I searched around for ages looking for a brand new, in the box pair of these things based on reviews I have read on here. I'm very glad I did.
I would only be classed as a "casual user" as even though I like to read up on the latest stuff and spend a large part of my income on my system and CDs. For the size of these speakers the sound is incredible. I had a guy round the other night whose eyes bulged in surprise when I clicked on my TV/receiver set up.

For music I find the bass perfect, but I am NOT a bass fiend at all.

All in all, I think that I would be hard pushed to find a better sounding or constructed pair of speakers for the $100 I paid. I really feel that for ten times the money a pair of speakers in a general home setup could sound much better.

Ed.

I used to have these speakers as my fronts in a surround system, but replaced them with LX-5s. Looking back, I believe they sounded almost as good, maybe better in some respects. They seemed better matched to my SW-14 sub (less resonance). The lower midrange is not as harsh as with the LX-5s, but they can't fill the room as well, and can't handle a pounding as well. I feel the X-77s are great for the money, and make great satillites. Two small details I don't like: cheap connectors (should have binding posts), and that hard to clean textured plastic finish. As far as the real concern goes, the sound is pretty good.

Strength:

Clean, sweet, natural highs with excellent imaging. Very good built quality.

Weakness:

None, really!

I use these speakers as surrounds. Their built quality is excellent, and the imaging and overall sound quality is very good expecially the highs which are very sweet, smooth and clear. Of course you need a sub for the lows but that goes without saying. overall EXCELLENT.

I bought these speakers only a few months after they came out. Like all of us, I was very skeptical of the Radio Shack/Optimus name, but when my friend threw away his bookshelf Infinity Kappa speakers with e-mit tweeters, and switched to these guys, I just had to check them out! I have had them for over 3 years now, and the lineum tweeter inside of them is their total secret to sweet sound. I listen to a broad variety of music including jazz/new age, the bass thumping modern dance music, classical, and pop/rock. These speakers bring out the best in the music. I can sit back, close my eyes, and the music comes from all angles of the room. I'll be looking at the speakers, and that's not even where the music appears to be coming from. My biggest complaint: bass is terrible. Throw a subwoofer on these, and you're set. They are also not very good at the higher ear shattering volumes. My Pioneer VSX-D606S makes them pop at only half volume -- I guess this is to be expected from a pair of bookshelf speakers on a receiver that is pumping 100 watts RMS into all 5 channels. If you're looking for a great value, get a set of these today! They are on sale right now at Radio Shack for only $50 a piece, and they stand up quite well to speakers that cost as much as 2 or 3 hundred dollars each! I just got done listening to some speakers tonight at Circuit City, as I was considering replacing these, and I must say that the sound I heard wasn't much better on speakers in the 1-300 each price range.

Well I'm going to join in and give these puppies 5 stars also. I've been using them for about 2 years as surround speakers in my HT system and I love them. I've tried CSW dipole/bipole speakers for surrounds and returned them in favor of the 77s. The sound out of these things is very musical, sweet and pure. I listen to a lot of surround music on DTS CDs which send a lot of music and even vocals to the surround channels and the 77s are sensational. Corey Greenberg gave them an excellent review although he felt that the tweeter was a little beamy. My only criticism is that they have spring clips instead of binding posts, otherwise, the build quality is excellent and they look good too having rounded edges and corners. They often are on sale at Radio Shack for $79 each. Get em they're fantastic for the money.

Use 3 for LCR and PRO-LX5 rears, PRO SW-14 on rightside and another left. Far better bargain than BOSE for small sub-sat combo. This is my bedroom setup, see the Optimus LX-8 for the main room.

Having heard the many of the paradigm speakers (studio 20's, minimonitor, titans), I must say that these pro x77 are right up there. Maybe not at high listening volumes, but definitely, I'm glad I got them over the minimonitors. Of course, the key lies in the Linaeum ribbon tweeters. The pro x77 uses the monopole 180 degree tweeter. These tweeters never sound bright and convey a pleasant musical quality. Good sound stage...image is good, if not great.
The prox77 is not as boomy in the bass range as the lx-5 and thus sounds cleaner to me. I would easily recommend them as satillites for an HT system. I believe the optimus CS-5 uses the same woofer and tweeter. AND the most amazing part is the price...I got a pair for $28 each. I believe the speaker is being discontinued but a similar version (x88?) with a metal grill continues to be produced.

These speakers are OEM'ed by Aura (as best as I can tell)...who now has the rights to the lineaum tweeter technology. Having heard several of the aura speakers, I would say you can get 95% of the sound quality of the auras through some of the optimus speakers. Just gotta watch out for the boomy-bass in the LX-5 and LX-10.

I give the prox77 five stars for amazing sound at almost unbelievable prices.

Strength:

sound stage, price,bragging rights!

Weakness:

:o

i first bought a pair of these around '94 when they first came out.i'm not sure but i believe they were manu.
by linaeum spkrs.who i believe now are out of business.they made one under their own banner that was just about the 77's
twin,except about 350. more.
but back to the important stuff, for the last 7 years these have been the mainstays in my sound sys. at first music only and the last 5 years home theatre. even after all this time, thousands of cd's and at least that in movies
these things continue to impress me. sweet sounding, pin-
point imaging, adequate bass for size :o. although i have teamed mine with a pair of active yamaha subs from the get go, it is possible to use them on their own (giving up some
bottom bass. placement is KEY here). i auditioned 3 other
sets of speakers before i found these jewels, yamahas, vegas
and infinitys, and then a friend turned me on to these and
i was sold.now i have x77's l/c/r and a pair of lx5's as my
l/r surrounds(another pretty good speaker from optimus),
along with the above mentioned subs. this system definitley out performs any bose sub/sat combo and gives you a more
pure sound to boot.shame radio shack didn't realize what they had because i don't believe you can get these anymore.

well anyway heres to good rockin'

I purchased my Pro X77's after I read a positive review in an Audiophile mag.when they were new to the market.I mated them with the Optimus 12" subwoofer and next to best center channel speaker. That was about 2 years or so ago, recenty I upgraded to a Sony STR-DE935 home theater reciever,DVD etc.but when it came to changing my X77 surrounds, which I and vistors had always been impressed with,I found that I would have to pay at least $800 for high end speakers that I listened to that would give any measurable improvement! I am very glad I stayed with these little wonders, they sound awesome with the Sony and still impress to this day.I invited an older friend over to watch Private Ryan and during the opening sequence he ask me to stop the movie for awhile as the realism of the movie and the sound of machinegun fire and bombs bouncing off the walls in my livingroom was more than he could handle :-) I am going to upgrade the subwoofer (to boomy) and center channel speaker but for now, I am sticking with my Pro X77's

Strength:

sweet highs, tight bass

Weakness:

mounting brackets are ridiculous

I wanted to try these after reading the glowing reviews posted here. At first, I could only find one for $20 on closeout at the local Shack. I paired it with a different Optimus model and ran the TV through them. Not a great test, but I liked what I heard. Finally, after months of searching I caught a pair on eBay for $40 (but another $31 for shipping, unfortunately) and set them up on my desktop computer. These are wonderful speakers! My kids listen to lots of mp3's and cd's at the computer and the sound is fantastic. I especially admire the bass -- powerful (given the size) but exceptionally tight and clean. The high end is also excellent. I can't imagine a better choice for a small bookshelf speaker. I use a pair of 1972-era Infinity Monitor IIA's for my main stereo system, and these X77's are just for smaller jobs, but they are top-notch for many uses.
