Strength:

I was looking for a new amp to inject a bit of life into my system as my previous amp, a Musical Fidelity E10 was a bit lacking in dynamics for some of my heavier CD's. So after trawling the local dealers I spotted the Exposure going VERY cheaply in Sevenoaks HiFi. Malden Towing Company

Weakness:

None . .

I have tried that speakers on harman kardon hk970 stereo amp. The result was teribble.
After that Pioneer LX-81. It was better but still no tidy bass, HF very annoing. BI-amping little better but stil annoing. OK i will replace the wires inside. Anybody? Other suggestions for DYI stuff (resistors, capacitators, new crossovers. SOMETHING :)) on these awfull noise making mashines. How to drive them for better sound?
Full range, low cut ot 50,80,100,200Hz ?

Strength:

Very clear mid/high with excellent imaging. Low end is much better than one would expect from the published specs. Don't let that put you off. I have a pair of DefTec BP2004TL that has a low end around 16hz. I like the low end on the JBL more with music that the BPs. How they would handle depth charge scenes from U571, I will never know. The BP2004TL will clear your sinus cavities.

The cabinets are rock solid. Peeking at the rear structure through the port, one can see a very large magnet structure on the 8" woofer. This is usually a good indicator that money has been invested on a good driver.

WIth a rear facing port, base can become large in a hurry if you stick them in a corner. I moved them around a bit to get the base working like it should.

Weakness:

Big, and heavy and made in China. If you had surgery on your L4 in the last few months, have a kid move them. They UPS driver was not happy.

I have heard terms on "Harsh" used to describe them. My equipment must be on the mellow side. They have been very smooth in my listening thus far.

I finally replaced a very old pair of 4311B that I have had for 20 years. I bought sight unseen. I have them running off an old Halfer XL-280 amp with Adcom pre-amp, all cable is Kimber (PBJ and 4TC). They really sound pleasant. I don't think they have harsh highs nor do the woofers get spastic. The Hafler is noted for high dampening so it may keep the low end in control more than some amps. Like all older JBLs, they can really play at high levels. I have spent most of my time listening to jazz and classical at low levels. These are a steal at the price. I did find a link for 199.00. JR music matched at their cost from JBL of $215.00.

I like the sound of these as well as any speaker that I have owned. Mind you, II never get silly on any audio item. If it costs as much as a kidney transplant, you need to get a new hobby.

I bridged two Haflers at 400 watts per, and put on some good ol pipe organ. Hot Damn can they sound accurate at high levels. And that is in a poorly configured room.

Strength:

Solid construction, realistic and almost natural sound, deep bass and detailed mid and high frequencies. Good feets, that make the speakers stand solid on the floor. Simple front cover, that does not disturb the sound.

Weakness:

Muddy bass (sometimes) , a little shrilling with female voices and other high voices. Apparently cheap electric parts inside.

I bougth this speaker, because I have read some reviews of the JBL L890 speaker, that was quite positive. The ES90 uses much the same parts as the L890 speakers, so I thought, they would sound much the same, although they are a little cheaper. I have had some Kappa 90 speakers in the past, that I was very fund of, so I thought, that the ES90 speakers would resemble them a bit.

When I tried the speakers for the first time, the high frequencies was very detailed and was quite bright. The bass was muddy and rather unclear. That improved in time, but never became perfect. There is tight bass as long as there is no exaggerated bass. Bass drums can sound a bit slow and undetailed. Maybe some of the problems with the bass sound lies in my amplifier and my listening room, that is not so big.

The inside of the speaker is a large room filled with a wool like material from top to bottom to prevent ringing sounds. The print board to split the sound between the speakers is quite small, and the high frequency speaker is small compared to, what I have seen in other speakers. The cable wire, that connect the speaker terminals with the speakers, is thinner than in the Kappa series, and might cause the speakers to sound worse than with quality cobber wires. There are wood frames inside the speakers to accomplish some bracing of the speakers, and all in all the speaker construction seems strong and is made in strong wood materials.

At present I think, I should have bougth the L890 speaker instead, because I want perfect sound and the ES90 does not quite deliver that. The bass is too muddy and the treble too bright and a litte shrilling.
