Strength:

Incredible sound for bargin price

Weakness:

None

After reading the review in Home Theater mag and some coaxing from my brother, I purchased the silver 5's and the silver center. I have never been so pleased with speakers until now. They are great for video and are awesome on music. I would and have recommended them to everyone I know.
Home Theater was right on the mark when they said "just buy them", believe me you won't reget it.

I have a home theatre system with DCM Time windows & a Kef 100 center that i'mvery happy with. But, I was never happy listening to music CD's in 2 channel
on the system. I've been searching for a pair of speakers for music only for
over a year. I have auditioned PSB Gold i's, Paradigm Studio 100's, NHT 2.9s' 3.3's and many more, non of them did it for me. Then I heard the Monitor Silver
5i's I was amazed. I have never heard such clear open sound with such imaging
and from a relatively small floor standing speaker. The store allowed me to take the speakers home for an audition with my electronics and room acoustics. without bi-wiring or mass loading they were unreal. (I did angle them back slightly as reccomended) At $800. my purchase price they are a steal. They get 5 stars for sound, build quality and looks(Don't use grills)

In absolute terms these speakers are fair. Relative to their competition at or near the same $ they are winners.
Four stars. Five for value.

bass, size, price.

after reading the famous ht article I thought that I would audition these speakers. Well after seeing the fact that these look like they were designed for a five year old to be in the sweet spot (ht says they need stands and they are not kidding, which should not be true because these are not bookshelf speakers). The finish on these is just amazing for a thousand dollar speaker, but thats about it. Don't get me wrong they do sound fairly good but you have to spend 2k to get a full sound because you have to buy a sub to go with these, key word have to!!!! There is no bass extension, actually the bass extension is very good for 5 1/4 inch drivers, but thats all you get. I like to hear a full soundscape comming from my speakers when listening to music or ht. I don't understand this concept now days of using an oversized tweeter, which this is. What you are getting is a glorified oversized satelite speaker. I really like what ar is doing with their speakers, (check out the reviews of the ar1 and 315, and also the ar2c center). These have two 5 1/4 inch drivers and a 1" tweeter like the silvers but then also have 500 watt carver sunfire powered 15 in woofers built in. Well thats enough of this review just thought you should know that you shouldn't just "buy these speakers now".

I don't know what these people who say the silver 5i 's are over rated are smoking
but wake up. When you listen to these speakers you will find the have great tonal
quality, dynamic mid- range and unbelievable bass for a small speaker. Some
may not like the Idea of a small speaker but the technology that Monitor Audio
used in the speaker is excellent. These speakers kick ass to put it accurately and
have my highest recommendation for anyone who wants sonically accurate
speakers for a great price. A message to those people that call them "over rated"
check your equipment or what ever garbage you are using to push the 5 's because
you are dead wrong.

Strength:

Sounds great, viseral, detailed and fluid( I sound like a wine salesman)

Weakness:

None that cant be fixes

The various criticisms are bs. Yes its too short so get stands. Not enough bass- get a sub ( although in my opinion the bass is great-not heavy bass but enough and very musical)

Ive listed to speakers at 5-10 times the price and I really like these speakers best.(who knows if they are the best-and what is the best anyway-its totally subjective) My advice is to buy these speakers and put the rest of your money in the bank or give it to charity (the poor house for out-of-control broke audiophiles perhaps)Just as an aside i bought the Parasound monoblocks from Audioadvisor. They are new and a limited addition $500 for 2. They are excellent my opinion-a real deal. 150 watt monoblocks with gold binding posts. The downside is that they are made in twaiwan and there may be quality control issues.(mine are fine)my set up is the ps monoblocks with an creek obh 12 and kimbeber 4pr

Strength:

Gorgeous to look at and they sound even better

I purchased these speakers after listening to them at a local dealer and reading the rave reviews in some of the trade magazines. Most reviews here are right on. These 5i's do bring out the best AND the worst in your equipment. I upgraded my speaker cables and that made an immediate improvement. I also know they started sounding smoother after about 3 weeks of listening. I don't know how many hours were on them in that three weeks, but the highs and mids now share the stage as well as any speaker I could possibly afford. Some reviews here complain about rock and roll music not sounding the best with these speakers.. I'm sure they are right. They should go get speakers with 5 or 6 drivers that will pound them into a migraine. I love how the 5i can play at increasingly high volumes without changing their sound like lesser speakers do. There are details in each one of my CD's that I hadn't heard until listing to them with these speakers. Now I can listen for hours without fatigue. Give them a LOT of time to break in and feed them a clean signal and you will be very happy. If you a home theater fan, get a powered sub and you too will be very happy. 5 stars!

Strength:

best speakers in its price range

Weakness:

small stature

the only other speakers that offer comparable performance with the monitor audio silver 5's are the b&w 600 series that i just recently heard. No other speaker can match its detail and accuracy for the same amount of money. Good bass response for a smaller tower.

BEST SPEAKER IN ITS CATEGORY, PERIOD!

I'd give them a 5 for overall rating but there are better loudspeakers out there if you are willing to spend considerably more for them that is.

Strength:

Tremendous sound stage. Clear, sweet and tight sounding. Easy on the eyes. Great value.

Weakness:

Could be a bit taller.

I've had these speakers for about 7 months, to summed it up in one word "SWEETTT!". Unlike some speakers that wear you down after a few hours of listening, you can listen to these babies all day without feeling any fatique. They are truly a pleasure to listen to. Kinda of addictive. You can hear each vocalist and every instrument distinctively. Clear and well defined. I'm hearing notes and instruments in familiar recordings that I didn't know were there. I chose these over the Paradigm Monitor 9 which had really tight bass but did not have quite the same balance between the high/med/lows as the 5's.

They don't get that way overnight, there's an unusually long break-in period. It might have taken 100+ hours to bring them up to peak performance. I was having doubts at first but I'm now convinced that I made the right decision.

I have the Silver 5Ti, which has the easy to remove tweeter protective covers and improved internal wiring. I just removed the covers and installed the spikes. Did not find the need to mass load them.

I paid about $800. In my opinion, they perform as well if not better than some speakers selling close to $1500. I have read in some reviews of them sounding bright but I think it might be caused by the type of receiver driving them. They appear to be well balanced in respect to highs, med and lows. I am using the following equipment:

Yamaha RX-V995
Pansonic K510 DVD Player
Denon DCD-1420 CD Player
Infinity CC-3 Center Speaker
Energy eXL-16 Surround Speakers
Energy eXL-S12 Subwoofer

Hope to add the Silver Centre.
