Klipsch RF-7 Floorstanding Speakers

Klipsch RF-7 Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

The RF-7 Reference Series flagship loudspeaker was designed to provide the highest level of two-channel and multi-channel audio as well as home theater surround sound (with the matching RC-7 center channel, RSW-15 subwoofer and RS-7 rear channel speakers), but its striking metal drivers and real-wood enclosure also make it a desirable complement to any decor. Available in three beautiful furniture-grade veneers — black, maple or cherry — each handcrafted, real-wood finish is unique.
The RF-7 utilizes a combination of professional grade materials and advanced horn technology for a smooth response and consistent coverage pattern. The new Reference Series flagship’s 1.75" titanium dome compression driver is coupled to an 8" square Tractrix® Horn and powered by an unusually large, video-shielded 22oz. magnet. This combination offers the speed and accuracy needed to deliver clear, accurate, non-fatiguing high frequencies and upper midrange frequencies at any volume level. This design approach is so efficient that it virtually eliminates the most common cause of driver failure — excessive energy.

Bought those speakers from the abovementioned retailer which had them on a sell off buynow in eBay, the order was being held rapidly and carefully by pro Vince.
Speakers were shipped double protected(one's internal box) using UPS and arrived in a perfect condition. My setup consist of a NAD C320BEE reciever with the matching CD player (C521BEE) and also a Squeezebox for streaming. All RCA cabling is due to Monster, speaker wire is Monster's XPHP 10ft (not bi-wire) with pin terminals on both ends. The sounds that comes out of those speaker is unbelievably enjoyable for any music enthusiastic listenner. Dont expect to get even close to their true sound before a 20-30 hrs break-in period. The cherry cabinet looks very good and smooth, made off high quality wood vinyl over MDF. Their sound cover the room with lively sound like no other bookshelf theoretically can (had a pair of RB5II & RW12 sub before - non comparable). Even in low volumes, bass and upper bass is enjoyable. The bigger the room, the higher the volume - the better. They magnify the sound so greatly that you'll hear pianists fingers touch on the piano (Gonzales' Solo Piano, 2nd track). Some reviews complaint about their plastic feet - I find them convinient and cant think of anything better. They help those big speakers remain stable and kill feedback sideffects thanks to the rubber-based tiny pins you screw thruogh the plastics. The terminals 5way bind positings are all bi-wireable of course, I haven't checked it in bi-wire mode yet, but the shortcut between HF and LF is made by a Monster cable (not a rigid patch) which is included. Those who I can think of that may not support my recommendation are dull british conservative listenners who like dull sound speakers (e.g. paradigm) or even some B&W brands. Well, let 'em remain dull and stick to their Beatles records. Although sound is objective, I didnt audtion those speakers before I bought them! I actually bet on those after auditionning a lot of speakers that I didnt wow from. (B&W, Dali and more) but audioreview's reviewers were correct! those are the best floorstanding speaker I've ever heard and I'm settled for the next 5-10 years now.

As with whiskey Tennesee's Jack Daniel's which is a bit sweeter than conservative same-level Irish scotch - at my opinion and taste, Arkanssas's Klipsch has proved that great (if not best) speakers can be manufactured and invented outside Great Britian.

Nothing.

I bought those speakers from the above mentioned retailer without pre auditioning them whatsoever(!), only glimpsed their taste-alike bookshelf cousines - the rb-5II's. Although I auditioned all of the popular speaker brands (B&W, Dali, Kef, and more) and couldn't get a wow, I made the bet and bought those from that very fast and professional retailer. Man, a true audiophile will always say no speaker is perfect - but those.... are a very good approximation of such. They are for enthusiastic music listeners and not for dulled old fashioned british audiophiles whom will argue that. Well, #$%$'em... let them stick with their boring monotone speakers and their beatles records. Those are very live... they magnify the audio signal like never heard before. Vocals, mid, upper bass and bass are perfet. Their sensetivity is their keypoint, driven by _any_ amplifier, just make it low noise distortion - nothing more thant this. I'm using a budget NAD c320bee - but this combo is so well placed that I doubt any other setup will wow me, at any price, given my room measures. I've finished my journey into stereo until the next revolution - I encourage people to try and get those as soon as possible before they become vintage. Dont believe to any review you read - including this, go and audition (or bet)

Strength:

The best things about the Ref 7's are the punch and detail and realness they provide to the music. They hide nothing and play effortlessly. Even when I am playing a concert dvd at concert levels in my 20x24' room they do not get hash or distort.

Weakness:

You have to be very careful when picking an amp or receiver with Kilpsch speakers. They will revel everyhting good and bad about your system. Try and pick neutral and warm sounding gear and you will be fine. I have used Pioneer Elite and Rotel receivers with these Klipsch and they really sound great. Also the McIntosh amps work extremely well with Klipsch.

I have had these speakers as part of my 7.1 HT systme since October 2004 and they have never let me down and have impressed everyone that has heard them. Even audiophile snobs have been impressed saying I did not know Klipsch sounded so good. I am powering these Klipsch Ref 7's with McIntosh amps and McIntosh a/v pre/pro.

Customer Service

I have never had a problem with Klipsch speakers so I do not know how there customer service department is. However I have stopped by the Hope Arkansas plant and they were extremely hosptial towards me and gave a tour.

Strength:

Broad soundstage. Realistic Bass.

Weakness:

NO weakness in how they sound.
However they are HEAVY as you would expect for $1000+ speakers. You better get your friends to help when they arrive or you will get a hernia.
The plastic feet look kind of cheap so take care with moving the speakers around.

The RF7's were the speakers that I wanted originally back in 2001 but couldnt afford them. So, I settled for the RF3's that have served me well for the last 6 years and have now been passed down to my daughter.
I am VERY pleased with my new RF7's and they sound awesome. The RF3's sounded good too but you can definetly tell a big difference in the two.
The sound stage is bigger on the 7's and the bass is more lifelike and less boxy sounding than the 3's. However for the $$ difference they should sound better and they do.
They are now blowing these things out on ebay for half of what they cost new and I definetly suggest upgrading while you can. I got mine brand new in the factory sealed box with all the serial numbers, paperwork and warranty cards. It was definely worth the wait for the RF7's and I have bought my last pair of speakers!

Strength:

Full sound stage. Great efficiency and response. Don't need a 250watt RMS amp to push these things. Look great with grills off and on.

Weakness:

Grill prongs are weak and a very poor design. Feet are plastic and look very cheap. Very large and heavy (90lbs each). Treble highs are high, but can simply be adjusted through your receiver or preamp.

I've had these speakers for about 6months now and after the break in period, I'm very pleased. I auditioned these speakers a few times prior to buying them and was excited when I finally heard Klipsch was discontinuing them. (because of the price breaks!!) So I found an authorized dealer who slashed the prices. Sound preferences and reviews are just that and just as no two minds are the same no two set of ears are the same. That being said, I'll start my review.

I auditioned countless speakers before finally landing on these. I listened to all makes and models up to the $4000 (pair) range. I can remember a sale person pushing me to buy the B&W 800 series speakers. Side by side I'd take the Klipsch RF7 in a heart beat. It very difficult to put into words "sound", but my best attempt would be to say that these speakers have PRESENCE and a SOUNDSTAGE. They truely fill the room and bring you into what you're listening to. I didn't find that with speakers twice as expensive. I'm so tired of hearing the old sale's person pitch, "well you really need a sub to fill out the speakers and they will sound totally different". I've had great mid sized speakers with a great sub and it's just not the same as a great set of fronts. I'm not taking away the importance of a sub. I believe they are needed, but if you want a EXPERIENCE with your music rather than listening to it, you need a great set of fronts to start with. And that's what the RF7 deliver. The bass is deep and tight, the horn is crystal clear (a very little bit bright for me) and captures the full sound of the recording. I went through a number of speakers over the past 15 years and I've finally landed on something I'm in love with. My last set was a pair of Klipsch RF3 fronts with a SPL 2000watt velodyne sub. These speakers side by side would make you laugh at the difference. If you love listening to live music, couple of words of advice, PREPARE YOURSELF. You WILL be blown away. These speakers are sure to be a fan favorite for a long time and will command a fair resale value. Gone by the way side like the KLF 20/30, the RF7 will always be sought after especially given that Klipsch no longer produces fronts with larger than a 8" speakers.

Excellent sound imaging, great through the entire sound spectrum, theyve handled everything Ive thrown at them......even bass cds turned way the hell up.

Weakness:

Large and heavy

Pretty much everything has already been said about these speakers. Just to add to what others have said, it is very true about the weak recordings and how these speakers will expose the flaws(the album that first comes to mind is The best of Lynyrd Skynyrd). However, you listen to an album like Michael Jacksons Thriller and it sounds amazing to point where you keep turning up the volume. As along as you go with decent to good equipment (ie-good wiring, good reciever, good cd player) you will not be disappointed.
