Monitor Audio Gold Reference 10 Floorstanding Speakers

Monitor Audio Gold Reference 10 Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

A true reference class stand-mounting speaker, the Gold Reference 10 uses one RSTâ„¢ bass-mid driver and the new gold C-CAMâ„¢ tweeter developed specially for the Gold Reference Series. It has been designed to give the most accurate performance possible. The GR 10 is capable of pinpoint imaging and tonal accuracy to rival the best reference studio monitors. Yet it's equally at home when used in a multi-channel audio or cinema system. As part of a Gold Reference speaker array, accurate tonal matching means it integrates perfectly.

Strength:

Good stereo imagery, well defined bass, midrange and trebles, musical and finally a nice rosemah finish.

Weakness:

I can't really think of any.

Originally I had a pair of Monitor Audio Silver 4i's and I have always thought they were musical and had a nice midrange and treble. However, I always thought the bass presence wasn't enough. I decided to audition the the Monitor Gold Reference 10 as a potential replacement, additionally I had to hand some Proac Tablette 2000 speakers. System Setup: Primare A20 MKII amp Primare D20 cd Nakamichi DR10 tape deck VdH D103 interconnects AudioQuest Bedrock bi-wire cables. Atacama SE24 stands Initial impressions of the GR10 were impressive, the depth of bass was immediately more apparent compared to the GR10, and I felt it had more authority compared to the Proacs. However, I decided to let the speakers burn in for over one week before some serious listening. The GR10 must be described as a very forward sounding speaker which handles everything one can throw at it. The bass is deep for the size of the speaker, and the midrange trebles are very clear. Playing vocal music through the speakers shows the pedigree of the stereo imagery which surpasses the proacs and my former MA Silver 4is. I must say the speak suits classical music quite well too, instruments are portrayed in a realistic manner, one can distinguish and locate where the instrument is in the stereo image.

Strength:

Imaging, transparency, excellent mid and top end without being harsh. Also, good bass response for a bookshelf. Beautiful rose mahogany finish.

Weakness:

Can''''t think of one.

I''''ve only had these a few months but so far I''''m thrilled. I wanted to replace my NHT 1.5''''s with something new. I had a pretty tough time since I liked my 1.5''''s so much. I brought my NHT''''s to my local dealer to do an A-B comparison with the GR 10''''s for about 1 hour. I first listened to the 10''''s and thought they sounded wonderful but I''''ve always liked what I heard at home with my 1.5''''s also. Then, I switched out the 10''''s with my 1.5''''s. Now, the difference between the two became very apparent. I varied the volume throughout my listening tests to be sure that I wasn''''t simply preferring the louder speaker. The 10''''s imaged and disappeared into the room so much better than the 1.5''''s which are certainly no slouch. All in all, highly recommended. Dan Kaps www.heartlandcables.com

Strength:

Imaging, open soundstage. Build quality.

Weakness:

Buggered if I can think of one.

Bought in September 2001.
It took a while, but eventually I got these run in. I knew when I was getting close to them being fully run in, when I started to laugh. Yes - they make me laugh.
I'm hearing things.
The GR10's appear to have sneaked up to my record collection and put extra stuff on each track when I wasn't looking.
Its amazing, some pieces of music I thought knew well, I now realise I hardly knew at all. These speakers can unravel the densest mixes, wave all the individual strands in front of your face, and say "there you are mate, thats what its s'posed to sound like!"
Top end is sweet, and extremely detailed. Mid range is frightening, and bottom end goes as low as a speaker of this size could be reasonably expected to do.
The usual caveats apply (I've never used the word caveat before, I hope it really exists), decent partnering equipment is essential. I'm using a Cyrus CD player and bi amping with Cyrus amps, to great effect.
The Monitor Audios are very easy to drive, and I reckon the Morris Minor driving, Morris dancing, valve amp officianados (no offence), will love them.

PS The protective grill over the tweeter is a great idea. More speaker manufacturers could do themselves a favour by offering this option.

You name it, and there is a good chance I've tried it.
