These are the best speakers I have ever heard. Period. They have the most detailed and musical trebble I have ever heard in my life. Not to mention their smooth midrange and deep, rich and fast bass. Their imaging and soundstage are impresive also. These speakers have a very wide dispersion, they would probably work very well for HT. Returning to music though, these speakers just plain rock. I have yet to listen to classical for a sufficient time on them to formulate an opinion about their performance in that department, but for more modern tastes like Eric Clapton, Lenny Kravitz, and the like, I have never heard anything better.

These speakers do everything right.(did I say that?) It is so rare for me to sit down and not pick up obvious faults with speakers. Imaging, soundstaging, accurate instrument placement, and a full neutral sound are simply produced by these beautiful speakers. Seem to pair well with YBA electronics. These speakers are placement critical though. Yes these speakers are expensive but I even found myself justifying the price tag. After all, it's only paper. I have one simple word for these speakers. MUSICAL.

Strength:

Coherence, transparency, vocal quality, powerful bass, dynamics

Weakness:

Highly revealing of source components and media

This is a follow-up review after using my speakers for a year. As time has passed (and a few system upgrades have improved overall performance), my respect for these speakers grows ever stronger. They are like a window, just revealing the music within with clarity and neutrality. They image well with good stage width and excellent depth, they are essentially neutral with perhaps just a touch of brightness (but so clean that this is not a disadvantage), they go very loud on peaks while holding the music together and they reveal detail I've never heard on other systems. They keep responding to system improvements and they need a big clean amp to drive their 4 Ohm load (I use a Chord SPM-1200C).
Indeed, the reviewer below must have been either listening to poorly made clones or heard the Mezzos in a badly matching room with very poor partnering equipment. There is no way that I can equate his comments with the speakers I listen to every day - I have bought so much music this year, a testimony to how much I am enjoying my system. A home demo is a must.

Astonishing, unbelievable, a must hear, even if not shopping for speakers in this price range. I have never heard anything quite like them. But hey, for $13k, what do you expect? Paired with high-end YBA electronics and Cambridge CD player, it was a true music-lover's heaven! Auditioned Beethoven, Miles Davis, others. I could not believe the life-like presentation I was experiencing. Sell your car/boat/the farm, if you can...
5 x 5 for these babies.

A brief add-on to my below review: i've now lived with these speakers for just over 3 months. this is going to sound a bit corny, but...i came home a few nights ago and turned everything on and began playing the same disk i was playing two nights earlier. the sound was different, better--the soundstage had lifted itself up approximately 3 feet, focus was a bit tighter (and, consequetnly, imaging a bit sharper) and the already sweet mids seemed even sweeter. it was as if, all of the sudden, the speakers decided that they were "broken in." the sonic difference after 300+ hours is not subtle. it was well worth the wait.

Strength:

high-mid

Weakness:

there are still 2 more higher level in the same utopia line to go

I had a cobalt 820 1 month back. It was a trash. I did all the things to let it sound good. Even wait until it ran in. It still sound like a junk.

Finnaly I give up the 820 and trade in for this lovely baby. No need to run-in, no need to put it in good position, no need to give it a good wire, Even no need to have a good amp and/or cd player ---- It sounds absolutely killing me, rubbing me and even kissing my soul.

Tell you guys what my simple system is:
1. cheap Denon cd player
2. Onkyo power amp
3. Kimber Kable (KCAG)
4. 1$/meter speaker cable
That's all. Yes, no pre amp, less distortion to the natural acoutic sound.

If you are buying a speaker and you think it will sound good after it ran-in? Yes but only by 1-10%. Trust me buy something you like even before it ran-in.

If I have a big house and money, I will definitly go for the Grand Utopia.

I am a very picky guy and had listened to a lot of speakers and even made my own sometimes. This speaker is great, only the look is already worth the money. After you listen to it , you must love it. I will not analyze it (highs mids .....blah blah blah what waht waht) as other speakers, with $13000 you will hear the money is comming out of the balck porsch finish.

I think I talked too much, I hope you guys will get to listen to one in your life, it is everything.
