Strength:

Smooth sound, no coloration apparent.

Weakness:

None aparent, especially for size, and certainly for price. Wish i could buy the brand today.

Picked up 2 of Epicure M100 for $20 with a bunch of other good old stuff after Christmas. Inverted dome 1" tweeters. 8" woofer with rubber surrounds, paper cones. Acoustic suspension design. Did not try them right away because I had bought a bunch of such stuff that weekend. Tried them a couple of months ago with my best system and they sound great. Seem uncolored and smooth. (Compared to Bozak, Infinity, Yamaha, Electrovoice, University, and others.)

Strength:

Great Sound, Amplifier friendly, Nice tight Bass, Pleasant to look at (with the speaker covers off), Value per $$

Weakness:

None really

These speakers are at least 10 years old. I put 1995 because that was the oldest choice they gave me on a pull-down menu. I purchased these sight unseen from reading about them on an online auction. The gentleman who sold them to me said that he replaced them with Magneplanars and that they were as open, as far as soundstage as the Maggies. Sadly, I can only pass that information on - never having owned Maggies.
However, I have had several pairs of speakers. Boston HDR 8's: The Epicure 4's win this comparison with flying colors. More rich tones, fuller sound, not strained at all when I put the power to them and a great soundstage, as I mentioned above. I also used to own some Polk 10 b's from the late 1970's. Here is a little closer match. But I still like the warmth of the Epicures. The Polks may have imaged about the same, but no better. Power handling of the two pairs sound like about the same. When I had the polks I had different electronics.
Equipment I am using:
Luxman CX-100 (pre-amp)
Luxman MX-100 (power amp)
Luxman T-240 (tuner)
Denon DCD-810 (CD player)
Nakamichi 600 II (casette deck)
Older Kimber Cable
Gold end interconnects
Kenwood KP-5022 F (turntable)

Strength:

Large Imaging, Beautiful Cabinet, Lovingly Created

Weakness:

Dry Rot in Woofer Surrounds and Leaking Ferro Fluid Tweeters

Epicure 11

Purchased in May 1979
High School Graduation Present
Cost…about $300 for the pair
Sound Studio, Dover, DE
Ear Candy for demo:
Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon
Bruce Springsteen, Wild Innocent and E Street Shuffle
Ramones: Rocket to Russia
Talking Heads

Ok…this sounds like a trip down memory lane. It's not. These speakers have been used almost every day for 22 years. They sound as wonderful today as they did when they were pulled from the box. Placed next to my Polk RT800's. and you will think I was kidding. The Epicure's have better presence and sound field imaging than the high tech Polk Baltimore boxes. Even after 20 years. Epicure was an inovator that
have truly met the test of time.

Bright and lively highs, present midrange and competent bass. Not bad for a 6" woofer and "air spring" tweeter. These speakers sounded great when played loud and even better when played at normal background levels. They are efficient in power consumption and sounded great on
a Dynaco 40 watt amp, Kenwood 60 watt upgrade amp and with the current Sony ES 100 watt x 5 channel home theater receiver.

There are some scars….the scratches from a stoned roommate placing them in a dorm window. I am about to enter into my third driver replacement or restoration (woofer surrounds are currently dust in the grill and the tweeters are oozing that ferro fluid stuff). The first two driver changes were on Epicure's 10 year warranty. The last change was through a salvaged pair found at a swap meet.

The latest speaker renovation will be from Human speakers. This cat was an original Epicure employee. He is a bit of a recluse and keeps weird hours….but be persistent….he'll eventually get back to you. He seems to be the last keeper of the Epicure torch. You can get info on HUMAN from www.humanspeakers.com. None of the contact links work…sort of funny if you can just chill out and forget any notion that rejuvenating 20+ year old speakers will happen at internet speed.

Also….a quick fix for trashed surrounds is available from www.partsexpress.com. They have a suspension repair kit for $20 that will save you $100 in replacement driver costs. Follow the directions…and don't rush! The result will astound you and possibly encourage you to go into the restoration business yourself.

Last shot….anyone with a line on a pair of Epicure 20's, please drop me a note.

I've owned a pair of EPI speakers since 1984 and they are the best speakers i've owned. They are now 16 years old and I need replacement parts. I have had a hard time locating them locally but have been successful locating them in California. I don't have the companies name however the phone # is 310-517-8300. I wish I knew who is manufacturing parts for them. If anyone has info, please e-mail me

Weakness:

they were'nt very cheep they were around 1,500 back in the 80's

i have a pair of the epicure 3.0's they have a 10" woofer a 6" midrange and a 1" air spring tweeter they are a pyramid shaped box and have rounded corners they are a very good looking speaker they have walnut planks over the partical board so they are kind of heavy but they are the best speaker i have ever owned and i think that will ever be made it was epicures finest model the 20+ were pretty good to i upgraded from the 20+ to the 3.0 and there was a big diffrence if anybody has the 3.0 i would like to keep in touch i think it is cool seeing these reviews and know that there are other people who appreciate well made speakers unlike most of the newer crap like bose

if anybody has a single or a pair of woofers and midranges for them that are damaged and are just going to through them out send me an email i will even pay a little for them

thanks

Couldn't agree more than the other review here. Rock bottom prices (250 for the pair @ going out of business sale) and the better sounding than most speakers I have heard. You find them, you buy them.

I've owned a number of EPI/Epicure products. I still own a pair or EPE T/E 70s and sold a friend a pair of Epicure 20+ floorstandings.

Strength:

Wonderful mids and highs. Exceptionally clear and powerful for such a small speaker. Marvelous soundstage.

Weakness:

Power hungry, little or no bass.

Amazing speaker for their age and size. Marvelous mids and highs for a 6-inch main with a 1-inch tweeter. Passive radiator does produce some lows but insufficient for todays music. When combined with a good small sub-woofer these speakers are tailor made for music. Excellent for Jazz and classical and can be had for a song used on ebay. Excellent walnut veneer and craftsmanship. EPI's are good speakers but the Epicures are even more amazing with top of the line fit and finish and no vinyl. Get these speakers if and when you can.

Strength:

These speakers are an exceptionally Perfect

Weakness:

I live in a dry climate and it seems that just reasently the foam lining around my 8 in. woofers is cracking. but they're over 11 years old and that is a pretty good life span for any speaker in this climate.

I have owned the model 4s for quite some time now and must say that when I bought them I never thought that they would be this good. I bought them from a old couple who were having a garage sale and they said that they rarely ever even used them so they were getting rid of them. I asked how much and the lady said that I could have them for 20 dollars a peace and I thought well I could always use another pair of speakers. I never thought that they would become my favorite speakers. I have priced every thing from B and W, NHT, Boston Acustic, Diffinitive, and infinity since my woofers started to deteriorate but none can produce the quality that my Epicures do. I just recently ordered new woofers and can't wait till they get here! Knowing what I know now I wouldn't hesitat spending over 300 dollars on a pair of used ones in good condition. Even just to have a second pair. I love these speakers. Model 4s are sweet speakers!!!!
