Mordaunt-Short MS-908 Floorstanding Speakers

Mordaunt-Short MS-908 Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

Flagship of the 900 range, the Mordaunt-Short 908 is a 3-way floorstanding loudspeaker that combines the astonishing mid-band resolution and treble claritty of the smaller 900 models with the power, authority and awesome drive only obtainable from a dedicated sub-woofer. These substantially proportioned, cricitally damped dual-enclosures have a complement of high frequency, mid-range and bass units that are equally capable of communicating the finesse and subtleties of recorded music as the thundering bass and sound track effects of home theater material.

Strength:

Detailed high yet not too sharp, and sounds lovely as it sings. Deep bass yet controlled. Superb value for money. A scoop at 500pounds. Would give 6stars if given the option.

Weakness:

Require powerful amps to drive. Positioning is a top priority as it has side firing big powerful woofer.

Yup just got to my speaker. One word of advise for a start. DO NOT BUY FROM MOSS OF BATH in BATH, UK. They are pathetic useless, bad service and bad follow up on sales. I have waited 5 weeks to get this set of speaker. If it is not because they are the only dealer for MS, I wouldnt have go for them.... :( OK, forget those thing...... here is the review. It is a very detailed speaker and excel at highs. If you audition it, it really sings. :) Bass wise, it has deep low end, bass is rather control. Word of advise, do not put at the corner of the wall, it is too boomy, putting further frm the wall free up the bass and sounds more controlled. DO not invert the speaker too much as you might have a "blind spot" of soundstage. With slight inversion and away from the sidewall especially (cause it has side fired bass), soundstage improves tremendously. This speaker need to be drive roughly half of my 100watts amp to SING and SING. At lower volume you dont really fully appreciate its hidden ability. My system: MF X-ray, Arcam FMJ A22, QED silveranniversary biwire (high), Kimber 8tc bass, PSS octet IC (pure silver). Other add on: MF Xcan V2, Senheiser HD600, VDH hybrid, n personal MD player. Ferrite clamps, RFI suppressor and voltage regulator. To compare with what I have auditioned: KEF Q5: It sings with Rotel amps, superb soundstage, but slightly too coloured. Moderate bass but didnt test more bassy music. With Marantz, horrible, too subtle and light. I would have bought KEF Q5 if it is cheaper but no $$ to spare. BW 603 S3: With Marantz: too subtle and light. Maybe cause of the Marantz amp. Sorry for fans of Marantz. BW 604 S3: On 4 MF amps, X-ray, QED, VDH hybrid, sounds too boomy for me even it is far from the wall. Generally, MS908 beat these speakers. Might be because of the ability of the speakers itself, or might be the amplifier.

Strength:

Detail with voices, performance with 5.1 sound

Weakness:

The lack of real "punch" in the lower-mid with music (might be the stereo performance of my Yamaha RX-V1000 reciever?)

At first I thought my ears had fooled me in the HIFI store. But when I proper installed the speakers (in my case verry close to the wall, about 25 CM) their sound was really roomfilling (6x5 meter livingroom). I thought that the distance from the wall was really to narrow (audiophile magazins say that this wil give a lumpy bass) but I realised just recently that is for my livingroom the best position. Togheter with my yamaha cdx 596, yamaha dvd 796 and the strong rx-v1000 the make the room shake with action dvd's and produce crisp sound with music. Like a say'd I still think there is a small "hole" in the lower-mid with music but I hope to solve this with a dedicated stereoamp (any sugestions???) You must bi-wire (and bi-amp) this spaeakers, this really improves their soundimage.

Please forgive me my writingskils in English

Strength:

Great clarity:Punchy bass,highly detailed mids,Ultra-clear highs

Weakness:

Sound depends a whole lot on placement...

I bought these after checking out Jamo X3M 8's/10's and Klipsch Ref 3's...The MS 908's sounded as deep/punchy/sharp as the X3M-10's(X3M-8's were way too sharp/trebly)and presented a more "room-filling" sound with a much larger "soundstage".The Klipsh's had great sounding mids and plenty of power, but did'nt have the class of the 908's..especially the highs..
I listen to nothing but Metal/Heavy-Rock(power/prog/death/grind/old-school,true,whatever..).I've hooked these 908's up to my Onkyo TX DS 676 Reciever & they sound awesome...Heavy,Clean & Crisp with loads of power! The detail is amazing especially with highly intricate,ultra- technical metal like Spiral Architect,Ark,Symphony X etc..and they still manage to sound warm too.
When I first got them,I'd placed them in the middle of my(large-ish)room..away from the corners.Huge mistake!!The highs were way too sharp/loud...but that totally changed when i stuck them in the corners(a foot away)close to the back wall(15-20 cm)about 10-12 feet apart & angled inwards considerably..they completely came to life!!!...These speakers RAGE!!Don't hesitate to BUY THEM!!

Weakness:

None so far

These absulutely sound amazing. I went into the store with my mind set on purchasing the 906, but only one listen changed my mind (Dave Mathews Band - Don't Drink the Water), even though they were far more than what i had my budget set on. Soundstage is amazing and music extremely warm, the 10" dedicated woofer is definetly a must if you have a large room, eliminates the need for a subwoofer for home theatre. For Siemo who has posted a review above, i looked around a lot for which amplifier to purchase, and got a Marantz PM6010, which goes extremely well with the Mordaunt Shorts, you don't know what the speakers are sound like if you are listening to them on a Yamaha reciever. The Marants does wonders for the sound, i suggest to anyone to match these together. I also have a Marantz SR4200 Reciever for which these speakers perform real well in home theatre mode. The Spike also make the speaker very firm and stable even if your ground isn't. Good speakerplacement will only enhance the sound. A sugestion to other buyers who, if it is out of your budget, wait some time and save some more to buy these, your patience will be rewarded, with Sound and it's amazing looks. I give it a 4star rating on the value cause they are available for much cheaper in most other countries, about US500, and the taxes here are way too high too. But the sound quality makes me forget that.

Strength:

Built in sub wooofers, Stereo and home theatre performance alike, looks, build quality

Weakness:

None that I have found yet.

The 908 declaration series speakers are fantastic.
It only took a couple of tests to realise these were the speakers I had been looking for.

Some people say they have a slight bright or shiny sound but coupled with the right amp/reciever they produce a crisp sonic sound that is fantastic for home theatre and fast paced music. They are lively and upbeat and a joy to listen to.
When they are used with the 905C centre channel and 902 rears they produce an imensely impressive sound stage with matched drivers all around adding to the liquid smooth sound from front to back.
The only downfall is they need a decent amp or receiver to really come to the fore, but lets face it, what speakers dont?
Overall a very impressive set of main's which I would recommend to anyone. There price is a bargain for what they give you. Doesnt hurt that they look absolutely georgeous too ;)

Strength:

versatile allround sound

Weakness:

for the price above i've got the 905 center thrown in as well (very, very good deal). clear mixture of high and low range presented, solid bass without the boomy resonance. have tried DALI Blue series 6006 but the high range is not define as the MS 908.

needs good bi-wire cable to bring out the best of this exotic piece of gear. beautifully presented with the technological "spacy look"
