Strength:

Hyper-detailed, quick, and so musical

Weakness:

Didn't happen across them sooner

Can't say much about these that hasn't been already said. They are as good as every-one on this site has said. Great pace, great sound, they make me smile. I've had the new Ninka at my home for the last few days and found that they are also very good, yet not as much fun to listen to as the Tucan(I've ordered the Keosas, but they won't be here for a few more days). I have my Tucans bi-amped with B&K 2140's(140 watts per @ 8 ohms),with an Adcom GCD-750 as my source. These speakers sing a beautiful song. I also purchased Sonus Faber Concertinos at the same time, no way to compare the two. The Tucans make the Sonus' sound like little toys. I love these speakers, I don't say that very often.

I had originally planned to buy a pair of Linn Kan speakers to go with a NAD L40 CD/tuner/amp box for my new bedroom system. However, the local dealer (see below) had a pair of Tukans with cosmetic shipping damage for $500, so I went with them instead. Nordost Solar Wind bi-wire cables complete the package.

I am very happy with the results. The speakers are very "Linn" in the sound, good for vocals, but more natural sounding than what B&W offers for the same (or more) $$, IMHO. Perhaps a little bright for my tastes (Main speakers are Vandy 2Ce, soon to upgraded to signatures), but there is supposedly a tweeter level adjustment.

The bass is indeed very good for a bookshelf speaker without being boomy or "Bose"y. Ideal placement seems to be on a stone dresser top/shelf.

The unit is solidly built with nice bannana plug terminals on the back. Note that the terminal spacing is wider than what you find on a lot of speakers, so some monowire cables with fixed spacing plugs might have some problems.

This speaker also performed very well in the main listening room driven by an Arcam 9 integrated.

Verdict: A very good unit, but a little pricey if you have to pay MSRP.

(Dealer note: I highly recommend The Audio Gallery of Lake Oswego, OR. Nice people, nice store, excellent service.)

I don't know how what words to use, if there are any suitable ones. These real small speakers sound as if they were floorstanding. They have punch, they can handle lots of power and they can play very very loud without breaking a sweat. When I first heard them my response, aswell as my friend's, was "you have gotta be kidding me! Remove the subwoofer.". Of course there was no sub present. They present a sound that killed all of my illusions about how a larger speaker should be better. They even outperformed the Keilidhs that, having more bass though, did not have the punch of the Tukan. For a dedicated listening room, I´d still go with NHT 2.5i, but for a livingroom there's not a doubt in my mind. Throw these all the way back up against the wall, just make sure there's enough width between them, and you've got a livingroom capable of volumes you couldn't dream of with speakers this size, and you won't have sacrificed almost any floor space at all. Crisp highs, pleasant mids, punchy bass, handles high volumes with ease, takes no place, outperforms every speaker in it's price range (including floor standing ones). I'm getting a pair of these instead of the NHT's I was previously planning to buy. They're truly a bargain even at retail price. Go listen to them dammit! 5 stars, considering them to the best livingroom speakers you could buy. The sweet spot is quite large also, no problem being 2 or 3 people listening to them at the same time even in a modest sized room. For a dedicated listening room I would pay the extra bucks to get the NHT's (not the Keilidhs).

Strength:

Accuracy, sound stage, value.

Weakness:

Considering their price, none.

I have been listening to an all LINN system using an LK85, a Wakonda and Mimik CD player with Keiledh passive speakers for about one year. I've got LINN cable and connectors as well.

Very recently I purchased the new (tuner included) Classik with a pair of Tukans for my office. I recommend auditioning the kans, and then the Tukans -- there is truly a big difference between the two.

Once I got the new sytem in my (at home) office set-up, I was very quickly surprised by the sharpness of these speakers over the Keilidhs. I find the separation, detail, liveliness and soundstage of the Tukans stand out and above their larger floor standing brothers. They seem to be more accurate speakers, though they are several hundred dollars less. Perhaps this is just first impression...

They don't have the full range that the larger speakers do, of course, but can a small "bookshelf-style" speaker ever attain this?

Ironically, despite not having the lower end punch of the larger Keilidhs, I am beginning to question whether the larger speaker's are actually reproducing the original music with as much fidelity as the Tukans are...

I am thoroughly enjoying my recent investment. The speakers are bi-wired, and I am using them with Sound Organisation stands, filled with simple, white sand.

Am I supposed to notice how they look? Does this matter? Yes, I think it does. The speakers are very sharp. I purchased the cherry and the smell of the natural wood is still lingering in my office, these speaker are still that new!

I feel there is considerable value in these speakers, and I expect to enjoy them for quite some time. By the way, I am mostly listening to vocal music, classical piano, cello and choral. Sweet. Very sweet.

I am now wondering what a home with two or three sets of Classiks and Tukans would be like. Though, I'm more likely to want to get another LK85 and listen to these gems active in my other system. Thank-you.

Superb crafsmanship, very versitile.

These are the most accurate and meliflous speaker I have ever had the pleasure of listening to, let alone have the privelige to own. They simply sound great. I had a somewhat difficult time finding the right sounding place for them in what had found to be a bright sounding room. But once I found that sweet spot (it took some doing)it was worth it! Once you start listening you just don't want to stop. The rest of the setup is made up of a Majik-1 integrated, a karik/Numerik transport/D/A converter. The Tuk's are bi-wired and I can't wait to take them active!

I haven't seen anyone review these speakers in their active mode, so I felt compelled to do so. I am using a Linn tunebox to house the active modules, and am driving the speakers with 2 McCormack o.5 amplifiers in biamped mode. The source is a Wadia 830 cd player connected directly to the tune box without a preamp. The speakers in this configuration are absolutely incredible. The have an extremely wide and deep soundstage and are very accurate. You cannot believe that you are listening to such a small speaker. I have had other larger more expensive speakers in my system, but nothing has ever sounded this good.

Strength:

Reputation, build quality, beautiful sound.

Weakness:

"Whoa Nellie!" price. Not enough choices on finish.

It's not often that listening to a very familiar piece of music raises the hair on my arms and brings tears to my eyes. That's what happened when my wife and I auditioned these little gems. We've been looking for a new pair of speakers for about three months, and using the same songs, over and over and over and over. . .well, you get the picture. What can we get for under 1K? What are the comromises? How painful will they be to live with? Thanks to Linn, few comromises, and very little pain.

Back to the opening statement. "Spiritual," from Johnny Cash's "Unchained," is a moving song. Through the Tukan's, it was as if he was in the room, pouring out all the hurt and pain right there in front of us. The guitar, the piano, and that voice were TACTILE. As Mr Cash moved into the third verse, we could hear his emotional connection to the words -- words he's lived -- and seemed to be singing right there. We were shocked. Sure, in a mega-buck pair speakers we expected the thrill. But in these little things? Top notch.

Only one caveat: The salesman coutioned, and we agree, anything larger than a mid-sized room will ask too much of the Tukans. Thanks Ivor.

Strength:

The Tukans have great clarity and considering their size, deliver more than I'd expect from bookshelf speakers.

Weakness:

Tried them out with my old Pioneer system and found them too bright. Suggest you look at an all Linn system.

Despite their size, they deliver clear, concise sound from my Linn Classik system. I have them bi-wired and expect that has something to do with it. I'm excited about upgrading them with a Wakonda, Genki and LK-85. Overall, I find them a continuing surprise. I'd never expect the quality, full range and clarity from such small bookshelf speakers.

Strength:

musical, detailed, great soundstage, easy placement...easyly mates with SUB

Weakness:

bassshy...

I would "echoe" the previous reviewer on this great spekers. I owned them more than 3 years, and several time i looked to find something better. But, i have to say that there isn't much outhere, that will sound so much better than Tukan. This is the "bold" statement, but i stand behind it. For the, price vs performance, they are Linn's best speakers! Mated with small sub, like Velodyne -VA-86(rare little SuB, designed specialy for audio not HT)will give you performance of the full range speakers costing 2-3K Guaranteed! If you are in search for speakers that will constantly amaze you. Look no futher!

Strength:

Exceptional imaging and vocal reproduction

Weakness:

No real weaknesses

I would say these are the only monitors approaching the incomparable LS3/5a. They deserve a 4 for value and performance with the LS3/5a still deserving the title with a 5/5 rating.
