Strength:

Best for the price. Performs well on all fronts

Weakness:

Sound source appears to be at a lesser height than should be

For the price (on the web) this is an excellent speaker.

Background: Denon AVR-2700 for Amp and Panasonic A110 as DVD/CD player using Optical for DVD and Coaxial for CD. Monster wiring all around. Own this unit since 6 months now. Before these had a pair of Bose speakers followed by HLS615

Music: Listened all types of music including classical and regional. The speaker performs quite admirably. Surpassed my expectations when playing classical music.

Movies: Performs well on all fronts. Especially like the video shielding so can place close to monitor.

Note: Bass effect varies widely based on psotioning. Please experiment with different positions for best bass response.

Feel free to email questions.

Hi folks,I just had to give you an input on these loudspeakers. Me and my dad both bought a pair of these about a month ago, he for playing very old rock and me for playing classic rock. He is an elvis fan and I'm a pink floyd type of guy. We both love these speakers they bring the music to you with a great deal of detail. If you are looking for a speaker that is loud and that will ring your ears DO NOT PUT THESE ON YOUR LIST, but if you would like to hear some good music than at least take a listen.

recently purchased this pair of hls820's and i am very pleased, for movies and TV not sure you can find better, voices and sounds are very accurate and the imaging is excellent. so for Home theater these are as good as i have herd. for music (playing cds ect.) they seem a little bright when you have the trebble increased, but if the trebble is in its normal or default position they sound pretty darn good. The bass is very good and you can really crank these up and maintain the full range with out any manipulation of high or low end.

I just got these speakers in the mail last week and they are overall very nice. The video shielding is great and the bass response is pristine. The highs do not sparkle much, but they are adequate for the role they play in home theater. If your power is clean the bass response is great and The Matrix thunders home with crystal clarity with the Dolby Digital setup. If you get a great price (less than 400) then these are a welcome addition to any setup. For high end I recommend the Acoustic Research or the Infinity Overture series.

I purchased these speakers a few months ago and have been very impressed. I was looking for some decent dorm room speakers and did extensive research ahead of time. I wanted speakers that could produce a good sound stage with clear highs and soild bass even in the worst enviorment, and I was not willing to pay more than 500 dollars. A friend of mine who runs the school's theater, and is also affiliated with some local movie theaters recommend I look into JBL. My physics professor also recommend JBL. So I went down to a local audio store and compared the HLS 820 to a pair of Polk that were twice as expensive. I was very impressed and order them immeditaly from a mail order catalogue for 199 dollars each. I now feel shamed to call these sound beauties dorm spearkers. When I go home put the 820s in place of my Infinity Kappa 5.1. The best speaker I have heard for under 600 dollars a pair.

Strength:

good presence, attractive looking, deep bass, wonderful highs

Weakness:

lack of definition in midrange, muddled low tones

These were certainly a bargain at ubid for $89 ech. Great bass for my small living area. I'll probably need a SUB for my next house. The directivity horn is fabulous. JBL makes a great product, and in this case very affordable. Even my wife liked the way they looked as their sound. Granted they are not true Hi-Fi but sure are a great step-up for the sub $500 variety speakers. I'll probably make them the surround or side channels for future THX use (I hope!). Excellent for Home Theater or music....
