Energy Speaker Systems 22 Reference Connoisseur Floorstanding Speakers

22 Reference Connoisseur

High end of the 22 series Energy speaker designed in 1982 and lasted several years. This model of the 22RC had a frequency response of 25Hz to 45Khz with a 1 inch tweeter and 7 inch woofer. This speaker broke new ground for design in the early 80s. There is also a 22 Reference and 22 Pro. This one is the high end RC version. It had a built in stand support, while the lower 22 models needed a stand to sit on.

I inherited a set of these speakers - the floor standing models that weigh a ton. Anyway, hooking them to my stereo, I get very little power unless I turn it all the way up. Does anyone know what an appropriate amp power would be for these very high end speakers? Suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Own a mint set 80's reference pair. Drive by B&K monoblocks, Rotel pre-amp and Cambridge Audio cd player. I dare to find anything that compares for what a used set goes for.

I own a pair of these and they live up to their reputation. I have yet to hear a better home speaker! There is a pair on eBay right now going for $3,999US and another repaired pair that didn't meet the lowest reserved bid at $180US. Go figure!
I bought mine in Canada in 1982 and paid $1,200CAN. The hyperdome tweeter is amazing and the relatively small cabinets (mine have a dark walnut veneer) produce a bottom end of 30Hz (which is exactly what the specs claim). No sub woofer required, although I do have a Sunfire (with 2,700 watt built in amp) for the full bottom end. I power the Energy towers with a vintage McIntosh 2100 power amp and the McIntosh C35 pre amp controls all. This system rocks or whispers and these references speakers make it all work.
