I agree with all the previous reviews. I replaced very old Dahlquist 10's with these Optimus speakers (bought 4 for Home Theater). I added the Linaeum tweeters and bought an Optimus 100 watt receiver (on sale for $169) to run a pair of Optimus subwoofers. My main receiver is a Sony 825 with a subwoofer output. That combination produces incredible sound!

These were at one time $199/each and now are being closed for about $69/each. The treble is pretty good but slightly forward, midrange is ever so lightly colored (don't know if it has enough sound dampening material but I suspect it is not in a isolated from the bass driver enclosure like most low-end speakers), and the bass is controlled for the most part except at loud volume it does get boomy (like most low-end speakers, but this could be fixed easily with polyfill). Though I have to disagree with a previous post because I thought these imaged better and had less of soundstage presence as the PRO-LX10 (maybe the difference of the way we both might have set it up). My personal opinion this is the best tower that RS offers (since the midrange is less muddled than LX-10) for music but the larger soundstage to me is preferred for HT. This tower does need the support from a sub (please don't buy a RS sub, they aren't too good unless you buy the SW-14P use more POLYFILL and an outboard amp) but is a very great bargin for it's price. I suggest if you are a "do-it-yourself" kind of guy buy the Linaeum Tweeter and make a bypass switch for movie and music for the tweeter (a friend did this and I was very impressed) and this tower becomes a very all purpose sound producer (don't forget to POLYFILL) that will do it all. 3 stars as is, 4 stars when polyfilled, and 5 stars if you also add the Linaeum tweeters and a switch for movies and music. By the way this does really look like a budget tower for all of you who is interested but sounds better than most budget towers that you can find at Best Buy, Circuit City, and most of your local shopping mall stores (assuming they don't have high-end and BOSE definately aren't high-end and these will outperform them as is but you must really try these at home) but you might have to set them up yourself because RS usually have them setup horribly or not at all.

Just got the STS 800's for $69 each at RadioShack... Great Deal!
Although the lows aren't too low, the Velodyne sub I own makes up for it quite well. Crossover is set on 65Hz, around the range where the speakers kick in. The tweeters are crisp but what lows it can achieve are a bit muddy.

Great buy for the money! Get them while you can! 4 Speakers - Value!

Well, I needed some new speakers to replace my extremely old ones (I won't say the brand name to save myself some embarrasment), so I was going to buy some Bose 301's....that is, until seeing the reviews on this site. So, I go into RadioShack to look at two-way radios and see these tower speakers on sale for only 69.99 apiece...great deal! These are some very nice speakers and they are just about giving them away! I have not experienced any muddy bass from these at all...it may be my setup or something. It really does help them if you: A. Place them in a corner at an angle B. Have Loudness on your reciever on (if needed) C. Adjust your reciever's tone controls. The highs and mids were just great! I thought that the tweeters were exceptional. These should satisfy every casual listener and almost all Audio Enthusiasts...and, at the price they're at, you should go out and pick these up anyway! (You've got 30 days to decide if you want to keep them.) 5 Stars for great hi-fi tower sound at a lo-fi bookshelf speaker price!
