Strength:

fantastic build quality, very attractive, trustworthy company, very high value

Weakness:

none

I''ve listened to Ohm speakers for about 20 years now, beginning with Ohm E bookshelf speakers, moving up to the venerable Ohm L bookshelf speaker, and migrating to the Ohm Sat 1 system a couple years ago when space constraints called for something smaller and more versatile. The strongest aspect of the Ohm satellite speakers is that they have a much lower bottom end than most satellite speakers. The overall sound is natural, and they handle music and home theater well....an unusual balance. The company that makes them -- Ohm -- also deserves comments. Ohm is a tremendous pleasure to work with. When you contact the company, it is not unusual to get a response from the company president...that''s right, the president. When I purchased the speakers from Ohm''s factory, I had one of the lead designers spend unhurried time with me demonstrating them. Ohm is a great company you can really trust, and it is such a pleasure to deal with competent people.

SAT-1 / 120Pk Watts / $220 Pr./ BLACK Only / 8"x7"x7"The SAT-1 ‘automatic!’ rear speakers for older standard stereos!!! and Dolby DIGITAL® AC3(DTS) are uni-directional. This means that they have one single speakers driver in each cabinet in order to produce one controlled single sound wave into the room. The physical shape of the speaker cabinet is cut to allow the sound to disperse in a controlled forward pattern while spreading the soundwave like a bubble. The sound quality can be heard even if you stand behind the speaker. In fact the shape is similar to the human head. If you want to experiment just have someone talk to you while she/he turns their back to you. The persons voice lowers a tiny bit in volume but not in quality. This scientific design is based on natural sound wave movement. If you are looking for a speaker that is absolutely natural sounding but just a more comfortable on the highs, then the SAT-1 is perfect as a front speaker when used in combination with the SB-1 subwoofer. You will observe, through your minds eye, a transparent controlled front soundstage as intended by the recording studio engineers. On one test that we did, the SB-1 is placed like a pedestal on the floor in the corner of the room. With one SAT-1 mounted to the wall on the swivel bracket about seven feet above the subwoofer and the other SAT-1 thirty feet away in the other corner, an incredible image appears perfectly between them and the speakers themseves seemingly disappear! Everything is coming into the room exactly where it’s supposed to be and the speakers are not even part of the equation !!!

When the SAT-1 is used as the rear speakers either for the Dolby Prologic system or the ‘automatic!’ 3-D Ohm Theater for Films & Music(tm) system, you have control of the entire image in the room. The sound is not just great, but equivalent to nature itself ! The SAT-1s added to a system excite your central nervous system’s auditory senses! The SAT-1 when used as a rear speaker can be combined with the SB-1 or the SB-4 in order to reproduce the entire range of material. There happens to be bass recorded in every source of sound media. However, by adding just the SAT-1 alone in the rear, everybody loves it and hears a much more natural sound in the room in 3-D controlled surround with more bass and the miraculous front image appearing out of nowhere!!!

The SAT-1 has construction features that are generally left out of most other manufacturers speaker designs. First of all is the super space age material used in the driver, the frame, in the magnet (voice coil), and the cabinet density itself. The cost of the speakers is based on these materials alone. The metal frame and magnet is always so inadequately designed by most speaker manufacturers. Most speaker companies could not care less about space age technology. It’s a part of the speaker that you don’t see and to build a speaker properly always adds a lot of cost in manufacturing. When all of the proper materials are used , the speaker’s lifespan is close to thirty years!!! Ohm speakers consists of the finest elements available in the world! There is absolutly no effect to the drivers from dryness, moisture, heat, or cold. The speaker is made of super space age polymers. Ones Ohm has invented and ultimately passed on into the speaker industry. When you buy Ohm you are paying for the speaker. Perma-fluid is a very expensive coolant material that allows the speakers to be played for a longer period of time at higher volumes. Very few companies use this! Ohm installs it into each and every driver and has done so since the ferro-fluid product was invented in the late 1970’s! The size of the speaker driver element is determined by the overall frequency range that the speaker is stipulated to transmit. This speaker produces mid to deeper resonating frequencies from 100 Hz up to a very smooth high frequency of 12K Hz. Like in any major purchase, the consumer wants to get the best quality and price. If you can buy speakers all at the same competitive pricing there is no question about buying Ohm, a far superior and easier to use product !!!

Ohm Speaker Company truly deserves 5 stars for this speaker system. In fact, the company deserves 5 stars for its willingness to help its customers upgrade even their original line of speakers. Yes, you read it correctly. I said upgrade. I have owned Ohm’s C2's for almost 20 years now and when the foam finally wore out, I contacted Ohm on the internet. Ohm’s President--yes, not a sales person, walked me through repairing and upgrading of this 20 year old speaker; all at a cost far less than comparable new speakers. You know, I spent a year trying to purchase new speakers--and could not find one pair that had the realistic sound of OHM. For a really nominal fee, Ohm sent me a kit that had new woofers, crossovers and a digital upgrade. With their instructions and some glue, I had brand new speakers.
A year or so later, I added two rear mounted OHM SAT 1's, and a SAT 2 center speaker with their smaller sub to make a completely integrated Home theater speaker system. And what a system it is. The best thing about the SAT satellites (besides the fact that my wife loves their space age look) is that they work both for music and Home Theater. Coupled with my 50-inch Toshiba TV the speakers enhance the sound from my collection of 600 Videos and 350 DVDs. Neighbors who come to our weekend “movie” parties cannot believe the realistic and spatially correct sound that these speakers make in our 20x20x18 great room. Just add some home made popcorn--no microwave please-and it is a family experience better than most that you can find at those crammed 20 plexers.

The problem with most home theater speakers is that they sound
“Incorrect” with music. Not the SAT1s. Clear, crisp, natural sound--like you are sitting at a concert. With a CD collection of 200+ cds, music is constantly on in my house. This speaker system handles all types of music from Opera to Symphony to my 70's FUNK --at any sound level. If I utilize the receivers various hall type formats, you actually think that you are at the concert. And I have been to live performances that include everything from James Taylor to the Red Hot Chili Peppers; from the Cleveland Symphony to the Pittsburgh Symphony; From the MET, to the 3 Tenors at Kennedy Center; from the Beatles to the Rolling Stones; from Faith Hill to Cameo.

If you want more expensive speakers I suggest speaking with OHM, they have a great product line--I referred my father to them (yes, even my mother likes the looks) and he uses their CAM line of speakers with great satisfaction). If you want the AC3 ability to hear the full spectrum, try their SAT2's as rear speakers instead of my SAT 1's.

Now, I am not their CEO, nor related to them in any way, but I consider myself a connoisseur of music and an aficionado of movies. You are missing something in your life if you have never heard music or a movie soundtrack through OHM speakers. My suggestion is to try them: you, your family, your friends, your kids will be amazed. As Ohm says, “Good listening!”
