Strength:

Low,mids and highs

Weakness:

None

The S3100 MK 11 speaker sounds smooth. Not the penetrating horn sound. Maybe the neodynium driver N 275 is responsible for this sound character. Placement is rather critical. Placement against walls will work best. Its not a free-standing speaker. Soundstage is excellent. The place where you are listening is not critical.

It is unlikely and sad that most of you will not get to see or hear this fine loudspeaker. Winner of 1995 Japan Golden Award Prize for "Excellent Audio Products", the first ever given to a loudspeaker. Only available as a special order and sold mostly in the orient, it is a dirivitive of the Everest Project of the 1980's. Using a compression driven asymetrical horn from 750hz up and a 15" bass driver in a bass reflex cabinet with a claimed sensitivity of 94db. 45" in hieght and in a asymetrical box these have to be heard. l doubt if you would think they are a horn in terms of tonality, this from someone who has owned Lowthers [terrible tonality} and Quad 57's { great tonality}, that is untill a transient occured at which point you would be quite shocked. Imaging is very good and what else can l say...they just sound oh so right and just like music. Find them if you can. There also is a smaller brother using a 12" bass driver with the same horn.
l am using these with a 811A single ended triode amp. Heaven..will keep these till l die.

This loudspeaker system gives very good stereo image and powerful sounds but, high amplifier power handles required. Good product for classical music...and jazz, rock'n roll music...kill me!!!

Strength:

Great imaging
Powerful tight bass

Weakness:

Compatibility with cheaper amplifiers

Great speaker which I listened to in Japan then purchased in the middle east. The problem is that you MUST have a very hi-end system since these speakers can sound bright on cheaper amps and such. Listened to the speakers on Krell, Accuphase, Mark Levinson and they do the speakers justice. My old amps were ADCOM 565s which were powerful but bright so I am updating them. Will post a further note once I find my final combination. Once played on cheaper electronics the horn takes over and can sound rather harsh. You cannot have them attached to a bright system. This is the perfect speaker for old fashioned tubed amps Cary, Mcintosh, Marantz or hi-end solid state amps with that classic sound. Connected to great electronics is when this speaker really shines. Have been updating my system to match the speaker since I travelled half-way around the world to buy them and bring them home on my ship. Heard with top end electronics it gets 5 stars, but with not so good electronics 3 stars. I imagine that is the problem with some of the reviews. Update the electronics then you will realize what a fine speaker they have purchased. This speaker is huge in Japan and is marketed in that region with a MK11 with the ND275 midrange driver.

SYSTEM:
Nakamichi Dragon Cassette
Thorens TD-125 turntable
Akai 646 Reel
Still updating electronics
