion.
Overall, and in this price range, I definitely recommend the Image 4Ts.
PS. for Mike (from Houston), I have bought the M&K V75 Mk II. It is a much better sounding subwoofer than any of the PSBs. You can get it for about $500-550 at the dealer I bought it from. Email me for his coordinates.

Strength:

open, airy, taut bass, crisp highs, warm mids, good looking

The deceased friend of mine Rock Hudson introduced me to the PSB products about 20 years ago and I was stunned, but at that time too busy with acting so I did not find much time for fulling around with any speakers or turntables. I bought
these speakers for my office and I play mostly blues and old country music on them. They have better bass response if you put them near room corners. Also, their bass response depends on the music you listen to. I tried them with some hip hop just to test their bass capabilities and believe me they can kick some serious nuts. If you mostly play Rolling Stones, get some serious power because these speakers love a lot of headroom for dynamics and consequently, better bass.
Just buy them if you want to experince some good vibrations.
Sincerely, Clint Eastwood

Strength:

Audiophile quality at consumer electronics chain store prices. Great sound imaging. Good looks.

Weakness:

Bass doesn't go below 40hz. But that doesn't matter if you use a subwoofer.

In reading online audio magazine reviews and message boards, I discovered the PSB brand. These are excellent speakers and a great value as compared to similarly priced good quality chain store brands such as Boston Acoustics, Polk, and JBL. I have the PSB Image 4T floor standing speakers, the PSB 8C center channel, the Boston Acoustics VRS Micro surrounds, and the Sony SA-WM40 subwoofer (which is an incredible value sub for home theater).

With the speakers properly balanced (using the AVIA Guide to Home Theater DVD), the sound imaging is truly 3D. Guests often look around the room ask "where are the speakers?" even though they are clearly in sight.

If you are not using a subwoofer but want a little lower bass range, you should consider the PSB Image 5T, which is the same height cabinet, but a few inches wider to accomodate its larger drivers.

I found some great prices on PSB speakers through Yahoo shopping, but not all are authorized dealers (which may be a warranty problem later). However, just by asking "What's the best price you can do on these?" my local retailer gave an excellent discount. It never hurts to ask.

After listening to track number 3 on fight club soundtrack i decided to return the speakers.
why?
cause 1 of them was a bad model. the bass elements almoust sounded blown as the sound "brrrrrrrrr" came out of the bottom airdock.
the other speaker had a little brr too but nothing compared.
fron the first day i got them 1 of the speakers sounded more "open" than the other, but the difference wasnt so much that i would care so i didnt care!
but now...
my god, i hope they accept my return!!??
i think im gonne change for the 5t`s...they can stand more pain!

Fantastic imagining! In two channel mode, you'd swear that the sound speakers were turned on. The sonic signature of these speakers are neutral and unassuming.

Weakness:

I am impressed to say the least. I began my quest for a significant upgrade to my HT system over a month ago and have done quite a bit of research. I fell in love with the Def Tech 2002TL a while ago and was ready to drop $2000 for the pair as well as $800 for the powered rears. But I didn't want to get overzealous and not do proper research before I made this investment. I demo'd the Def Techs with a variety of music and watched tracks of the DVD Matrix on them. I was ready to buy but I decided to wait just a little longer.

Then I stumbled onto a store (Home Theatre Experts) and was introduced to PSB for the very first time. After listening to the PSB's, I couldn't believe I ever thought that the Def Tech's sounded good. The PSB's don't provide very much bottom end...but they're not supposed to. Get a good sub (M&K or Velodyne) and that will solve that issue. What they do though is bring the music to your ears in an unforceful way. In two-channel music listening, you'd swear that the center channel as well as the rears was playing along. They place each instrument in the room in their proper place. It really was utterly amazing. The sound was detailed and not too bright as it was with the Mirage Frx line.

I brought two old college buddies of mine a week later to get their opinions on the Def Techs and the PSBs. We demo'd the PSB's first then went to demo the Def Techs. They were both extremely impressed with the PSB's. They totally agreed with my summation of them.

Then we demo'd the Def Tech's. The Def Tech 2002TL use a Bi Polar design that in comparison sounded terribly muddy, exaggerated, and just plain unrefined. I was also anticipating a much larger bottom end to these speakers. There is a 12" side-firing woofer powered by a 250 watt amp. One of my friends didn't have any preconceived ideas of what was in the cabinet and thought he was listening to an underpowered 8". The other commented that you can face any direction and get the same sound because what the Def Techs do is create an exaggerated sound stage that just envelopes the room like flooding water. I was so surprised, but if you don't have a frame of reference then you can't make an educated judgment.

The Mirage Frx7's didn't sound all that bad. However they didn't sound extraordinary either. The highs get a bit thin and whiny at times, but other than that, they would be a good investment.

To be honest, I am not going to buy the 4T's. I have ordered the 6T's instead. The 4T's have 2 5.25-inch woofers and a tweeter. The 6T's have 3 6.25-inch woofers and a tweeter and get down to 28Hz. I watch more movies than I do music so I felt the need to get a set of towers that provide a wider range of sound. However, the 6T's have the same sonic signature as the 4T's, they just move more air and drop it down a couple notches lower. If you're a music lover first then a movie lover then go with the 4T's and get yourself a good sub.

BTW: I am buying the 6T's, 9C, and the new Bipolar rears from their Image line for $1799.
