Strength:

Build quality and high frequency response

Weakness:

Harsh at upper frequencies and limited bass.

Very crisp sound, however when I turn up the volume there is some harshness. The quality of the sound is not as smooth other speakers out there. Still the build quality is very good and I like the aluminum Tweeter, it does well with violins and brass.

Strength:

Nice Highs, price, warm mid range.

Weakness:

Noce at this price.

I bought these speakers for a smaller second home theater. I have to say they sound wonderful! The mids sound very smooth yet powerful. The highs are very smooth and detailed. Mid bass is punchy and quick. I am using the exl-15s for front and rear speakers. They match well with the exl-c center speaker. They play pleny loud for small to mid size rooms. They image as good as my Definitive Technology BP2002TLs. For the price this is a wonderfull speaker! They sound best when placed away from the walls and about fve feet apart, toed in at the listening position. My Smaller system: Tosiba 36" (TV) Denon AVR-1803 (receiver) Energy exl-15 (front & Rear) Energy exl-c (Center) Definitive Technology Pro Sub 100TL (sub) Playstation 2 (dvd) Comcast Digital (Cable) Gary Bitters

Strength:

Good clean and clear highs Affordable Good reviews Great quality for price Binding posts 125 watts power handling Removable grill

Weakness:

Weak bass The tweater is not covered and sooner or later dust starts collecting and i am not looking forward to cleaning and touching the tweater.

I have purchased the Energy Encore centre channel and a pair of Energy exl15's to use for front. I chose the exl15's because i have made up my mind to buy the centre channel already and i thought the exl15's would be a better match (over the bigger exl16's) because of the woffer size. I wanted the speakers to have about the same bass output as the centre channel. the bass from the exl15's i already knew from the store that it woudn't be great but it didn't bother me because i have a sub and i would redirect all the bass to the sub. I bought the mains and the centre speakers strictly because of the clarity, mid range and sensitivity. I did not care about the bass output at all. I could have bought the Energy Encore set (which then would match the look of my centre channel) but the exl15's are way better for music. I am using them with a Yamaha 630 receiver which is 75x6 /ch. When i first tested them at home...i was totally happy. the centre channel was very clear and the exl15's matched pretty good. With music the main are clear and good treble response though i do warn you to use a sub because you will not be impressed...they truly lack bass. They are small speakers good for apartments and not recommended for those who are looking for power instead of quality and clarity. I also recommend installing them with brackets on the wall to have more of a spacesiousness and better image. In wall units they sound a little muggy. The bottom line is....I am gonna enjoy every DVD movie i watch.

Strength:

Crisp & clear sound

Weakness:

Bass handling limitations at high volumes

I bought four XL-15s (2 front, 2 rear)in September of 98 along with the XL-C speaker for the front. The sound quality for home theatre is amazing and from what I've seen in the showrooms, can only be matched by large speaker systems. For the price, these speakers are a steal and perform better than speakers three times their price. I was absolutely amazed when I first heard music being played on them: I could hear things that I have never been able to hear on other speakers (including older Energy towers).

The only limitation that I have found with these speakers is that although they can handle bass pretty good, there is a limitation as to the volume of bass that they can reproduce. If you aren't running most of your bass to a subwoofer they tend to distort at very high volumes and they sound as if they bottom out a bit.

These speakers are perfect for people who love realistic sound quality in both home theater and music reproduction.

Strength:

Size, high frequency response

Weakness:

Mid-range accuracy

I purchased the eXL:15s as main front speakers as part of a home theater system that included the Energy Take 5s for the rear speakers and the eXL:s8 sub woofer driven by a Denon 2801 AV receiver. When auditioning them, I found that I liked the accuracy of the eXL:16s better, but decided to go with the eXL:15s to save a little money, on the theory that when I didn't have anything to compare them to, I wouldn't really notice the difference. I was wrong.

Particularly with vocals and acoustic guitar music, there is a definite flatness (not freq response) or dullness to their sound. It seems to be a characteristic of the midrange. It is difficult to describe, but it was noticeable even during casual listening and occasionally when playing movies. It bothered me enough to replace them with eXL:16s.

There is a significant difference between the two models. I know HT systems "shouldn't" be used for music, but sometimes we do. I strongly recommend springing for the eXL:16s. They are some of the best sounding speakers I have encountered (if supplemented with a subwoofer). They seem to color the sound very little. As an aside, I also upgraded the sub to an eXL:S10. To summarize, they're not bad for the money, but there is noticeable aural coloration of music and voices.

Strength:

Great Sound from a relatively small speaker

Weakness:

None so far

After doing quite a bit of research I went to listen to the Energy Take 5 system. I was very impressed and was basically ready to buy until the salesman switched the eXL15s on. WOW! what a difference. I was very impressed at the clarity and increased bass compared to the Take 5s. After hearing the difference between the Take 5s and eXL15s, I also listened to the eXL16s. After switching back and forth between the 15s and 16s for about an hour at the store, both my girlfriend and I thought the 15s had a clearer more balanced sound, and matched better with the eXL-C center channel. Plus, the room for my home theater is fairly small, so I felt the 15s would be more than enough sound. Went ahead and bought 4 eXL15s, an eXLC center and eXLS8 sub, and a Denon AVR1800 to power them. Overall for the price, I couldn't be happier. The sound they put out continues to amaze me.

I stumbled on these while shopping with a Friend (who ended up picking up a pair of eXL-26s). I was looking for some speakers myself for my Onkyo 905TX Stereo for my apartment. I have limited room, I was floored my how good the eXL-15 sounded (okay, they're no 26, but they're 70% less in price =-) Really amazing Bass from such a small speaker, I'm able to run them "flat" on my Stereo and be amazed by the clear sound. One warning, Energy tweets need a break-in period of a few days, after about 2-3 days they sound better. I'm able to watch movies at low volume, and make out every word, something few speakers seem to be able to do (lets face it, we've all done the volume shuffle between action scenes and "quiet" scenes, well you don't have to with the energys, they pick up the smallest sound and reproduce it so clearly that there is no need to crank up the volume. I picked up a pair for $169 at The Good Guys (I talked them down from $199). They sounded better than some of the "full sized" $400-500 speakers in the same sound room there, from some of the best names in speakers, hell they blew the Boston's away, and Boston has been a favorite of mine for years (my Car is all Boston).
