Strength:

Loads of bass, tight, clean and way down there for the size! Look great

Weakness:

Can't remove the grilles, I'm dying to see the drivers in there.

I picked up a pair of the older Phantoms, large bookshelf model. They are nice, although not as detailed, open and musical as my smaller and older Paradigm 3se minis. They do sound good with my old Yamaha CR 620 receiver. The 3se minis are a noticeably better sounding speaker, but these are fun, and they do rock!

Great speakers, had them for at least 3 years. Just like everyone else said, the addition of a subwoofer would make them too good for the price. Just to brag I paid $200 for mine(and I don't work at a store or know anyone that works at one).
For price I would say : *****
but overall:

I just received the new Version 2 Phantoms this week. I am using them for my rear surround speakers. All in all, not a bad set of speakers for $400. They do the job they were intended to, but they are world beaters either. I love that Paradigm still makes a wood finish speaker other the black. I have the light cherry finish and they fit with the rest of my living room decor. If you need a small tower speaker to compliment your mains, try these.

See below. The reason I am updating my review is that I just bought a pair of PSB Stratus Gold i's. The Phantom is remarkably close to the 8x as expensive speaker except for the deep bass.

Strength:

clarity, flat mid range, and price

Weakness:

grill cover doesn't come off, but big deal

The Paradigm phantoms are the clearest sounding speakers I have ever heard for $400. They don't put out tons of bass, but it is clean bass. Besides, you should add a sub for 5.1 sound. The best thing about Paradigm's clarity is the fact that not one range out powers another. Some speakers are real deep and some (like Infinity) are real high, leaving the mids unheard and forgotten. These speakers are so even and smooth. I had these speakers for over 2 years and they are awesome. Remember, you can spend $15,000 for a pair of speakers. For $400 these are untouchable. Remember, Canadians make the best speakers.

If you are willing to spend a little bit more, check out Energy. They too sound really good for the money, but usually cost a bit more. It comes down to taste. It never hurts to shop.

Strength:

Inexespensive, good all around sound for the price

Weakness:

Not Biampable, a little mushy in lower bass, can get too bright on a few songs

Being a long time fan of Paradigm speakers I was interested in checking out thier budget floorstander. I have owned a few pairs of loudspeakers from Paradigm and this one is a strong performer. They sound a lot like the titans with the exception that they will play a bit lower. Now they tend to get mushy on deep bass notes at high volumes, but at 85Db 8 feet away, they sound great. A local store had a refurbushed pair for 250 with a few blemishes so I pick up a set for my basement stereo. Now keep in mind that they are not the greatest speaker, but for the price they sound much better than anything you can buy at a chain store. If you want to get into high end sound, the Phantom is a good starting point.

Strength:

mid and highs, price

Weakness:

weak bass (but good sounding), grills don't come off

Great value speakers!!! I compared these to Dali 5005 and B&W 603 and the Paradigm was better sounding and had a lower price. The mid-range is fantastic, vocals in rock-music sounds excellent!
The bass is a bit weak though, but the sound is great. For this price these are top-notch and gets my highest recommendation. Great for home-movies but probably needs a subwoofer to get the real kick.

The Paradigm Phantoms are great speakers. I had a pair of JBL L3's that listed at 8oo.oo a pair(I got the floor models for 400.oo). I happened to hear the Phantoms at a local audio store and was amazed! I listened to Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams", a track off of their "Rumours" album. The vocal sounded amazing, and I was listening to a radio broadcast! I checked to see if there were any bass boost or other tone controls involved in this great sound and they were not involved in the sound. The mark of a good speaker is it's ability to sound good WITHOUT bass boost, equilizers, ect. I naturally had to get these speakers, especially since they were half the list price of the L3's!! I found them to have a very realistic overall tone quality and very accurate highs. I would recommend these speakers to anyone who is on a budget but wants good speakers.

have had the paradigm phantoms for about 3 years. Great speaker for the money and great for music as well as home theater. have not had the desire to upgrade as yet because the only thing lacking is deep bass for which i have a subwoofer.
