Strength:

Perfect for home theaters and great for music lovers...Especially live recordings.

Weakness:

As some has unknowningly stated before, can sound muddy when linked with a low quality reciever or interconnects. Not the speakers fault however.

I also am suprised to see the low overall review of this speaker. At least a 4.75 or 5.0 speaker. There are other wonderful speakers out there in this price range and the 26''s can hang with the best of them.

Wonderful Speaker! I also am suprised to see the low overall review of the EXL26. This is at least a 4.75 speaker if not a 5.0. There are other outstanding speakers in this price range as well, and matched with the right equipment, the 26''s can hang with the best of them.

Strength:

sound quality: clarity, good high, mid, and bass, acuurate point in deep and wide soundstage

Weakness:

need high end receiver and good quality CD

I don't know why this superb speakers got such low overall rating. To get the superb sound from this speaker, you need high end receiver, good quality CD, and need some time to break in. I try a couple of CDs from light music to classic to rock. I found that the quality of CD matters. When the CD is low quality, the sound get harsh and bright. So that is not the fault of the speakers. I guess that is why some people low rate this speakers. In addition, the receiver does matter. If you use high end such as Denon, Onkyo, the quality of the sound get fully expressed. The sound stage is accurate and deep, and the high and mid and bass is extremely clean and warm. That is probally the best sound in this price range. However, when I use the sony receiver, the sound is still good but get some muffled vocal and fatigue when litsen a little long time. For this price, I would rate this speaker 5 star.

These review here are the most confusing I have seen so far. The rating here is from 0 star to 5 stars ! How could it be ? I went to some audio stores to test speakers (my hobbies) and even the same speakers sound different in different stores !! The same speakers could be very good in one store but very bad in another store. To be fair, one must take the speakers home or try to listen the same speaker at different stores before puting your review here. Just my 2cents.

After reading these review here, I must go out to try it myself !! Just ignore my rating....

Strength:

Detail, clarity, openness, soundstage, beautiful high end and good bass.

Weakness:

Vocals are sometimes recessed.

Beautiful speakers and the best I heard in their price range. Ditto to what others have said about detail, soundstage, crispness, etc. Get them or at least listen to them.

I first got the Boston Acoustics VR950, but brought them back because they sounded good, but unexciting. I wanted more for the money. Klipsch RF3B speakers were OK, with good soundstage, but a little “horney” (because of the nature of their construction). The Mirage OM10s sounded very distant, like they were in another room -- just awful. Also listened to the Paradigm Monitor 7. Most importantly, none of these speakers could match the Energy speakers for detail, crispness, openness, and a beautiful high end. It also sounds better than the Boston Acoustics on TV & video.

Bass is well-defined and strong. Unfortunately, I have a small living room (11’x15’), and I almost returned the speakers because the bass sounded too boomy. The room was overcrowded with furniture, so I moved a love seat to another room and spread out the speakers. No more bass problems and the soundstage is great.

My only criticism is that vocals sound too recessed sometimes.

See the Sept 98 Home Theater Mag for a positive review of the Energy XL system. Reviews of the rear and center speaker components of the system can be found in the Oct 98 Video Magazine and Sept 98 Stereo Review. Other possible alternatives that I did NOT compare them to include the NHT Supertwos and the Paradigm Monitor 9. I use an Onkyo TX-DS575 receiver.

I apologize for posting a question here, but I have searched for the answer to no avail. I recently listened to the energy exl 26's and thought they were great!!! I plan on picking up the es12xl sub also. My question is if the 26s are worth the xtra money over the 25s--assuming they will be matched with a sub??? Any responses to rwalsh@umich.edu would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks

I was shopping around for new speakers about 8 months ago. I went to every electronics store I could find and listed to all kinds of speakers. I was looking to spend about $500CDN. When I first heard the Exl 25's I was very impressed. The highs were sharp and the Base was snappy. The sound just seemed to fill the room like no other speaker that I listed to. I was just about to buy them and I saw the Exl 26's. I listed to them and they had the same great sound with extra base. I purchased the 26's and I am very happy with them. I have them connected to an Onkyo TX-SV646 receiver. My system realy Kicks ass. It sounds awesome at high and low volume. Exl 26 speakers rock!!!

Strength:

sounds great, awsome highs

Weakness:

bass too boomy

these speakers sound great, but i am starting to get a little dismayed. i run a denon avr-1800 receiver, a quality receiver with way lower wattage per channel than these speakers can handle and this is the second time i have blown the tweeters. i know about the distortion factor in a lower wattage receiver and i also know when i am pushing the speakers but both times they blew i didn't expect it at all, i thought i could get much more out of them especially the second time. I wanna love these speakers but its kinda hard when i constantly have to worry about blowing out the tweeters in a high volume jam session.

Overall just a good sounding speaker. Construction is very good . I highly recommend this speaker for the price,
You can count on a long break-in period 200 plus hours or more.
Hint: Bi wire and use avery good quality wire!
Also use a high quality receiver, these speaks will sing when driven at high volume,,,I use a denon 4800 receiver (a good combination).
