ch side of this fireplace at about the 9 foot mark are two alcoves and there sit my pair of new large advents in bullnosed walnut cabinets, they are unreal, they replaced my infinity QA's, which i have had since 1980....nothing to be sneezed at themselves.....so to make a very long story short..if you see a good pair of lx44's going for 200 or less conditions permitting..surrounds etc..grab them...because they sound clean....yes the new advents have the earthqaucke stuff....but those lx44's do too..they are both keepers.....how do ya spell quacke anyway? sorry i'm not a duck!

wonderful, that's all there is to say. if you have the opportunity to get these babies from anywhere, do it.

in around 1991 or 1992 i was buying my first component system, i was in HS and i was a pretty stupid 16 yr old silly, daddy and i were traveling around and testing out stuff i could afford on my Target salary...and i heard these guys, wow, i wanted, the comparable priced infinitys at best buy were humiliated, i wanted them on the spot...but waited like a week to make up my mind...went bact to the store and they were gone, got told they were discontinued...i was like, really, why? but anyway, i absolutly had to have these speakers, so mommy and daddy ponied up to order them from some place in a magazine...do you have any idea what the postage is on a pair of speakers? me neither, but i bet it was a ton. anyway, got them for about $400 on the pair right around the time jbl stopped making them...

for me, these are the best speakers ever made, i've carried them around to like 3 dorm rooms, 10 apartments, and two houses since i've bought them...they're durable enough to toss around like that...they can get loud, how loud? once when i lived in seattle, there were these guys that lived below me having some garden party playing their dave mathews boring music loud enough to bug me...so i put in some black flag and turned up my stuff as loud as it goes...some rather crappy kenwood receiver, 45 wpc, but whatever, turned it up all the way, and had the speakers in the window blaring down at the neighbors, and went for a walk to see how far away i could hear....about two blocks away i could still hear...then realized, jesus christ, i'm annoying the entire neighborhood and ran home to turn it off.

great speakers. bass heavy a bit even with only 7 inch woofers. beautiful mids. bit pitchy from the tweets. awsome, if you like accuracy, drop the bottom and top a wee bit. great rock n roll speakers. if you like to party, you want these bad boys.

Strength:

LOWS, Mids, compact size with high DB sound,

Weakness:

cabinet looks a little cheap, although I love those titanium tweeters, they can be a bit harsh.

I bought these jewels right when I graduated from college (back in 93)trying to get a smaller system because I was moving accross the country. I thought I was giving up quality in a smaller size speaker but I was pleasantly surprized. I feel they kick the crap outta my old LT100Ts! Great lows for an 8" bass driver. the highs are a bit on the harsh side at times but I feel that the mids more than make up for that shortfall. I have some very expensive (and large) Kliptsch now for my "big" system. But these little babys are in my office pushed by a Carver M-4.0t. I will never get rid of them!

Strength:

Ridiculous bass response. Powerful, clear, shakes room at high volumes.

Weakness:

Treble is muddy at times, but anything will sound bad if the recording is bad (titanium tweeter isn't that good after all). Evidence of messy glue job on the cones that are usually seen on inexpensive speakers (tell me it's not just mine). Cheap fake wood trim comes off easily. I've heard speakers with better separation but that person had a sweet audiophile setup-compared to my cheesy Pyramid P.A. Amp.

I use them mainly as monitors with my DJ setup using just a power amp and the preamp in my mixer. Vinyl sounds amazingly clear through them with little coloration and distortion. Sometimes will hook up a Discman/Minidisc player to play some CDs and even then they sound good. Everything from hip hop to drum n bass sound good through these. Probably about 8 years old, at least.

Strength:

Build quality, cabinet costruction, bass response.

Weakness:

Mid/treble a tad weak.

These were my main studio speakers until I recently upgraded to 4410's. They are now my fronts for the home theater. They are a very good, high quality speaker that was built to last. They can take a lot of power, the the bass output is impressive for an 8" driver in a relatively small box. The tweeter and mid are not as smooth as some of the higher end JBL stuff, but that's to be expected.

Strength:

great clean sound and very good clarity

Weakness:

none that I can think of

I have owned this set of speakers since they first were introduced I believe in 91. They are driven by a H/K reciever and sound provided by a Luxman single disc player.
These are the finest sounding speakers I have heard for the money. Compared them with some 5500 dollar Tancredi hand made speakers and to me there was no comparison. The fullness and richness of the sound eminating from these LX44's is pure and clean. Very good high end and mid range for jazz and classical, and a great thumping base for R&R.
Totally pleased in every way with them. I have also kept he original boxes and the speakers are as new. Can't believe the price of speakers has gone the way it has for such little improvement in sound quality. LX-44's all the way

Strength:

Detail, clearness, power handling. Ease of placement. Astonishing midrange.

Weakness:

Detachable front frame fixing (repaired with a couple of velcro stripes.

They turned my system a pleasant set out of a mediocre one. They really produce clear, detailed music out of vynils, CDs or radio stations. From then I get to tremble when playing Beethoven's 9th choruses, while it is so effortless to distinguish Domingo's voice from Berry's.
And my friends still get pale from envy when they listen to any disc at my home.
Technically, they produce "high resolution" bass, balanced with with just energy enough. Midrange does an almost perfect job, with maximum detail and clarity -very difficult to reach under $1000. Treble hates bad quality recordings, but as a counterpart, it plays incredibly smooth even driven at very high power level.

Strength:

Clarity, JBL bass "punch"

Weakness:

None.

Purchases new ~1991. Still in use. Classic JBL sound......almost as good as the legendary L100 Century. They just don't make them like this any more....

Strength:

Solid JBL bookshelf speaker. Decent lows, awesome mids & highs.

Weakness:

Grille cloth, but ain't they all..........

I have owned these speakers probably a little more than 10 years and they have been outstanding.

The sound would be best described by the word "open." There is very litttle coloration, a typically tight JBL bass, but the mids and highs are simply stunning, and the imaging is top-notch.

This is one of the best speakers for vocals I have ever heard while at the same time having a very "musical" quality and more than capable of performing as a rock speaker if you wish.

I own 5 pairs of JBL's, and I will say out of all of them, the LX44 was the best value.

Put it another way for old JBL hands: the LX44 was the L36 of the 90's.

It's just a great speaker.

I bought these speakers just out of college. The other components of my AV system have changed many times, but the speakers have remained. A friend of mine says - "when are you going to get a sub-wolfer for your Dobly Digital system". My reply - "What do you mean, I have two!".

Tried out the Phantom Menace DVD and you could feel the floor move on the sub channel effects.

I would like to know what people suggest as a well matched center channel to these speakers.
