PRICE PAID $460 (australia)

SUMMARY; just another pair of speakers?.....no,not even close!

these are so dynamic with all types of music...
so easy to drive, sound good at all volumes.....
have listened to lots of speakers over the last 20 yrs and this is the first pair of
Klipsch i've heard and doubt that i could buy a speaker that would touch these under $1000
these may not be perfect in every sense to some looking for polite speakers.....
highs, mids, and bottom end all excellent! ....but they are so enjoyable!
they have that vibe that makes listening to music fun!
they sound excellent with vinyl also and as for home theatre these don't need no sub as they are just mad speakers!!
i have mine hooked up to a yamaha ax-592 2 channel 100 watt amp and am impressed!
if i had to compare these speakers i would say when i had b&w 602 s2/s3 i loved that bass and quality but the tweeter would get a bit bright and never thought i'd fine something better/different at this price but these are one step beyond the 602's...((((deeper bass))))
better top end,and just as punchy!
midrange maybe a little better on the b&w's.....but nothing to dramatic!
i do love those b&w's but would i swap these kg4's for em?......no way!!
sonic heaven is a lovely place................................................................................................................................

Definitely the best speaker I have ever heard for what I paid for them. I have two pair Piano Black and Oiled Oak. If they don't sound good to you. You probably have them hooked up to the wrong equipment, or have the wrong placement. They are absolutely fantastic speakers. There are better speakers but they cost a lot more money.

These Klipsch Classic KG4 are IMHO the best "performance per dollar" speaker ever made regardless of the name brand. Best budget speakers money can buy.

My 1st pair were purchsed when I was in high school and I kept them for about 4 years of very hard abuse (college dorm parties). Sold them to a friend and always wished I had kept them.

Recently via a trade I got my 2nd pair to use in my modest 2-channel rig. They replaced a set of Polk Audio SDA-2B's. The KG4's perform better in some area's while the SDA's perform better in other area's of the sound spectrum. The SDA's have better low end bass, better imaging and more sound depth. I think the KG4's have more detail, better midrange, more versitility with room placement and less listening fatigue. I can listen to the KG4's for hours and they remain smooth as silk. Both are great budget speakers.

I currently power the KG4 speakers with an older NAD 317 integrated amp and it pushes these 4 ohm Klipsch without ever breaking a sweat. Very nice combo.

They also can be refinished to look new with some light sanding and a few coats of stain/poly.

***Note that the horns in this model are not harsh like some horn speakers I have heard. Very detailed and smooth horn.***

Great job Klipsch with this classic speaker made in the USA!

Strength:

A balanced dynamic speaker. High highs, powerful bass and crystal clear midrange.

Weakness:

None that I can hear.

I just bought my second pair of KG-4's. This pair is used. I bought the same model in 1989 brand new. I guess after almost 2 decades, they are still my favorite speaker. I did own a new pair of Belle Klipsch. I hate them. No bass, no highs, and a screaming midrange. I don't care how expensive they were.

Customer Service

Excellant.

I recieved these speakers from a friend who was cleaning out his rental property. The speakers were in ver good condition, and appeared to be used very little. I knew Klipsch speakers were of good quality but since I already had a nice speaker system in my home I decided to use the KG-4's in my garage. After a few months listening to them in my garage the sound quality was so great I decided to move them inside for a comparision. To make a long story short the Klipsch KG-4's are never to go back into the garage!

Strength:

Great sound with tube amps.
American quality construction
Can fill a LARGE room with quality sound

Weakness:

One could be deceived as to the quality of these speakers with very good SS amps. These speakers are GREAT with valves. Krells, ML's, Brystons, Mcormacks ect. would sound good too. But a good $300 tube amp will make these speakers sing.

The Kg 4 is special. I bought these speakers because they were local and thought I would give them a try. If I did not like them, I was sure I could get my money back. Hooked them up to a Adcom 545 and a Hafler DH-500 (Adcom GFA-1 preamp)and was not impressed. Before starting my ebay strategy, I decided to try them with my Heathkit AA-151. WOW. These speakers are valve speakers. Please dont judge these speakers until you use them with a tube amp.

Strength:

Punchy clean and tight Bass
Fluid highs
depth is outstanding
great craftmanship
very,very efficient

Weakness:

can reveal bad recordings in all their horror!
mid highs can sound a little harsh
heavy and big.

I purchased these last week when I spied them at a second hand store. After some internet research I figured that 200$ for a minty set in oiled oak was worth a try.I am running them with a 1979 HH Scott 380R@ 85 wpc, and a Yamaha early 90s cd player.I have owned Polks, and my mains previously were HH Scott 186B large bookshelf speakers circa 1978. I have always loved the Scotts, but I have to say that the KG4s at times sound much nicer.. I say at times ,because depending on the music..or could it be the recording??, they either sound amazing or a little harsh and in need of a good eq...Which I have also.Bass is outstanding, punchy, tight, fluid.High end is fantastic, you can actually hear the brushes slide across the cymbals, texture, depth, amazing clarity. Mids can be great or sound a little harsh. But as I said ,it could be substandard recordings as when I play hi-end recordings they always sound great. I have not yet hooked up my turntable to try out the master recordings.
Fit and finish are like fine furniture, pure quality. A little lemon oil and the grain on the oak came right back to life.
Oh yeah...they get very loud with little power. I can't get past 10 on my amp before they are just too loud! I may have to dig out my tubes to hear if they make a big difference. Good clean power as low as 25-40wpc should easily be able to handle the task...Clean being well under .1%...My Scott runs at rated at .03THD. Sounds nice. When I get my old bookshelves re-coned I'll have to give them a good comparo.I am happy with my purchase.

Strength:

FANTASTIC HIGHS FROM THE KLIPSCH HORN DOME DESIGN TWEETER. DEEP RICH SMOOTH BASS FROM THE POLYMER CONE 8" TWIN WOOFER SYSTEM AND THE 12" PASSIVE RADIATOR, WHICH ALSO DOUBLES AS A PORT..

Weakness:

NOTHING, EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THEY DON`T MAKE THEM ANYMORE.

THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE AND RATE THESE SPEAKERS IS THE FOLLOWING. IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO DUPLICATE MUSIC THE WAY LIVE MUSICIANS PERFORM IT, THEN THESE BABIES ARE FOR YOU. I HAVE HAD THESE SINCE BRAND NEW IN 1988 AND THEY ARE STILL GOING STRONG. WHETHER IT IS MUSIC LISTSENING OR DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 SURROUND THEY WILL NOT DISSAPOINT.

Strength:

Good LF response, smooth highs. Great fit and finish.

Weakness:

The rear passive radiators may be a bit fragile if you don't keep their exposure in mind when moving. After 20+ years the front grilles aren't retained as well as they were when new.

I bought these brand new for $420 and they've been w/me ever since. I'm quite happy with them after all these years, despite having auditioned many other brands and models.

The KG4s sound great with or without a subwoofer. The dual 8" LF drivers and 12" PR produce fine bass on their own, but if you do use a sub be sure to set the crossover frequency very low (mine is set to 40Hz).

The 2X6 horn tweeter isn't "harsh" at all - it is smooth, detailed, and simply sounds great.

Cabinets are top notch, finish is great (even after many moves and more years). Stands/risers are built in. Tweeters are at ear level (for me) when seated. The 5 way binding posts work fine.

To be totally honest, I've never listened to the speakers w/any solid state gear, so I can't really comment on their perfornamce w/transistors. With my old Dynakit Mk III amps, they sound great.

I'm happy w/them and always have been. Would I trade for a set of Heresey's? Sure, but that isn't likely to happen.

Customer Service

Fantastic. When I first got these speakers, I had a problem where 2 voice coils separated from their cones - this produced a rattle sound. Not only did Klipsch and my dealer replace the damaged drivers for free - they replaced the other 2 that had not shown any signs of failure. How's that for service?

Strength:

Clarity throughout the rated frequency spectrum (38Hz-20KHz), durability, looks, precise and punchy bass, clear highs.

Weakness:

I only have one pair.

They can have my KG-4's when they pry them from my cold, dead fingers! I will NEVER part with them.

I got my KG-4's way back in 1985. I've moved many times over the years, and the KG-4's are still going strong. Warm, smooth, tight, and always eager for more volume.

If you can find them, buy them, and don't let 'em out of your sight!
