I scored rather nicely--found these speakers at a pawnshop for $250. New, they go for around $600. They're in perfect condition--and yes, I'm gloating.
As for sound: I'm very pleased. I usually listen to classical but put on some thunderous rap just to see how they handled the heavy bass. Just fine . . . almost too fine. With a FR of 25 - 25,000 Hz they cover the full range (at least in potential) and at 200 watts, they crank as well.

At loud volume, I perceived no bass distortion at all. The highs and mids are clear as well--I in fact heard orchestral details on familiar recordings which I never heard before.

I really can't think of anything negative about these speakers except that $2,000 - $5,000 speakers do sound somewhat better . . . even more defined. Anyone got an extra grand or two?

Strength:

Detailed, 3-D imaging, excellent vocals, Awesome acoustic music reproduction.

Weakness:

Placement is critical

I have owned these Polks for 8 years. I have NEVER felt the need to upgrade. In fact, I feel I would have to spend money beyond my means, to replace them. These Polks offer exceptional sound reproduction. They are capable of producing thunderous bass that is very tight and defined. The highs shimmer and mid's are very smooth. Once you find the right placement you are pulled into the soundstage and the 3-D imaging is awesome. The only thing I would recommend to a prespective consumer is that Polks DO NOT LIKE DIRTY AMPS!!! They are at their best when driven with a clean hi current. I am driving them With my Denon PMA 1080-R, and have NEVER heard distortion. Even after all these years, I still say "Wow". I really enjoy them. I would highly recommend them to anyone. Even if you could afford to spend more, why would you???

Strength:

Great Sound w/ low power

Weakness:

can't find one

I have had these speakers for some time. I bought them new in College when I didn't have a lot of cash but wanted "Audiophile" sound quality. These speakers do not disappoint!!! I had these powered by an NAD 705 Receiver that only put out about 35-45 watts per channel. Even with the relativly low power, these speakers delivered clear, detailed, thunderous musical performances without having to move the volume dial past 3 o'clock. I have always enjoyed the ability of this speaker to produce great highs for Cymbols and Tight Lows of Bass Drums without ever hinting at distortion, even when over stressed and under powered by the power source. Recently I bought a used Forte Model 3 amp (200 watts/ch) to "see how these babies work." It was incredible just how beautiful these little babies sounded. 200 watts is their rated max but you would think they could handle much more. Obviously with more power, more sound, but the clearity and depth of sound stage was impressive. These speakers are very efficient and great sounding. Yes, there are better sounding speakers, but for the price these are quite exceptional.
