Strength:

Clarity, detail, soundstage.

Weakness:

None that I have come across as yet.

These speakers were an early (one week) birthday present to myself. I kind of felt that I may have overpaid for them but then I called Polk and one of their tech support staff member told me that $550 is average for these speakers. Not bad considering their original price was $1200 for the pair!

I am more than satisfied with these speakers up to this point. And I haven't even biwired them yet. (That's next!) I have played jazz, classical, blues, rock, pop, R&B, and Spanish music through them and I have been delighted with the clarity with which all musical detail is reproduced. I am not one for thumping, boomy bass. I prefer a more natural sounding bass and the LS70's do not disappoint. Don't get me wrong, the bass can be powerful if that's how it was recorded on the album but it is a refined and passionate tone that is reproduced in the lower registers. The mid's are extraordinary, not to mention the highs, which displayed an airy timbre. The way I have been experiencing music through these speakers, I feel as if though I have upgraded all of my equipment at one time.

The LS70's reproduce a soundstage that is wide and clearly defined. As I listened to some jazz albums with closed eyes, I felt as if I could see the musicians, their instruments, and where they are seated -- both across the soundstage and from front to back. I could almost swear the musicians were physically in front of me. The sounds are expressed individually and there is little, if any, merging of sounds. When there was some merging of positions, it had more to do with the recording than the speakers themselves.

I recommend, without hesitation, the Polk Audio LS70's. I think it would be very hard to beat them for the money. Grab a pair, if you could find them. I have found myself being enveloped by the LS70's musical delivery time and time again. This is the best birthday gift I have given myself in a while. And it is a gift I will enjoy for years to come.

Strength:

A most outstanding tower speaker that can keep up with evolving A/V demands.

Weakness:

They ARE big and heavy

In building a high-end A/V system, I recently upgraded to a Yamaha RX/V1 top-of-the line A/V receiver and was concerned whether these speakers could own up to the musical and DVD output coming from this receiver. Was I shocked when I put the first CD into a DVD/CD/DVD-Audio player I also just added. I tested numerous new speakers using the "Englishman in NY" soundtrack from STING. When I heard it on my system, I was nearly floored because it sounded as good, if not better than the highest end speakers I tested (Vienna Acoustics) run on a higher end CD system. The quality I was most looking for and successfully found was satisfied to be able to hear the many distinct instruments in this complex song. The vocals, also exquisite, stood out in front of the instuments, just as you would expect on a live stage! Honstly, I did not notice that on any other system.

I got these old speakers at an incredible price through ebay from a true audiophile who took care of them as if they were his babies. I think these speakers are a true find and should be snached up if you ever see any for sale. They easily match $2000 speakers being produced today. Audio technology sure has advanced in the past 5-10 years and most old audio equipment, except for its vintage value, does not come close to new equipment. But it seems for some items, like speakers, we can still say: "They sure don't build them like they used to."

I have owned my Polk LS70's for about a year now and am please beyond belief. I had previously owned a pair of Polk Monitor 5's and was pleased with the way they preformed but they where limited due to size. The LS70's have a very natural sound that is great if you like classical music, but are just as good when it comes to good old rock and roll. My receiver is a Harmon Kardon AVR25II that has a great low end that really brings the LS70's to life. I bought my speakers over the Internet and only paid $350.00 for them, so I can honestly say I don't think there is another pair of speakers that can touch them at that price.

I have owned the polk ls 70s for about 3 yrs now. I am not very happy with the sound. The speakers are driven by a Yamhaha RXV-870. The sound is distant and not foward at all. Maybe Ive been to too many Discos and damaged my hearing. They seem to lack brightness, mids are fine and the bass could be tighter. I am starting to look at the Paradigm line. I used to own the KLH pistols back in 79+ or 80. They sounded great!!!

Strength:

Superb accuracy and soundstage

Weakness:

None that I have found

I just bought these speakers used a week ago. I had some Polk LS50s which I was very happy with but they just couldn't seem to handle the output of my system without degrading the sound in higher volume levels.
However I was happy enough with them that I wanted to get some from the same series of speakers. Polk stopped making the LS series a few years ago which could make this difficult. I found someone that was willing to sell me theirs over th internet and
they arrived this past week. Boy what a difference!
The LS-70's make up for the minor weaknessess of the LS50s. The bass is booming but very clear. The tweeter and midrange has all the detail and imaging of the LS50's. Possibly better. Considering the fact that I liked
the old speakers better than some Paradigm Monitor 9s and some B&W 605 S2s that I recently listened to, you can imagine that I am estatic over these LS70s. Considering that I found them used for about a quater of the cost
of what those newer speakers cost, they are also a great bargain. Now I can use my old speakers for rears for when I get a surround system.
I highly reccomend this speaker series as a whole if you come accross them in your search for new speakers. You won't regret them.
