KLH 9154 decent speakers can perform even better (they won't bring you 300w) but u need to give them some love, box must be proper glued i used glue for wood, especially on back side also when i opened the box there were no damping material of any kind inside the box i used damping spunge on all sides but not on front..they are reborn ..if u have time it's worth it..

I have the 915B speakers, which I understand to have the same drivers as the 9154 but a sealed (rather than ported) enclosure. I paid $40/pair used. The 915B speakers have unbelievably good sound, even compared to my well-beloved, 3-way, Design Acoustics PS-10a speakers, which boast 45Hz lows. I usually listen to classical music at low volumes (3-10 watts) through a vintage 150-w/ch Kenwood KC-207/KA-207 amplifier. The 15" woofer on the 915B is good down to 20Hz (and probably lower), and it really brings out the low resonances in the tuba and classical guitar that are simply lacking in even a good 10" woofer. My first sound test, listening to Mozart's Magic Flute Overture as rendered by the 5-piece English Brass Ensemble, literally brought tears to my eyes. It was the difference between sitting in the back of the church (which is excellent in itself) versus sitting up front with the musicians. LIttle equalization is needed across all frequencies. I'm delighted with these speakers!

Casual Listener

Strength:

Loud. That's about it.

Weakness:

Poor cabinet construction with lots of resonance. Can't handle what KLH says they can. 4 way? Struggle to make it to the 3rd way.

I bought these speakers on clearance in 1999... one for $60 and one for $90. The style of music you listen to will greatly effect what you think of these speakers. KLH targeted the "starving college student" market and their prices reflect it. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. I've run these speakers through two receivers. An Awia 120 watt and a Sony 80 watt. I'll agree with the previous reviewers, these speakers can not handle 300 watts. You can't even go off the rule that they'd be able to handle 150 watts RMS. These speakers caused my Awia to overload many times and actually damaged the board in the receiver. Granted, I listen to stuff with a fair amount of bass (Carcass... Cryptopsy... Soilwork) and I listened to it fairly loud. These speakers lack any sort of clarity at any level, but they will play things loud for cheap if you can pair it with a reciever that will work well with them. 80 watts seems about optimal. After owning these for about a year, I bought another cheap item from KLH, their 100 watt powered sub. Using the sub to take some of the lower bass off of the 15" of the 9154 allowed it to sound just a little bit better. I'm thinking this is because the box the speakers are in has all kind of resonance and clouds up the sound you're hearing. I'm no audio expert, but this is how it's been explained to me in the past. I read the line below that you'd be better off with some Cerwin's, but that's only if you can afford them. The standard "Starving Student" can't. I paid for both of the KLH's what I would have paid for 1 Cerwin Vega at the time and I got a good 5 years out of em before they started to pay the price for the beating I've been giving them (blown the low-mid in one of them). If you're looking for loud plus cheap and you spot these at a garage sale for $50, you won't be dissapointed. If you're looking for quality AND loud AND cheap, this isn't it. You get what you pay for.

Strength:

$$PRICE$$

Weakness:

tweeters, subs, crossovers, mids are decent. these arent durable at all.

These things arent as good as everyone makes them out to be. 300 watts!?!?!? Im sure thats the peak but it would only be able to hold it for like a second. These things have a hard time carrying 50 watts rms. All 4 tweets gone within the first 4 months. Radio shack tweets took the romping alot better than the klh's. Boxes are very poor. Subs havent blown yet but are very weak and loose.Ive known many people to purchase these speakers and they are crap. I am the only one out of all the people i know who bought some to still have mine.yes they are cheap but for the extra money you can pick up a pair of cerwins that will last you alot longer.of course if u dont beat on speakers then they will last but if u dont listen to loud music then why are u getting big speakers?

Strength:

heart-stopping bass, ear bleeding highs, and smooth flowinn mids, but even when maxed out distortion is not even a possibility

a must have for any guy that likes movies, heavy metal & / or rap/r&b, because the sound is amazing, for around $100/pr. its impossible to get sound so good anywhere.

Strength:

none

Weakness:

sloppy bass, worst possible imaging, murky mids, cheapo tweeters, 1/2 particle board box that rattles

super SLOW woofer with a microscopic magnet. Seems to crank a surprising amount for how thrashy and bad it's foam/paper cone is. The mid and tweeter are a joke. The super tweeter looks and sounds like one from a cheap coaxial car speaker.
Even those sloppy Cerwin Vegas sound better.

Here is the deal with these speakers: Do you want loud, relatively crisp sound, a 15" sub, and a low price? Then the KLH's are for you. I will never say that I've got the best sounding speakers in the world, but I will say I got the best value.

These speakers serve an important purpose - they give you great sound for a price that competes with small sounding bookshelf units. I come from a manufacturing background and I can tell within a respectable percentage what it cost to build these things. KLH serves to provide a low mark-up speaker that will eventually provide them with a more respected name. It happened with Honda, Toyota, and many other companies.

Let's be honest here - I would bet 9 out of ten of you could not tell the difference between these speakers and some of the Snell or Paradigm, or even the renowned Revel speakers in a blind test. So stop being speaker snobs and realize that instead of looking smart for spending more money - you look like fools for throwing your money away.

I actually tested some Bose 701's with the dual sub setup, and I was tremendously disappointed, they sounded really bad. I mean, an improvement was made by removing the spikes and placing them directly on the floor to help the mid range. That is absolutely absurd in something I had just spent $800 a piece on.

Anyway these are the best value on the market - good sound, low price, and loud output.
