Strength:
I’ve been a Mirage collector and lover for the last 10 years, it’s a shame that they were disbanded due to upper level corporate management incompetence. I own at least one pair of every Mirage speaker worth owning, from the M1’s and M1si’s to the OM-6’s, OM-9’s, Omni 260 & 60’s and even the OMD-28, OMD-C2 and OMD-15’s as well as about everything in between. That being said I feel confident in stating that I’ve listened to every phase of loudspeaker advancement Mirage had throughout their illustrations history (only from the Mirage M1’s and on, I have owned the vintage Mirage 760’s and 260’s but wasn’t impressed) and continued development of their omnipolar technology which still hasn’t been remotely reproduced by anyone in the current market for the last 15 years since Mirage disbanded. That being said the M, Msi and OM series of speakers are exponentially better engineered compared to both generations of Omni towers and bookshelfs which although interesting and developed during substantial NRCC R&D sessions, were a compromise from the drawing board. Andrew Welker even stated that with the Mirage Omni 260, 250, 50, 60 and CCB1 they wanted to bring an entry level, affordable omnipolar loudspeaker to market which forced them to scrap their previous 5 or so generations of speakers which used both front and rear firing arrays phase and time aligned and were always mounted to a shallow baffle to minimize any nulls or comb filtering and maximize off and on axis performance. Obviously doubling the drivers in a speaker increases costs and it’s unfortunate this isn’t a design that’s currently being even remotely considered by any company. Weakness:
Compared to competing speakers with integrated powered subwoofer arrays, the Mirage’s are both understated and attractive with speaker placement being slightly less critical however one should give them 18”-48” from their front wall and 24”-72” from the side wall (your results may vary), also the age old adage of adding absorption to your 1st reflection points as well as any acoustical treatment type standards from that bygone era should be ignored. If you’re not running a recording studio you want those reflections, realistically most rooms require a moderate mix of diffusion (both 2D and 3D) as well as absorption. That being said that’s a whole different worm hole and I highly suggest you don’t attempt it without knowing what you’re doing, otherwise you’ll be wasting money and possibly reducing your overall performance. Placed in my room that has an RT60 decay of 405ms, quadratic diffusion, about 15% absorption and floor to ceiling Auralex bass traps the OM-6’s are almost ruler flat above the room transition frequency (200hz-20,000hz) and using REW I created a series of PEQ filters which I imported into my Audyssey MultiEQ-X limited range correction calibration. Being sealed 8” drivers it’s impressive they have meaningful output down to below 25hz without any audible driver break up. The midrange is quite neutral while the high frequencies are phenomenal, in my opinion the Mirage PTH tweeter is one of the best high frequency transducers ever created. Price Paid: 2000

Strength:
I compose music for a huge dynamic range (brass ensembles, strings, organ, choir) and this set is like being in the room with any combination I compose for - all the way down to a 32ft organ reed. The sound is tight, the crossovers are.... wait. There are crossovers? The subwoofer delivers the roar of window-rattling low reed with pitch, fundamental, timbre, and the characteristic labial transients. A pair of violins with a flute - all in ledger lines far above the treble clef - ar clear as crystal. Weakness:
Big. Heavy. Wouldn't have it any other way. : ) Price Paid: 450.00

Strength:
3-D, "live" sound, flexibility with crappy room acoustics
Weakness:
Large size, odd shape, subwoofer won't break windows I have an oddly-shaped room which is not kind to placement-sensitive speakers. I had a pair of AR's, and a pair of Sonus Fabers. The OM-6's are wonderful - they sound great with CD music, but they really shine in 5.1-channel surround - they make the sound come from the whole front of the room, instead of two "points" of sound. I like the high end - very gentle - not quite as silky as a Sonus Faber, but not at all metallic like some others. Similar Products Used: Definitive BP-2000 |

The sound is out of this world. Fantastic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Weakness:
Manual does not explain all the features in detail. During live concerts it is like being at the concert. Music cd are for the lock of words perfect. The movies are much more real than going to the movie theater. I love these speakers. The center channel has to the best center channel ever made. Similar Products Used: Def technology , BW, Snell |

After using a pair of Bose 901's for 12 years I thought it was time for an upgrade. After reading the reviews on this site and other newsgroups as well as countless stereo magazines I thought I knew what to look for. Living in a small city there were very few choices to actually audition quality lines. I first auditioned Def Tech BP2000TL-based on the ads I thought surely this would be a must have-wrong--I then auditioned the Mirage OM6 and was dumbfounded at the difference. The bass was more defined and not muddy. This speaker cannot be classified just for home theatre-It has made my CD collection come to life. If you are in the $2000-$3000 range this speaker is hard to beat. |
